Marine engineer Leow Ban Tat wasn’t content to sail into a comfortable retirement. With the right technologies, farming methods and government support, he is living his dream of rearing healthy fish to feed the masses.

This story by CNA Insider is produced in collaboration with the ‪@SGFoodAgency‬ Singapore Food Agency.
For more on how Singapore’s food future is being shaped, visit: www.ourfoodfuture.gov.sg
Eco-Ark is one of the sea-based fish farms contributing to Singapore’s ambitious ’30 by 30' goal.
The country aims to build the agri-food industry’s capability and capacity to produce 30 per cent of its nutritional needs by 2030 - up from less than 10 per cent today - by ramping up its productivity in ways that are resource-optimal, climate-resilient, and sustainable both environmentally and commercially.
The government believes fish is a nutritious source of protein that the country can produce sustainably, and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) aims to give the aquaculture industry a leg-up through various measures.
These include the launch of new sea space tenders in the southern waters and East Johor Straits from the end of this year, with lease tenures of 20+10 years that provide greater certainty so that farmers can plan and invest for the longer term, the agency said this month.
The SFA is also supporting the transformation of the aquaculture sector into a highly productive, climate-resilient and resource-efficient one that leverages technology and appropriate farm management methods.
Interested farms can tap its S$60-million Agri-Food Cluster Transformation (ACT) Fund launched last year. It replaced the Agriculture Productivity Fund which committed over S$50 million to 132 companies - including Eco-Ark - from 2014 to 2021.
As of Dec 31, 2021, the agency has received 23 applications for ACT funding. Eight have been approved, while the rest are being processed and evaluated, the SFA said.
The efforts are starting to bear fruit. In 2021, Singapore’s fish farms produced 4,200 tonnes of fish, an increase of 33 per cent from a decade ago.

Thank you for all your encouragement and support. It definitely will continue to evolve as we embrace new technologies and new ideas. Currently ACE have commissioned two units of bigger Eco Ark and one unit of Eco Spark as floating hatchery. All of them have been designed with solar roofs to harness whatever energy we can. Though it has been one long and arduous journey, at ACE we strive to do our tiny bit towards our nation’s vision of 30-by-30 and eventually to serve the world, with our vision of ACE Farm Local Feed Global. To the Better Tomorrow. To the Next Generation. Thank you 🙏 ACE Team

@@stephenw2992 as much as a fish can fall ill living in poopertanks, repeating monotonous unnatural movement in an plastical environment. "hence the lean taste" Of course having polluted seas where fish basically breath plastic is also an issue. Never really enjoyed fish, the only "good" fish I've ever eaten was a tuna with a very smooth sauce. The quality of the fish was noticable because you had clear pull apart pieces not these sort of shreddy meat parts that have fish taste. Didn't taste fishy at all. Don't care if it was from the ocean or a hydraulic chamber. That was good fish. Also protein-foods or even worse the abominations based on genetically configured plants that are free to play with in the US create fish I don't even want to come near considering what a clownshow we call scientists nowadays propagating through politicians a "vaccine" to a virus, which is nothing but gene therapy.

Congratulations to you Mr. Ban Tat. The financier were apprehensive of your idea because they are not engineers and do not understand the mechanics of what you have applied. I'm an engineer myself too but in civil engineering. If would would have know of you earlier I would put in this effort together with you too to create the Eco Ark you have today. Eco Ark is an extension of tank fish farming on land but that's freshwater fishes. Yours would be salt water fishes. It will surely work! Keep it up.

Here is a true story of "Dreams do come true in Singapore". Kudos to Mr Leow for his perseverance in pushing for his dreams to come true and his team also for managing the farm. As an avid Kayak Angler, I am always amazed whenever I pass by the EcoArk as it amazes me that threats like Algae Bloom or Oil spills will not affect the quality & health of the fish! Moreover, EcoArk does help us Kayakkers & Boaters navigate or identify where we are especially in rainy or hazy weather & even shields us from the wind on days with extremely strong winds. It is good and exciting to hear that Mr Leow plans to build more EcoArks around Singapore's waters.

I mean that is just completely false it all depends where the fish comes from. If it's cheap salmon farmed in Norway of course it's bad. If you buy expensive salmon from New Zealand and it's health benifits are higher than wild salmon
