Inside Juvenile Prison Unedited: What Our Cameras Saw

In this video we look back at a day our cameras spent inside a maximum-security juvenile prison documenting teens behind bars. Our crew followed correctional officers and teen prisoners working in the prison kitchen and the contraband they found while on the job. We then spent time inside the segregation unit control room, where officers watched tv screens that monitored all the kids in the cells. Our cameras then followed officers and teens as they were shackled and taken outside in a razor wire recreation cage for their 1 hour of rec time before being placed back in their isolation cells.

I know the boy who was over held for 2 years got released eventually because he was aging out of the system but I wonder how long it took to get him out and what happened to him. Just think if a mild mannered kid went in at 12 and only had a 1 month sentence and they just kept him there until he aged out at 18! There’s something wrong with this!

That place looks depressing I was locked up as a teenager and I was sent to a disciplinary boot camp we had funding from our state it got me together i'm 29 years old now doing alright in life just working alot.

And sometimes if an inmate has completed their sentences and it is time for release, if they are of minor class they could find something to keep them in longer such as they have AIDS, or their parents are homeless and are on a long housing waitlist for public housing or a voucher for rent assistance, they could use that situation and trump up another charge that could also include abusing their parents even though it never happene.

Good grief, this boy should have been released TWO YEARS ago!!!! That’s unacceptable! But what is impressive is his calm mature demeanor, compare that to yesterday the boy stealing the broom because his behavior prevented him from getting his level so he threw a fit and has a history of violence BUT in the end that gets him his way because EVERYONE came to help him get out “as quick as possible “, but the calm well mannered boy is just left for 2 YEARS! Moral of the story: good behavior gets you 2 extra years with no promise of ever getting out while fits and violence get you out fast. How sad! The people that are probably the safest in society they keep. The people who are the threat to society they help get out fast. That’s upside down.

Jeez! I don't miss that spaghetti at all lol I worked in the kitchen here at WBVCF too and would get in trouble for putting too much food on the trays, and eventfully got fired lol and went to work at rec

I agree with the boy who said he wished he had a day off . He had been working for a year straight and other boys chimed in about child labor. Now I believe the boys should be taught to work. Just sitting around doing nothing isn’t good for them BUT even adults get days off. The Bible says to work 6 days and have 1 day of rest. It’s not good to have no rest. The boys need one day off a week to let the mind, body and spirit rest.

@@brianclark803 i agree with that but I am a Christian so I also believe the Bible where it says we need a day of rest and that day of rest was extended to everyone including people who don’t believe in God, the animals and criminals. It’s something God set aside as a necessity for all life just like food and water is a necessity. We need rest. As for punishment, they are still being punished while they rest because they can’t run to the park to play. They are locked in a concrete cell and the other 6 days they can work. One day of rest doesn’t mean life will be easy.

Are they allowed books? Writing or educational materials? What was the mental health treatment?

@heidipiette4537 - yes, they are allowed books and they go to school in another unit on the prison grounds during the day. They can put in a request to see their prison counselor and there is a full time medical unit at this particular prison. Thank for you asking, and taking the time to watch.

@@CalamariProductionsthe problem is on one episode the boys said the counselors only showed up for the cameras but when the cameras aren’t around, the counselors aren’t around either. On another episode the boys commented on the officers just playing on their phones ignoring the boys and there’s a lot of bullying and sxual assaults because the staff are too busy on their phones to notice or help. On a couple of episodes the boys have commented how worthless the teachers are in helping them. I know kids can exaggerate especially criminals who are known for lying, but I believe them on these points.

there does need to be a youth jail system. there are rapists and murderers in there. one kid had 24 armed robberies…. plus this facility has a unit that is boot camp, they wear camp and stuff

Juvenile prison looks more like federal prison very scary for kids the all not will come out normal

Is this in Indiana cause that prison system is fucked up and depressing I was locked up as a teenager for a couple years we actually have funding up here for out of home placement I went to a disciplinary boot camp it got me together I'm 29 years old now living a decent life.
