From what I remember, Denzel was offered the part of Dalton the Bank Robber but didn't like the idea of acting underneath a mask. Which is interesting because I think Clive Owen's best acting in the movie is while he's in his bank robber outfit with the scarf or whatever over his mouth and the sunglasses.

It's baffling how little of a cultural imprint this film has had, given it's quality. So few channels have reacted to it, I've been flabbergasted why. So fun! Edit: And the fact that La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) basically stole the concept full cloth for its setup just makes it that much more obvious that this is a formula for success.

Spike Lee...master of the dolly shot. 21:00 - The shot on of Densel on the camera dolly with everyone else in the background was an amazing setup. A perfect way to introduce shock, anger, and being outside oneself. Incredibly under noticed in this movie, and I've never seen anyone else do something similar. Also if you notice at 3:02 Spike Lee also did some very great double dolly shots to get that background fade in.

@@disconnexionsdotcom yeah the floating dolly shots are amazing too. I just especially love that the camera is at a slight down angle and the footage purposely has other action on the background moving around him. The dolly upshot in Malcom X was also very powerful but much more etherical of a composition with the trees. Of course I guess no one else wants to be compared with Spike in these things so they don't try it. Also Harvey Keitel narrating along with the bike in Clockers was so great too.

This movies references two heist movies from the 70s that you should watch: DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) and THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE (1974, NOT the 2009 version). I love the bits where Denzel asks the various interviewees 'so did you rob the place then?', they laugh nervously and then he asks again 'no but did you though?' and they look like they are going to faint from stress. He's so charismatic it's almost irritating. Edit: oh, and Chewitel is great here too, in a relatively early role.

Decades ago in the UK a friend brother built up a considerable collection of signs including street names from various cities and signs from public buildings, brass name plates etc. How he did it was simple. He owned a white van, a set of white overalls, a ladder and some tools and he simply drove up to his target and took it down. If asked he was told it was going for cleaning or replacement. Acting co0mpletely confidently and like it's his job he was never caught.

One of Spike's best (and most mainstream) film that shows the influence of the original Taking of Pelham 123 (the other being Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs). What I loved was you can look at each main character as either protagonist or antagonist. Some other cool stuff: the opening song is from Dil Se, a great and just as weird Bollywood film; the overhead shot of the cops setting up the the perimeter was like watching a spider web being built in time lapse; of course, the inside man is the Jewish diamond dealer. Fun and thoughtful film at the same time.

You should check out comedian Russell Peters' set, Adventures in Saudi Arabia. Great reaction! As usual! A Denzel film I must recommend: *Deja Vu* (2006) OTHER FILMS TO SEE: ● *Spy Game* (2001) with *Brad Pitt* and *Robert Redford.* ● *The Mexican* (2001), starring _Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts_ and _James Gandolfini._ ● *_The Fisher King_* (1991) Dir. by Terry Gilliam, with _Robin Williams_ & _Jeff Bridges._ ● *_Silverado_* (1985). A *fun* western with _Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Kevin Costner, Jeff Goldblum,_ and more. Written and directed by *_Lawrence Kasdan,_* co-writer of the _Star Wars_ films _The Empire Strikes Back_ (1980), _Return of the Jedi_ (1983), and _The Force Awakens_ (2015). He also co-wrote _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ (1981). Be well! 🙋🏼‍♂️

Malcolm X (1992)! It's more Denzel and Spike Lee; Denzel's best performance in Lee's best movie Also, the song that plays over the opening credits is from a Bollywood romantic musical political thriller called Dil Se (1998) which is also a great film

I'm so glad you guys did this movie. This is such a fun watch and Clive Owen and Denzel are fantastic. A similar style movie is Man On A Ledge with Sam Worthington (Avatar) I also have to throw in my usual recommendations of Kelly's Heroes and Sushi Girl I'm not a Patreon (for now) so those won't get put on your lists but maybe some day.

If you're going to follow up a series of heist films with a heist film, you definitely chose the right one, the first watch is special but it stands up to repeated viewings and is great to show people that haven't seen it. Please do Training Day next time, so many great Denzel movies to go but I want that the most. 😸

I like this movie a lot, it's a fun ride. But I'm a little sad because I feel like so many more people will see this movie than will see other Spike Lee films that have so much more to say. Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, Summer of Sam, 25th Hour, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods all deserve at least as much attention as this movie, but It's this movie that gets replayed on cable TV the most often. I hope that you will explore Spike Lee's filmography more, especially "Do the Right Thing" and "BlacKkKlansman" which are his very best films. As for Denzel, this guy has an overwhelming number of great performances. Could he possibly be the best actor alive? If you've seen "Training Day" you know the answer is HELL YEAH! Check him out in "American Gangster", "Flight", and as Tom Hanks' lawyer in "Philadelphia". And don't forget "Fences" which he directed as well as starred in. Of course, you can't let "Malcom X" get by you either. Glad you enjoyed this movie!

Denzel has a whole lot of good movies to watch. Don't know which ones you already did, but more recent and typical ones for reacting are "The Equalizer", "Safe House", "American Gangster", "Man on Fire", or "Training Day". The ones I prefer are less known and mainly from the 90s, except for "Man on Fire", and are "The Bone Collector" (1999, thriller with Angelina Jolie), "Out of Time" (2003, thriller with Eva Mendes), "Fallen" (1998, great movie, thriller with John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini and Elias Koteas), "The Siege" (1998, interesting drama-thriller-action movie pre-9/11, with Bruce Willis and Annette Bening), or "Virtuosity" (1995, underrated sci-fi with a younger Russell Crowe). There are still quite a few interesting ones, aside from these listed. I agree "Children of Men" is one of the best movies ever. For Clive Owen, fantastic actor, I'd suggest, if you haven't seen them, "The International" (2009, action-thriller with Naomi Watts), "Sin City" of course (2005, with great cast, too long to list), or "Anon" (2018, a sci-fi thriller with Amanda Seyfried).
