Spike gets a great performance out of everyone in the cast, top to bottom. The little characters in the mix, like the Sikh teller, the kid, and the Albanian wife, really liven up the drama and intrigue.

Wish we got more movies like this again. Not some "artiste" film that tries to change the genre, not some blockbuster that's made to crush the international box office, it's just a quaint little gem with enough style to set it apart from the crowd. Also I still think of that "EAT THIS EAT THAT EAT THIS" moment to this day.

I love this film and I have a crazy story about it. Spike Lee was in London doing promo for Blackkklansman and Clive Owen was in the audience to support him as a friend and any question that came up regarding acting in Spike Lee movies, Spike would jump to his feet and point and Clive going "THIS GUY KNOWS" it was very sweet

This was a REALLY well done movie - for so MANY different reasons - including a BIG thing that you missed. Too many movies now & in the last few decades have become very simplistic - very basic comedy, some action (not well done) & BASIC story. THIS movie however had a great story, a great way of breaking the timeline up, fantastic acting even by minor characters, the camera angles as you mention were great, the mix of cultures & ages, the great way it brought out the actual NATURE & impetus of each of the bigger characters (both the good ones & bad), the type of internal politics behind the scenes in various facets of New York. As you said it was great the way it didn't spoon feed you the story from the start through to the end but kept you THINKING & trying to put the story together. (This also helps get the movie more views as people in a lot of cases will want to see it again in order to catch if there were clues all along that they missed & what they were. This makes even 2nd & 3rd viewings of the movie enjoyable even when you know the outcome already. This doesn't hurt the financial situation for the filmmaker by doing so either.) There were 2 things that you didn't seem to notice (& as a filmmaker you should). The first thing was how well the scenery was done for the various scenes of the movie ie. outside area of the bank in New York city (where it was located & what was around it - & how that would work with a hostage situation), as well as how the bank owners office was - expensive, OLD-World ornate - from a wealthy WW2 home-style, very big/long [& empty of anyone, except the owner] - which showcases what the ROOTS of the bank are & how very alone the owner is within it (even psychologically), as well as so many of the other scenes (incl. the bridge at the beginning) & the various settings for Jodie Foster confidential talks etc. The 2nd thing you missed (which is also important for a filmmaker) is the great use of LIGHTING within the movie. Lighting CAN play such a great ROLE in a film when considered & used properly - adding to the atmosphere/mood, timeline, believability etc. There are times during this movie when the shading & shadows added so much to the suspense as when Denzel Washington was walked through the bank to see the hostages etc. I AM glad that you did catch so much with this film - as a well put together film DESERVES notice for its different elements - even if you have to go back to get the FULL appreciation in 2nd or 3rd watches of the film. (A movie like this one needs the 2nd watch to catch the story hints & details missed while a 3rd watch could probably allow you to focus more on the great film MAKING aspects used in more detail - even though some of those details ARE sinking in as you watch even the 1st time without a person realizing it.) I am glad that you just enjoyed the film, period. Have a great day.
