Hey guys, I want to apologize for the haircut bit which a few of you pointed out as being untrue. In retrospect a country mandating 28 haircuts is a pretty ridiculous claim and it's on me for not being more skeptical. I'm sorry I had a lapse in critical thinking, I will be more discerning in the future. -Nolan

Regarding the Volvo situation; the Swedish government actually still sends invoices to the DPRK every 6 months, so because of accumulating interest the bill is now over 3,6 billion SEK (roughly 360 million USD). In a similar manner Kim Il Sung ordered industrial, mining and shipyard equipment, specialty tools and even saunas (and many other things). Representatives from Swedish industry held a technical exhibition in Pyongyang in 1975, and the north koreans were, allegedly, very interested in the construction and materials of all the equipment displayed, but not so much about the price. From one day to another, the swedes found that they had been victims of industrial espionage on a massive scale because overnight, everything had been disassembled and then reassembled again, but poorly.

The Ssangyong Chairman is actually based on the W210 e-class and uses the m102/m104 engine. Believe it or not, a lot of german/japanese car manufacturers used to give technical support/ joint ventures with several korean manufacturers (mainly because they didn’t have the necessary knowledge and technology). If you look at korean-made cars around 1970s to early 2000s, especially in the luxury segment, a lot were either built with a lot of german help (e.g., design, engines) or simply rebadged opels/mitsubishis/nissans. Additional Info: Ssangyong collaborated (basically badge engineered) with Daimler Benz for total of 3 models: Chairman, Musso and Istana. A lot of their other models also used mercedes transmission and chassis.

@@phrodendekia same here in Indonesia; they even sell these on Mercedez-Benz authorized dealers! Some buyers were reportedly offered to replace the Ssangyong badge for a Mercedes badge if they wanted to. Sadly these Ssangyong's barely seen anymore. It’s not a copy cat car, it’s absolutely legal production. bad information as always when it comes to NK. BS and propaganda! A South Korean guy have manufacturing rights to Fiats world car and he set up shop in a free trade zone to produce the car. Straight forward capitalism, nothing strange! When I was asked what industry I wanted to see in NK I proposed that factory in 2007 but I think the factory wasn’t very active at the time. About the advertisements, yes the only two billboards I found was advertising that Fiat car, one model on each. That was actually double the number of anti USA posters I found walking all over Pyongyang. Yes I walked both with my guide and alone. I had no restrictions of taking photographs and took a lot! I believe some of my Volvo car pictures will be published in a book later this year. Bye the way there is no Volvo taxis from that original batch in Pyongyang anymore, they have been sent of to other places. An acquaintance from Sweden was there studying at the Pyongyang University a few years ago, I talked to him on FaceTime while there. At the time of my 12 days in the country VW Passat was very common as car for officials, most likely made in China. NK have rare earth metals in abundance, the chances you carry a bit NK in your pocket is huge! They export everything they can produce to China for their mobile phone production. Money is coming in and they have renovated Pyongyang and build lots of new buildings the last few years. All info about NK comes from their two enemies SK and USA so you need to understand that we are talking a lot of propaganda here. If you care to know more you can always go there, not very difficult, but it has been closed during Covid.

A few years ago, a Romanian site wrote about Romanian made Dacia 1310's still being used in DPRK. There are actual photos of them being used as either private cars or as taxis. The reason for our cars being used there is that Romania had really good relationships with the DPRK before 1989 and we sold them there as well. We still had ok relationships with them after 1989 as Romania had the last EU ambasy in DPRK that was closed in 2021 due to very strict anti-covid restrictions that did not allow the changes of some diplomats. Anyway, back to the vehicles, some say there are other Romanian vehicles there as well. Who knows. It might be true.

The Sangyong Chairman was not a poor copy of a Mercedes, it was fully authorised and used a stretched w124 platform with Mercedes engine, transmission, etc. it was a luxury vehicle that attempted to provide S class luxury with E class mechanicals. It had softer suspension than the Mercedes and the comfort was biased towards rear seat passenger rather than driver. How do I know this.. because I owned one. A good, reliable and extremely comfortable car that was only let down by some poor quality plastics and switches.

I've heard claims that the elusive North Korean Mercedes clone is actually just a regular Merc, modified for propaganda purposes. There's an orange one, a blue one and a red one, but they might just be the same car with a new paint job. The alleged build quality issues might be just funny internet rumors, or possibly they slapped the car together out of spare parts, but lacked window motors, a heater core, door seals and such.

yes that right. Rev Moon has been trying to get the two Korean govts to be in speaking terms and cooperate for decades. Rev. Moon's anti-communist stance made him a high profile target for American leftist, Kim Il Sung himself, Japanese communusts and the Soviets. After much preparatiin, he finally was able to meet with both Gorbachev and Kim Il Sung and thaw tensions. Ending Communism was one of his life time goals. The Korean issue was of particular interest because it was the last bastion of Cold War unresolved and involved te major powers. And his Little Angels dance troup set the way for the wave of global k-pop. The group acted like cultural ambassadors for Korea, very much like the Kiev Orchestra Symphony right now, making their case about being a nation apart. Rev Moons "power" is simply trust he built when dealing with people who wanted him dead

100% would watch this. Highlights include the Pars which looks like a Peugeot 406 but is actually a Peugeot 405, and the RD which looks like a Peugeot 405 but is actually a Hillman Hunter, and the Paykan which looks like a Hillman Hunter which has broken down, which it often is/has.

@@mig25foxbat iranian car companies were never any good with car design. The RD is a 405 with a Paykan underneath, the Dena is a brand new car which is a Samand underneath, and anything made by Saipa is basically a face-lifted Kia Pride

As a Korean, hell, you didnt butcher it at all. I'm more surprised that you managed to say most of the word correctly. Those north Korean car names are somewhat a subject of amusement for rest of the Koreans as well. Far too old fashioned for us, hard AF for foreigners to pronounce. Also, that unification church? They're Moonies. That whole sunshine thingy not only proved that it didn't work, but was criticized for the involvement of Moonies for some deeply shady deals. Crazy.

This is fascinating and all but learning about the DPRK just tends to make me sad... So many people living in such an awful place under such an awful regime. I know this is reality across the world (increasingly so these days, some would argue), but damn if DPRK doesn't feel like a big sick cosmic joke. So close to such an advanced and (relatively) free and prosperous population, and yet so so far. Frankly I think car ownership is a pretty good barometer for quality of life. If the average worker can still find a way to get his/her hands on a set of wheels - things can't be THAT bad. People talk about it as though it's a luxury but IMO it's really not - it boosts peoples' economic ability immensely, it means they can quickly escape oppressive regimes or dicey economic situations, it means they can visit their family a hundred miles away over a weekend and be back in time to make it to work on monday... It's a wonder of modern life that we as commoners should hold onto for dear life, and that it's denied to such a large population for such bullshit arbitrary political reasons is effing tragic.

I think one of the most important things that you skipped over Nolan, is that in some ways, the current state of North Korea is arguably the fault of the west/US/NATO. Many of their worst years in terms of industry and famine were following the Korean War, when the US and allies dropped more ordinance on the country than literally any other place on earth. Their industry and farmlands were basically irrecoverable, and large parts of the country are still uninhabitable. Now, historically, the one thing that almost always happens following major wars, political upheaval and famine, is that dictators tend to pop up and take over. And, over time, by continuing blockades, refusing to negotiate more friendly terms, massive sanctions, etc, it was only possible for the situation in DPRK to get worse. If the entire rest of the world is refusing them any kind of nicety, especially after they destroyed most of the countries infrastructure, I think it's inevitable that the dictatorship and paranoia only continues. I'd also caution against believing some of the wackier stories about the country and their leadership, as a lot of them are almost always false. The haircuts one, the one about blowing up his uncle with an AA gun, the not peeing one, etc. A lot of them are either conscious lies by propaganda outfits like the CIA, satire that doesn't translate well to westerners (a lot of this apparently), or made up out of whole cloth by the DPRK defector "industry" in SK, which pressures defectors into making up wilder and wilder stories in order to earn a living, as many of them are not allowed to hold other jobs by the SK government, and are threatened to be sent back if they toe out of line. The documentary "loyal citizens of pyongyang in seoul" shows a lot of how defectors are treated. It's a really fucked up situation overall and I do have hope that both countries can reunify in my lifetime.

Thank you. I almost couldnt finish because Nolan kept referencing the most blatant SK propaganda (Personal toilet cars? Come on). Please check the sources of any ridiculous stories you hear about North Korea. 99% are fabrications from the CIA-owned Radio Free Asia or the South Korean government and the defector industry.

Well, the North Koreans tried to take over South Korea by force, so the South along with their allies would retaliate. Even after the war, North Korea would be in a better position, as it had two friendly red giants; China & the USSR, right next door with a land border to China. South Korea on the other hand had their backs to the Yellow Sea. The fact that the South eventually prevailed socially & economically speaks the difference about the two systems...
