I guess they are referring to this as a "robot" light as a slight hint to the sci-fi look like in the game Portal. It's a very functional little light for £2. The case has possibilities for other projects, as do the modules in it like the control PCB and the COB array itself. The magnet would be quite useful for some applications too.

AAA batteries deserve to only be used in one type of device: Remote control. Why do the Chinese manufacturers insist on using them for just about bloody everything, notably torches? AA's hold significantly more energy.
@tbelding
@tbelding 5 жыл бұрын
Space. Adding the extra 40% of length would significantly increase the diameter of something like this. Personally, I'd call that a 'flashlight' chip, (or torch), not a bike chip. It's in every bleeding flashlight I've ordered. I want on, and off, and maybe a dimmer setting. I don't need a flashing flashlight. The other is that in flashlights/torches, many of the 3 AA torches are _also_ 18650 torches. If they used AAs, the diameter of the flashlight would be so large that the 18650 would rattle around.

I totally agree here. It does my head in as they aren't as cost effective. More often than not they are used in devices that don't even need to be made smaller, which is the only justifiable use for AAA's. I have some outdoor remote temperature sensors, AAA's. Kitchen timers, AAA's. Torches, AAA's. Computer mice, well ok if it's a small mouse. Grrrr. End rent :-)
@licensetodrive9930
@licensetodrive9930 5 жыл бұрын
Ok there are some things that warrant the use of AAA's due to their size, but there are too many with high drain and/or require a long life before changing batteries that really need to be designed to hold AA's, or better yet a 18650. The most recent "ugh, AAA's..." item I bought was a HT-175 thermal imager, nice device for the price (£83 in a Banggood sale), helps troubleshooting circuits etc., but they could've made the handle just 5mm longer to accommodate a 18650 cell instead of using a poxy 3xAAA holder. It can actually run at 5v so I designed & 3D printed a dummy battery with a USB plug on the end so I can power it from a USB bank but the battery cover then doesn't fit, so my ultimate goal is to take the circuitry from a poundland USB bank and combine it with the right sized lithium cell in a 3D printed case to make what would effectively be a "USB battery" for the HT-175.

Many, many years ago, flashing yellow warning lights were used on barriers around roadworks to stop people walking into the barrier (and ploughing through it, if drunk enough) at night. At university I found out that these were not only a nice source of large 9V batteries, but a dozen in a darkened room gave a nice effect if one was sufficiently drunk.

mystery capacitor could be part of the debounce switch circuit. Debounce is a switch with a cap that helps smooth out the press signal and keep the switch from being sensitive. We've all probably had a light, alarm clock, or something that for every quick button press, the bounce of the switch activates twice.

I got one of these. Didn't find it particularly good as the battery life was poor and the case seems to be made of slightly dried out stilton. Scavenged the magnet for future projects and put the COB in the case of a e3light GU10 - sadly £land don't seem to stock these any more but they have a good optical collimator/lens on the front. Hooked up to USB with a 10 Ohm resistor makes a very nice but gentle spotlight. The leftovers are in the bit box awaiting future projects, so good value for money.

By golly. I want one. The swivelly-thing is brilliant. Great idea. I'd hope to adapt it to hold a rechargeable li-ion. Or several. Maybe 18350's? So as to last a nice long time. Shouldn't matter if it's a bit heavier? The idea could scale up nicely to a more premium sort of product, bigger and prettier. Inductive charging would be cool, though very tricky to achieve in the presence of that metal hemisphere. But imagine being able to grab a light and move it to some convenient socket, say in the garage or shed, where there's no power wiring. Then just pop it back into a wired socket later on to charge up. Sure, a flashlight can do the same but not while looking so damn cool. :-)

If you think that AAA cells are bad, someone bought us an alarm clock for a gift, about 25 years ago. It uses a single N cell. Those nasty things have never been widely stocked, so they cost more than an AA cell. To be fair, the clock runs for more than a year on an alkaline cell - providing that you never use the alarm. The maddening thing is that, if the fragile ceramic case didn't restrict access, there's room for an AA cell inside the thing.

The little capacitor is to make the low brightness setting less flickery as it's likely a 30ish % PWM wave driving it. You can observe a little bit of shimmer at the end during the current test of low brightness so the capacitor doesn't eliminate it all.
