@Jason Yuen Why do you think this won't happen on PC and Xbox soon? A lot of us thought we wouldn't see Ray Tracing done so effectively on consoles anytime soon. Yet, here we are... Also, Project Athia (Forspoken) is not exclusive to PS5. It's also coming to PC. That means it certainly possible elsewhere.
@mmmcrispyful
@mmmcrispyful 3 жыл бұрын
@Jason Yuen " i own a 5 thousand dollar pc, running an rtx 3090. i have owned the best PCs money can buy, for a full decade, so i know whats possible or not possible on pc." Hold up my guy...just because you have more disposable income to spend on your hobby does NOT mean anything. At all. It certainly does not prove that it isn't possible. There are 2 recent examples of "next-gen" streaming tech, Ratchet and UE5. UE5 in particular, the devs have already said that their PS5 demo run on Series X and PS5 "just fine". I'd rather take their word on it than yours. And since Insomniac are 1st party Sony devs, I don't expect them to comment on what is or isn't possible on other platforms. "Ray Tracing isnt "next gen". its been done the last 2-3 years, its just that the hardware were not really capable of doing the tracing efficiently." RT *is* one of those features that defines what's possible on "next-gen" hardware. Just because *you* think it isn't does not make it so. "I played Cyberpunk 2077 at MAX settings, running on an rtx 3090 (thats why i bought the card for), and even at full settings, it doesnt come close to ratchet and clank." Irrelevant. You're comparing apples to oranges. Both had different design goals (open world vs. linear) and constraints (one is multi-platform, one is exclusive). So very different design goals. Still, none of this proves your point, that this won't be on PC and xbox "anytime soon". "... but, i think because of the ps5 ssd, there seems to be WAY MORE particle effects on the ps5." More particle effects on screen have *nothing* to do with the SSD. And you're calling people stupid 🤨 "The developer being interviewed specifically mentions, its not just the ssd speed, but the removal of the bottlenecks for the i/o to do its job. SSDs have been used for storage and nothing else. but in the PS5, its being used like secondary RAM." All old-gen to next-gen i/o will see generational leaps in bandwidth and latency. This situation is not unique to PS5. FYI, Alex just recently demo'd UE5 on PC with impressive streaming and load times on NVME SSDs compared to traditional HDDs. And that's with more detail/asset density than the PS5 demo and without RTX IO/DirectStorage benefits. "and whatever they're doing on the ps5, its working. we dont need to know how or why, it just is." When you have talented devs like Insomniac making games for your hardware, you get impressive results like this. But to say that they're aren't impressive looking games on other platforms is extremely disingenuous. "I am a top end pc gamer, and i never get excited or impressed by most things." Oh, that must suck for you. "Ratchet and Clank running on the ps5 BLEW ME AWAY." It blew me away too, I can't wait to get it on my PS5.

One thing that most people don't realize is that almost every asset in every game ever made started off as a super high quality model and then it gets culled down for different LODs. I remember reading about John Romero in the 90's telling artists to stop using excessively high resolution images for the base art that would later become game textures.

To be fair, a lot of people, especially on PC, misunderstand the idea because we simply haven't had games literally designed around the target hardware having an ultrafast SSD and hardware-accelerated IO. Every single user on the target hardware having that spec. So they fall back to traditional SSD advantage concepts like 'fast booting' and 'fast one-time level loads' and 'fast quick travel'. And they say, "The [insert fastest Samsung SSD] can be installed on PC already, you console peasants!" - because they're just not thinking about the application of ultrafast SSD and hardware-accelerated IO to core design pillars of the game. Designing a game for moment-to-moment gameplay/level design/pacing that depends on the presence of ultrafast SSD and dedicated hardware-assisted IO. You can't do that yet on PC, because the installed base of ultrafast SSD + DirectStorage (essential) doesn't exist yet in profitable numbers, simple as that.

@@LordRaydenTube Yes, from a baseline installed user/demographics perspective. We tend to use a nebulous "PC could do this" without considering the "can't" - which is actually having a target market to sell to. We're not there yet, but it's coming along. For now, even the wealthiest of multiplatform publishers (Ubisoft, etc.) can't include mandated superfast SSD + DS min spec for their PC versions, not to mention still accommodating last-gen console which also affects that, so tightly integrated use of new gen storage-IO within game design is off the table.
@CorrosiveCitrus
@CorrosiveCitrus 3 жыл бұрын
@@griffgames9538 This is the great thing about consoles having SSDs now, it will finally drive the industry forwards to build games that utilize them more. Most PC players don't understand the benefits of a fast SSD, because all the games currently available are built to assume the game will run from a HDD. We can see in testing that a faster SSD has next to no effect on load times than a slower one. The game engines aren't designed to process the data from storage that fast. But now this is changing (such as UE5 being recoded to make use of faster storage access. and direct storage being implemented within windows), finally we'll see this under valued part of the system be put to use. This is great stuff for console and PC players alike (Though it is frustrating for those of us who have had an SSD for years now that it has taken this long lol).

I'm talking 60fps mode of course because comparing graphics from the 30fps mode is irrelevant. 30fps should never be a trend, which is the target for Rift Apart. RT60fps mode is 1260p for the most part which is 1/3 of a game like hitman 3 which looks much sharper especially in motion. Ratchet still looks great though and art direction is stellar. 60fps mode could have been better and should have been target this day and age. Saying nothing else comes close and "current standard" is dumb. Current standard is dynamic 4K60, not dynamic 4K30.

Awesome interview. That was pretty informative and greatly interesting. I am not done yet with the game, since I have to work this week-end, but holy cow is the game amazing and gorgeous. This is the first true “next gen” title in my book, and the thought that this game is out when the gen hasn’t even got to its first full year makes me incredibly excited for what’s to come. Seriously, the fact that the cut-scenes are rendered in real-time?? I noticed that when I switched my armour and the one I chose was displayed during the cut-scene… I was like “that’s not pre-rendered!?” 😮 Seriously, congrats to everyone at Insomniac who worked on this game, from their home to boot! The issue I’m seeing with Horizon 2 is that it will move from being completely open world at all times to being broken into chunks during some/most encounters. This will be so it can provide very dense encounters within smaller areas between traveling the open world similar to GoW. This is where the game will be held back. The PS5 wouldn’t have an issue with maintaining visuals in a totally open world, whereas PS4 would have issues. Both consoles need to have parity.

Once games start coming out with better engines like the new Unreal engine, utilizing AMDs fidelity fx, and finally tapping into the horsepower of the ps5 with RDNA 2. We should have games in the future running 4k 60 with ray tracing or 1440 p 120fps ray tracing. I actually wouldn't mind that 😊

This is the exact content I’m happy about seeing. Keep it up DF team. It is awesome being able to get the perspective of the creators of the games we love to play to see what they did to get it out for us to enjoy. I was fortunate enough to talk to the creator of Vodoo Vince at Pax East when the remaster came to Xbox one. It was just awesome being able to hear how he came up with the characters and the game concepts etc. hope to see more of this

@@S197_GT_Gotti so playing a game on fidelity mode instead of performance that doesn’t affect you in anyway whatsoever makes him a goof? yea your logic makes since. no matter what setting you play it on the game is amazing and it sure as hell shouldn’t bother you whether someone plays it on one setting or another.

@@S197_GT_Gotti It’s actually not bad. I’ll admit some 30fps games look rough and can hurt the eyes, but this one is pretty smooth overall. Can we get this tech to be used in games with super long range sniping? Have it render a perfectly LODed viewport whenever you scope in. Or maybe not, my favorite part of any Battlefield game is when my scope turns on PS1 mode.
@asdf_asdf948
@asdf_asdf948 3 жыл бұрын
I believe absolutely yes. For example imagine a game where you can be in several different dimensions and you can jump between them with the press of a button, there's nothing to prevent you from having a weapon that can put your viewport into another dimension and snipe someone from across the map.
