Inside The $20 Million Embraer Legacy 450 Private Jet
0:00 - Intro
This is the Embraer Legacy 450. In 2008 the company surprised some observers when it revealed that the new Embraer Legacy 450, would be a completely fly-by-wire machine. Today we’re going inside the Embraer Legacy 450 to talk about everything you need to know about this incredible aircraft.
1:12 - Cabin
Inside, it comes as no surprise that Embraer has developed a high-quality, luxurious interior. Aboard the aircraft, there is room for seven to nine passengers, depending on the cabin layout. The cabin has a height of 6 feet or 1.83 meters on a flat floor, and a width of 6 feet 10 inches or 2.08 meters, and comes standard with four fully reclining club seats with buttery leather upholstery that slide on uncannily smooth rails and easily convert into a pair of sleeping berths.
The standard cabin includes a small refreshment center near the door, and the rear lavatory features a solid door, vanity, basin, vacuum toilet, and a window for natural light, a luxury not usually seen in an airplane of this size.
Embraer said the Legacy 450’s 150-cubic-foot or 4,250 cubic-liter baggage space is the largest in the 450’s category, and features 110 cubic feet or 3,100 liters in the main externally accessed compartment, and 45 cubic feet or 1,275 liters accessible from the rear of the cabin. It has a maximum cabin pressurization level of 6,000 feet or 1,830 meters at 45,000 feet or 13,700 meters, and state-of-the-art noise-reducing technologies.
Unique to Embraer, the entire cabin can be controlled from the upper tech panel. Honeywell’s Ovation Select cabin management system runs the optional high-definition video and surround-sound audio environment, while the optional voice and Wi-Fi-enabled connectivity offer Inmarsat, Gogo, or Iridium platforms.
3:53 - Cockpit
In the cockpit, the Legacy 450 is the first business jet under $50 million to offer full fly-by-wire technology featuring sidestick flight controls, and a Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics suite with four 15.1-inch high-resolution LCD displays. The cockpit also offers an optional enhanced-vision system with a head-up display, electronic charts, maps, graphical weather depiction from an intuitive MultiScan weather radar system that sees up to 300 miles out, and an airport surface-management system.
The system minimizes pilot workload while incorporating data from just about every known safety system. The MultiScan weather radar has the predictive capability to guide pilots not just around bad weather but over it. Fusion can grow to accommodate future technology add-ons such as voice recognition, surface guidance, and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast, the future of air traffic control.
The traditional control yokes are gone, replaced by side sticks connected to a fly-by-wire flight-control system. FBW eliminates the mechanical linkages between the flight controls and the flight-control surfaces. Pilot inputs are combined with sensor inputs and computerized flight-control laws for crisper and faster inputs that do not deviate from the aircraft’s performance envelope. FBW appeared first on fighter jets and, later, on airliners.
6:34 - Engine and Performance
The Legacy 450 is powered by Honeywell HTF7500E turbofans with a TBO of 8,000 hours, each producing 6,540 lbs of thrust. This combination will rocket the aircraft to a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.83, a maximum cruise speed of 462 knots, and up to a maximum cruising altitude of 45,000 feet or 13,700 meters, with an average hourly fuel burn of 250 to 350 gallons or 950 to 1,325 liters.
The Legacy 450 has a maximum range of 2,900 nautical miles, which is 3,340 miles or 5,370 kilometers. At the maximum takeoff weight of 35,274 lbs or 16,000 kg, the aircraft typically requires about 4,000 feet or 1,220 meters of takeoff runway, and a minimum landing distance of 2,090 feet or 637 meters. The engines will rocket the airplane off the ground to 43,000 feet in just 22 minutes. A climb to FL 450 will be possible later as the aircraft becomes lighter. The maximum net payload of 2,921 lbs or 1,325 kg and a full-fuel payload of 1,627 lbs or 738 kg.
8:13 - Purchase and Charter Price
The base purchase price for a new Legacy 450 is $16 million before options, and the charter price ranges between $4,000 and $5,000 per hour. Naturally, prices will vary depending on availability, fuel prices, ground fees, and more.
8:30 - Operating Cost
While the annual fixed cost is roughly $450,000 to $550,000, the average hourly operating cost is estimated at $3,000 to $3,500.
