In the late 1990s Boeing recognized a market demand for an aircraft that could carry more passengers over longer distances without the need for refueling stops.
The development of the 777-300ER involved significant enhancements over the 777-300. These included structural reinforcements, wing modifications, and most importantly, the incorporation of the General Electric GE90-115B engines, which are among the most powerful jet engines in commercial aviation.
The aircraft first took to the skies in 2003, completing its maiden flight without incident, which marked the beginning of a rigorous flight-testing program, and in March 2004, the airplane received certification from the FAA and the EASA, with the first model being delivered to Air France, marking the start of its commercial operations.
