In the 14th-floor Kochi apartment of Rakesh Ramachandran and Bindu Rakesh, professional insights into design are abundant. Both lighting designers, the couple also benefit from the expertise of their daughter Arya, a newly-minted architect. However, the project involved harmonizing their distinct viewpoints, on the concept of 'Ikigai', the project embodies the Japanese concept of 'a reason for living'.
Upon entering, it's greeted by a two-part entryway: a wood-wrapped sit-out with sleek concrete seating and a majestic Bonsai tree, and a dimly lit foyer that immediately sets the tone, with a suspended Torque steel partition and a bronze family sculpture. The space, accented by a statement light that creates the illusion of a floating black line, is divided into formal and informal sections, each featuring custom-designed furniture and unique art pieces that enhance the home's modern charm.
The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space is both functional and artistic, with a hidden sliding partition for flexibility. The dining area features a concealed bar with a custom-made exposed metal bottle holder and a minimalistic bar counter that appears to float weightlessly. The passageway, leading to the bedrooms, is encased in fluted stained wood and lime plaster, adding warmth and adding to the home's monochrome theme. The TV room, with its timber slats and concealed acoustic boards, offers a perfect blend of entertainment and relaxation.
In conclusion, this apartment is the result to innovative design and personal taste, blending minimalism with functional and aesthetic elegance. This has resulted in a space that is not only visually stunning but also a true reflection of the family's lifestyle and sensibilities.
