Stowe is truly astonishing. Everything so Roman/Greco all admidst in the damp cloudy Britain countryside so strange. So many of these stately homes are bizarre in their Italianate wannabe qualities. Sadly these spaces are not that comfortable to exist in. And like here far too large to avoid bankruptcy. Far better to envision this in Italy or smaller. Alas it is a super school. I have friends that have attended and they all have said it was a dramatic setting to grow up in.

Stowe itself though remained in the family for the next couple of generations. The second Duke, the massive debtor whose 1848 sale failed to sufficiently recoup the family fortune, left the estate to his son the third Duke, and when that successor died in 1889 without a male heir, Stowe was bequeathed to the third Duke's daughter, Lady Kinloss. It was her son who finally sold the estate in 1921, the grand house soon thereafter transformed into the prestigious public school it remains today.

A governor of Aotearoa New Zealand back in the 1960s was a Cobham - a Britain by birth. As time went by, having a British citizen as Governor General became genuinely unpalatable by the wider population-not Anglophiles though. It was decided then, that each future Governor General would be a New Zealander chosen by the government of the day on the recommendation of the local gentry, or establishment and Maori Elders. This is often a reward now for service to the country and the community living there. The Governor General is, now the Kings representative, but anyway, the ruling Royal domiciled in England. That is Charles III.

I saw a football pitch, Gladius, and TCU is going to play last year's Champion from the Ivy League first game of the season in the new Superdome complex. Gladius teams will be established around the world and in north america too, so plenty of opportunities for a great Gladius player from Stowe to play for an Ivy League school, play against the best in college football, and earn a million dollars before they turn 22. I'm very interested in the stone masonry. There will be greater demand from the middle class for such masonry, and the greatest profits are from supplying the growth from the middle income segment which is prioritizing growth from equity. They like their middle class neighborhood, they don't want to leave it for something less idealic, you have to offer a great deal to move someone from Texas to New York City. Waterwheel! That could be something utilized today! The primary difference between a move in ready or a custom house is the masonry. Future buyers shouldn't want to concern themselves about certain aspects to architecture unless they are planning on establishing themselves in a custom house neighborhood consistent with the neighborhood's HOA. If it's a custom neighborhood, people who build custom houses build in it, and no organization which builds corporate communities build in these neighborhoods, and it allows me to build more houses than luxury houses, because I build condos, attached to green energy in the city, and luxury houses where I want to build a nice town in the suburbs. I'll have a school at Wentworth Woodhouse which can compete for Ivy League team participation, or TCU scholarships.

Much of the family fortune was generated through slave labor in the West Indies. The first Duke's wife brought a considerable inheritance upon her marriage, including a lucrative plantation, worked by slaves she owned, in Jamaica.

Great video. But it kills me than common Brits think of this as "their" history when this ultimate example of wretched excess was bought with the misery of the majority of the population working seventeen hours days, their growth stunted by malnutrition, and their sons sent out to subjugate one colonial people after another. Truly a monument to exploitation.
@chrishall744
@chrishall744 Жыл бұрын
I take it you are American? There is always a bigger picture to what you are saying! Most of the worlds history was built on slavery and exploitation. It doesn’t make it right but should we live in shame or make the best of our shaded history. I am British and proud. I have nothing to be shamed of but I’m not for one minute, unaware of our methods of empire expansion.

I think the Georgian label is too broad, it encompasses the Baroque, Rococo and neoclassical. I adore early Georgian architecture but really dislike regency, neoclassical stuff. Nothing more beautiful than a rectangular red brick with white accents, or honey-colored bath stone 3 story George II country house.Thats the best architecture- always tastefully sublime, never looks dated.
