Sci-fi is often a more honest reflection of the real world than you’d think-and a fully automated future is closer than ever. To stress the need for a human touch in this age, Toyota created an animated series that both expresses the visceral feeling of driving a car and honors the traditions of hand-drawn anime developed generations ago.

Subaru also was greatly involved in the production/funding of an anime called Wish Upon the Pleiades. It came out in 2015 and while the premise isn't about cars at all it incorporated the brand well into the series.

Yeah, but that would cost an order of magnitude more nowadays. And something like Akira has an insane number of cells and detail, so it would be even more expensive.

@@YouAreDreamingRightNowa lot of ghibli films use 3D and digital environments actually. Especially in compositioning. Cell animation has been dead for a while now. Everything is done with computers.

absolutely agree with every comments here. However no one is willing to take on that job and work nowadays. Everyone wants to take the easy way out with more money. Because there are many different ways for them to make more profit than working for a studio for such a low rate.

Sidenote--When I imagine what cars should be post-gas, I imagine those cop cars. When you ditch combustion engines you can design something that is shaped differently than the same old aero-UN-dynamic heaps that you see everyday on the streets.

They even show the AE86 for a split second yet not a single mention of the anime about racing a 90's Toyota that preceded this one...? It's from 2001 and it incorporates everything they talk about in this video... Not to take away from this really nice ad for the GR86, nicely done.
