This is why I have always believed that the military should have a transition period for soldiers getting out if the military. A group to help them decompress and adjust to civilian live and also help them find jobs. It would also be smart to do this with prisoners. It could really go a long way with preventing them from reoffending.

I'm a disabled Veteran from a military family, being born on an Army base. My mother's ancestors fought for the Union my fathers the Confederacy. I've never I heard either side bemoaning how many "Aryans" have died in support of our military. The basis for the majority of this bigotry and racism is family orientation. My father's side most certainly expressed racist and prejudiced views, my mothers had little to no contact with people of other races, so they harbored minor levels of prejudice, because there are frequently reasons for stereotyping, and it frequently results in prejudice born of ignorance. Because white men are being bombarded with the "replacement narrative more and more are going too far right. I believe a level of Civil War (disintegration) is inevitable and likely not far away.

Hey Vice, hire a couple of journalists or collaborate with freelance journalists who have served in our military. Service members (SM) from different branches have different perspectives as well, and the active duty experiences of a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, and Airman will be different. A combat arms SM will have a different experience than combat support. That will give you a much better look into this fringe movement. I just don't think Ben has any idea what he's talking about when he postulates what is going on in the military, or what is going on in the head of a SM before, during, and after their service.

@@patrickquine3945 BLM are terrorists. They use violence to pursue and achieve political goals. I’ve worked in many areas that were under riot by BLM and Antifa. I’ve seen first hand what they do. They murder people, set fire to blocks, beat people, pull people from their vehicles and beat them, encourage violence, carry out terrorist attacks, and straight up assassinations on a few occasions. Their rhetoric alone has led to bloodshed. Look at the Dallas sniper, and Baton Rouge gunman. Both of them directly cited BLM as an inspiration. Even the so called “leaders” of BLM claim to be marxists and openly speak about the need for violence to achieve their goals. And let’s not even get into how bad Antifa is. They shot two black kids, mocked one, then executed him in the middle of the street. So much for black lives mattering. Or how about when they tried to murder a 17 year old in Kenosha. Fortunately he was able to defend himself, but that just goes to show how violent these people are. Their goals aren’t genocide? First off, that’s a super low bar. You’re basically saying “Yeah, they destroy peoples homes and livelihoods, murdered dozens and dozens of people, beat people, pull white people from their vehicles and beat them, encourage violence, and have led directly to numerous mass shootings, but at least their goal isn’t genocide!”. Like, really? Congratulations, want a cookie? If that’s the standard you hold people to, you have no morality. Secondly, why does that matter? Are you trying to say there are genocidal people? Where are they? What have they done? Outside of a few cases, which admittedly are tragic and should be condemned, they aren’t out there doing anything. They certainly don’t have the support or power that BLM and Antifa have.

Inside The Military's Extremism Problem | Field Notes It must be difficult for people who have not served in our military to fully understand what such experience is like. I served in the Marine Corps in the early 1980’s (Cold War) in the MOS of 4421; Legal Services Specialist. It was an easy admin job compared to most other jobs in the Corps. My duties dealt with typing up charge sheets for courts-martial or Article 15 hearings, JAG Manual investigations, filing documents, researching base orders, etc., all before personal computers were introduced. I saw a lot of abuse of power and some cover-ups to protect officers’ carriers. What a didn’t see was extremism. Yes, there was some self-segregation based on race during off-time, but racism was not prevalent. Ben pointed out extremism increases when troops return home from combat. Perhaps this is why I didn’t see extremism or racism during my time in service which was a time of relative peace. Starting in boot camp, I recall our drill instructor saying to us “There are no black Marines or white Marines. There are only green Marines. Some are light green and some are dark green but our blood is red and we are brothers one and all.” or words to that effect. Racism was not tolerated. Professor Kathleen Belew of Northwestern University observed “we know how it works, we just don’t have the real-time information to know exactly where we are.” Around 2010, while working for a government services contractor, I recall a warehouse worker was fired for accessing a porn site on a government computer. By then, computers were ubiquitous, and access were controlled by use of a common access card (CAC), which identifies who is logged onto a computer. And I recall our systems administrator cautioning us with “Every keystroke is recorded somewhere.” The point is the DoD has the capability to identify who embraces extremist views. The DoD can identify the enemy within. Ben said “The Senate Armed Services Committee literally put a stop to it. They put a line in a budget this year to direct the Pentagon to stop looking into this. And to stop putting funds into this.” This is surprising to me. However, I could not find the legislation he is referring to. Something I did find of interest is a Congressional Research Service paper titled FY2022 NDAA: Extremism in the Military IN11779 (congress.gov)
@TheMcgojoh

Interesting to hear of your service during the cold war and while the Marines may have their saying about "only green Marines" I think you'll have to admit the USA does have issues with racial tension/ Here in Canada I had a friend who was with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in the mids 80's to get his "wings" and after the Somalia affair he said the regiment was quite full of Nazi sympathizer's (de rigueur of the times youth in the Skinhead movement and such I'm sure you'll recall) and racist and his wasn't surprised by the happenings that led to the Regiments disbandment. That said I believe there are problems across all Western Militaries with extremism and with the youth in particular it seems to break out in cases of leather and swastikas look no further to Germany or the Donbas region to see cases of the minority of soldiers following such trends. What worries me about the USA is that most of these guys seem long in the tooth, and they should have dropped such notions by now.

Good points and thanks for sharing your own personal experience. My only concern comes from when the DoD or military has the capability to tackle and look deeply into new trends of extremism in armed services but doesn’t bother using its power. It’s something they’d probably want to do anyways, figuring out what they need to reform or being able to say “they all go extreme after they leave, they’re still somewhat down to earth in the corps” are both strong ways to show the public their concerns are being listened to. Growing up post 9/11, I know many people who graduated HS and went into the military but would avoid a branch because its recruits were “too weird” and rarer instances of people who used to want to be a soldier but stopped because the military had politicized itself/with help from Congress from things like Gay enlistment and the Punisher/operator culture.

If the Republican party believes the military has a PR problem from all these negative reports coming out, maybe the Senate Armed Services Committee should not have barred that budget line to investigate the issue. The US government has always been accused of a transparency and accountability problem, so why should the largest, most expensive military in the history of the world also not be held to their own account? If the perception of extremism is truly what is hurting their enlistment numbers, maybe they need to be providing concrete evidence of its real prevalence instead of just hinting at its extent? And maybe it might be more to the point that military service and the benefits it claims to provide are not offering much of a sustainable, prospering lifestyle and career path as it once did.

But then when those angry young white men get their hands on the overpowered gear in the military, but none of the Hollywood-promised glory, they return home with maybe little more than a free buffet at Golden Corral on Veterans Day. @Benito Salazar I am in the uniform, still serving and a hair shy of 20 years, multiple combat deployments and I speak a couple of languages. All of us Are not woke. The conversation i ahvr overheard, the centralized racsim masked as patriotism in certain circles is at best alarming, at worst very very cancerous. Both my parents were retired career police officers in a major northeastern city. MY Family is black and latino- majority of us are educated. The racsim my parents witnessed was loathsome. My mother was one of THE FIRST black women to graduate from that cities police academy- I witnessed how hard it was with old white guys and their prejudices on my mother( during the late 70s going into the mid 80s). My parents membership in the FOP offered me nor my friend no protection from harassment by white cops in that city-full stop, while watching our white counterparts be given passes for transgressions like loitering, that we were not committing. I joined the military some time ago and there are pockets where the BS does not stop. Sure the are a fair amount of equal protection that our forces guve our service members BUT IF YOU THINK that there is not a good ol' boy network still alive in the military, you are wrong- very very wrong. People have prejudices, period. The problem is that some see their prejudices as a sense of" its just how things are" entitlement. I am.not saying that every white person in uniform or with a badge is a racist as that has nit been my experience, but the people who have gone out of their way to try to F-with me have happened to have badges and have been in uniform. Not saying all my interactions have been that way but for some reason, some people thing their badge or rank is the equalizer to my 6' 240lb frame- it's not.

---Important insite of the issue with military ---(very long but very informative for the issue)..5 years active army med retired are my credentials in relation to the matter....the military it self is not the cause or source of the extremism, in army race disappears we are all green, and what seeing is a side effect of the absolute machine that military is, ours is the most in sync highly optimized of machines all parts work in unison almost by nature, military is great and a great life surrounded by people you have absolute trust in even if don't know them, as any minute you could be relying on each other for your life and survival. if any task need be done in military for exp, everybody that's not otherwise engaged jumps into said task to complete it and get it done there's no oh no don't want do that and insert excuse to walk away etc, if someone needs help that help is only ever as far away as the next soldier, when joining the army it's hard to adjust to the machine as society the real problem today is way way to independent focused, and people tend more selfish then not, and you have a healthy distrust of others if dont know them and understandably so, so when join the initial training is so hard mentally to adapt because of our independent minds and ways, but as it progresses we get to trust other recruits more and more etc And by end your a 100% team minded individual, we need to promote individuality not independence humans from time immemorial have been a community tribe team family clan species and modern Society with all it's advances in tech and all, have literally taken the need for us to be as team focused and only self focused outside of family, and even family's are very distant or promoting independence today, and that is the straight opposite of military. Military is awesome in the sense you can walk around complete strangers say in a new post but they are also military then you can 100% not have to be distrustful guarded or reserved, that alone is such a freeing thing that even I didn't realize how much stress and negativity that is non existent due to that!! when being med retired and transitioning back, man society is what I can easily see radicalizing ex military, cuz we go from surrounded by team and trusted folks 24/7 to having to go on a alert mode akin to what we are at while down range , and the absolute selfishness and lack of that comradely alone is more then enough to trigger us it's complete culture shock we experienced it in reverse joining but being assimilated for x years then having to break from the hive is another total culture shock and one that we almost feel abandoned by, now add any disgruntled politcal protesting citizen, saying things that's basically further alienates all your service and compounds that loneness yeah it's not a healthy situation, politics are not the army and certainly not it's volunteered men and women who are citizens and arguably love the country far more then the political activist raging, should never blame or take anythjng politically charged and direct it at a servicemen/woman they couldn't of done anything about whatever it is no matter how much u think otherwise and more then likely we probably would agree with said activist on any legitimate issues the gov has, but instead of getting a ally in us the comments and tone come at us while we are already mindfucked and alone trying to readapt to this overly selfish way of life that is sickeningly inefficient compared to the military way of life, yeah efficiency we have a whole new reverence and its another teigger at first when things are done less so, and also sadly while in uniform alot of the country's people are great and shake hands buy meals and appreciate us and it feels great and makes one feel accepted if ya will, now being a veteran or retireee transitioning out, the uniform is gone, and that same acceptance is not there typically. there are those that if they know still do and y'all are truly beacons of light in the darkness of our figuring it all out again, but the lack of that now that we aren't actively servicing just further alienates our feelings and adds to the selfish society thing.... So a lot of the extremism that developes I can almost guarantee that it happens in the transition out, also mind not everyone is transitioning out cuz they want to, I got to serve 5 years and would of been for life, if didn't get cut short with medical retirement, so that makes that even uglyer a situation that we already feeling abandoned a bit by what we loved and committed to, to further face isolation ignorance misguided angers as we adapt back, it takes time for all of us some more then others so keep that in mind when you see a veteran or even one that's in a extreme group now, bet they faced a lot of what I spoke above and they got pushed right into the open arms of something familiar just desperate for acceptance but once accepted and in a family again please believe we are warriors and I would expect every warrior to fiercely defend their family be it blood or chosen wouldn't be much a warrior if didn't.. I mean the transition and having to relearn the selfish society again really in feeling is much like a cheating partner, it's the betrayal feeling expressly from something that you were committed to, our citizens forget that our military all of it members are committed to you all it's our oath and we are very proud of it we will gladly fight for and die for any one of the us citizens , (mind not the fuctards that are evil or being criminal for criminal sake why felons don't have same rights they aren't technically citizens in full standing anymore) so yeah your military and it's veterans are dealing with the blatant shock if our societys inefficientys and trying to not feel abandoned and betrayed it takes awhile to get our minds around it all so be understanding with us because trust even if we denie it we really do need the support and help during that period and the way we get treated during could easily affect us becoming a extremest or welcomed and functional member of society again.. hopefully this opens up a few eyes on it now I kept it very basic there are tons more nuanced issues etc but the heart of the situation I think is expressed above,. And sadly I don't think people realize how vulnerable we really are in that period I mean coming from. Years of war etc we must be beast etc and ya sure when our minds are healthy but we are wounded animals for the time being, don't provoke us, but offer us support and it will make so so much of a difference can promise this my oath as a soldier that as a retiree I still feel held to, as difference between vet and retirees is that retired members still maintain their rank veteran don't but they certainly deserve the respect their rank attained in service was, so yeah society needs a readjustment for sure and as we created society it's also on us to fix it we all can see lots of issues with society as a whole bitching about it not going do much but keep splintering people into sides etc, we need to come together as a whole and as a whole restructure and reorganize what society is , which sadly I don't see happening as it stands now but it's not impossible and he'll if we were a mandatory service country I could see it being achievable but the independence factor is so deeply in trenched it's both paradoxicaly it's strength and weakness and both it's gradual undoing and the x factor to change to save it. We humans sure are a paradoxical bunch of parasites arnt we... (Until we colonised off earth we are much more by definition parasite then anything else and that if you want touch into the ufo alien theory's and he'll a.i too y'all are welcome.... is why I can guarantee we haven't had mass contact yet, we are a planet of warlike and hostile to one another intelligent parasites, no alien race would want to bring such into the fold and neither would we, none of us would want to go jump into anywhere there's a parasite infestation and ones that are as smart and deadly as we, yep we have to stop fighting each other and become our next selves in our evolution, it's on us to unite and colonise space and give our host a much needed relief from us. Hell every single resource we could ever need is in our backyard the asteroid field, we have the technology now, if united as planet we could be colonizing the local system in next 30 years, when we work together in mass miracles are born, and ai scare? Make damn sure ai knows that there's is a resource abundance in said astroid field and they will never have to compete with us for resources which is the one scenario that guarantees all the A. I nightmares and scares they would efficiently remove us the obstacles to said resources but don't have to if we make push into space proper., And the combined wealth of elites and or the combined budgets of the now united nations of the planets defence forces could easily go into a basic living fund for all and crypto is already shown acceptance of a digital currency and that is the ticket to a basic living fund to work world wide ....Man I'm 35 tempted to make a new age presidency run need Kickstarter lol as no big corrupting family business or political ties to influence me or to lean on for funds in campaign.. man we could easily unite. Now we say Putin played bad guy intentionally seeing the way it would unite that part of world and allowing us to push it further to unite as one be would love that and drop back from war china would be absolute beast and nessisary on the manufacturing part and well the odd ball out is n Korea and well if all the world don't change them a astroid could be arranged to fix it space is just so darn unpredictable.... Lol. Ok I'm done for now.. unity is the way forward and key to our survival as species and yeah we always are our worst enemy and take our selves down it's maddening .

I think you all need to define what "extremism" and "far right" actually means in the context you're using it in. Because it kinda comes off like it's supposed to be vague and anyone who speaks out of line can get the label. And if we have a system that is driving people to distrust and feel disdain for the government in unprecedented numbers, do you think maybe there could be something rotten with the system that drives people to these conclusions?

Matt you know what "Far-Right" means and you know what "extremism" means, there's nothing vague about it.

Yes, lack of education. Also the fact that student loans are causing people to be in debt most of their lives does not help. Education needs to be taken more seriously and become more integrative. It feels like a lot more people are unable to comprehend anything past grade 3 level knowledge. Other things are health and infrastructure, mininum wage. Minimum wage has not gone up much, while housing, rent, food, and everything else has gotten exponentially more expensive. 50% of millennials are living with parents, and the generational wealth gap is already causing a lot of problems.

Really? Seems like extremism is pretty obvious in that they promote and train to commit violent acts to get their way. That is literally what all extremist, aka terrorists groups do. The only difference between an extremist and a terrorist group is the terrorists groups have actively carried out the violent attacks. And the far right are those who tend to (not all) to lean toward extreme right wing ideas such as fascism. Some to extreme nationalist and race based politics. Or those combative to minorities that don't fit their group. Both terms are pretty well defined in literature on and offline. So I have to wonder why you are confused by the definitions? Or if you are just trying to muddy the definitions.

These veterans that want to over throw the government have Tri Care healthcare, GI Bill benefits and pensions all paid by American taxpayers who will never have access to these benefits. There needs to be a post service contract of behavior that states if you become a "terrorist" you forfeit these benefits. If you are active duty there is no difference between these service people and previous service peoples in the government that were convicted of crimes of espionage.
