Inside the Mind of Griffith - An Analysis of Good and Evil
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - - - - - -- - - - - - - --
There are some of us who love Griffith, and some who hate his ass because of what he's done. Because it seems like all these other anitubers have done videos on Griffith, I felt like doing one too. That's kinda it.
Good and evil are two very connotative words. What is true evil? What is true good? I go into those topics whilst also going deep into the mind of Griffith and understanding where his motivation and drive originate from.

I’ve watched the anime and just started to read the manga, I’ve got to the water fountain scene and he brings up 2 dreams his own and his perception of guts. He says a dream could be devoting your life to master the way of your sword. And I think guts doesn’t notice this he just believes Griffith doesn’t value him as a friend, I know about the entire story thanks to almighty loli and believe that this scene and guts leaving actually break Griffiths trust, but causality needs this to happen at the same time

Why Griffith is an example on how to make a good antagonist of revenge story : 1. He has history with the main character, and was on good term for that period. Which enhanced his betrayal 2. He didn't just turn good to evil because the story needs it. Berserk has hinted multiple times that there's sinister thing about Griffith like when he death stares the minister or his face when he breaks guts' arm 3. He isn't cartoonishly evil. He's evil but the make sense one. He didn't just sacrifice his army for fun 4. He isn't punching bag for Guts or loser. He succeded multiple times and pose ab actual threat to Guts 5. There's reason behind his actions. During the eclipse, he has two choices, Live as crippled for his entire life or Prioritize his dream I didn't say that I didn't hate him for what he's done, I say that he's a perfect antagonist

I wouldn't agree that he has done more good than evil- the 'good' is just lowering the harm the HE CREATES, he is building the kingdom that gives safety from the crumbling of the world THAT HE CREATES. He is like an abuser that keeps the abusee locked, 'to protect them'. From the very begining he was a possesive abuser, that tries to manipulate people, and so is his 'savior' persona is also just another manipulation. The lives of those outside his control have become much worse, yes it is causality, but part of the story is to ask where free will come in, and if he hadn't came to the regular plane, the reality wouldn't have crumbled and monsters would have been less prevelant. IDK about the kushans though...

That's nonsense, he's bringing actual progress and prosperity to the world after a millennia of stagnation and poverty. Laws, technology, economy - we've seen it's all developing under Griffith's rule. Sure, it sucks in the short term for those outside of Falconia, but there was no other way for him to get reborn into the world. And now he's liberating land after land anyway. It's senseless to judge great, world-historical men like him based on evil acts against a small group of people you care about just because you're following their story.

Yes, the good you do in your life can overcome the evil. Guts is an example of that, he's killed hundreds of people, endangered children and even killed children. However his arc is understanding his evil, how it manifests and his guilt for it. He can't bring himself to look at Casca once he knows he triggers her, likely becauee he sexually assaulted her. He likely doesn't expect forgiveness or compassion for his actions because he doesn't give those to himself. Griffith however is entirely evil. People say he created a utopia, no he shifted reality into hell and kept just effigy people alive to feed in their souls for power. His conversation with Mule shows us that the souls of the dead are under his control and he sends them all to the same place, the vortex of dark souls. Griffith has 0 heroes features, even his accomplishments before he became Femto were selfish. To say that Griffith has any kind of good in him is outright wrong and overlooks not just with wide spread evil of transforming humanity to prey for the Apostles but his direct evil actions like Casca during the eclipse.

Bro wdym "no one hates him for the 'evil' " on quotes, did you really watched what I watched?! 🥴 yes Griffith was a human who understood his actions and then created a safe place for people to go to don't justify who he is. He killed, torture, r3pa, hullimate, manipulate, assassinated, kidnapped, was out of touch and it's responsible for guts living the rest of his life in constant torture after all guts wanted was to save him, see him achieve his dreams and even after he heard he sacrifice the band of the hawk guts didn't believe it and tried to rescue him and guess what Griffith does in return? Yes. He grab the last member of the Hawk and the only person guts truly cares about and gave guts ptsd where he said on quote on chapter 130: " I DIDN'T RUN AWAY!!" "I CAN'T RUN AWAY.." "Not from the last thing..." "...Seared into my right eye...!!" "...Fear...malice, I don't know... possibly it's both..." "But I can't never atone for this dark flame!!!" Guts was never the same and not only he is haunted by monsters but also by the memories. Griffith honestly has no excuse and he created a kingdom based on lies and self prophesies. Griffith would sacrifice all those people again if he could get more power and he would even go out of his way to go back and step on their Graves like he didn't do anything and it was just business

For me this video lacked focus. You had some interesting ideas like the infinite hunger of greed/ambition, nature vs. nurture when it comes to evil and looking at his actions from a utilitarian perspective. I think if you stuck to one of those points and made an entire video about that, it would have been far more interesting Just my 2 cents

Griffith reminds me of Madara from Naruto. He wants peace through domination, rather than relying on peace through cooperation. Good and evil, love and hate; these are strawman arguments. What makes Griffith such a great character and antagonist is his seemingly invincible rise to power, and the fear of volatility of his way to get it.

There was a comment in a KZfaq short that put it brilliantly: Griffith didn’t bring peace to Midland after being reborn but rather monopolized it. To put it bluntly, his dream of a kingdom after his revival as a human hit a new high and he wished to be the strongest kingdom. Returning to this, his kingdom is the only sanction that allows people to live without fear of the astral world creatures. A real life example would be the Nestly debate on how they said water isn’t a necessity and attempted in due part to buy up drinkable water companies which in turn they’d love to increase the price of water. Griffith harbors those who pledge allegiance but is not all loving and thus why the views on Griffith as time goes become ambilivilant from those in the kingdom or straight up hateful to those outside but nevertheless vital to the state of the current world

right off the bat griffith hasnt done any good. he only did things that APPEAR to be good. Obviously something bad is going to happen to falconia. We already know you can go through the rebirth process a second time so he may sacrifice falconia to become something above even the god hand. Or it could be something else. Either way its not a true utopia

like what good has he done? he created a city thats safe from the demons he brought into the physical realm? You cant manufacture a crisis and then claim you did something good by solving the crisis. you created it to begin with. And what about all the people who couldn’t make it to Falconia in time or were simply too far? If the rest of humanity isn’t wiped out yet it will be soon

even if he betrays them, I don't think he can defeat them. He played right into their hands and I don't see him being able to oppose causality. Now the moral dilemma of Guts killing Griffith isn't "should I let him go because he eventually led to good things", but "should I kill him when he is also my only son?". He doesn't give a damn about Griffith. Him also being his son is what makes the right choice uncertain.@@SOULSEEKERBEATS

It's really not that difficult to understand why Griffith does what he does it's actually very simple the reason is because it benefits him, for example sacrificing the band of the hawk allowed him to be reborn as a member of the God hand, which makes him one of the most powerful beings in existence, and even him playing the role of hawk of light the great savior of mankind is just him fooling people into thinking he's some kinda of God that would protect them as long as they believe in him and follow his command, which benefits Griffith because that means he has a almost unlimited supply of people willing to fight and die for him that proves that any good he has done is only because it benefits him so how is he good in anyway

Why does everyone seem to forget the state of the world outside of Falconia? Everywhere else is now filled with man eating monsters because Griffith merged the Astral world with the physical world. It's literally a hellscape for anyone who finds themselves anywhere but Falconia and the immediate surrounding regions. Merging the two worlds might be the worst thing Griffith has ever done.
