😂 He'd wipe the HW Division out Liston had very long arms and could put you out with either hand his jab could knock your teeth out Just because Ali beat him doesn't mean he wasn't a great fighter Ali beat lots of great fighters in 1964 nobody had any idea how great Ali was going to be Liston was thought to be unbeatable anybody can be beat even Ali got beat a few times Unfortunately for Liston after the two Ali fights he was never given a title shot again and he actually still did pretty well until his death but you could see age catching up with him at the end I'm guessing Liston as Champion was between 32-35 yrs old HW fighters win the title at that age all the time this day and age Ali was too quick smart and sharp for Sonny not many Heavyweights danced like Ali around the ring either still don't

​@@johntoomey4480 Liston actually peaked in 1958-1960. Even when he beat Floyd he was past his prime, and by the Ali fight he had trouble using his left hook and tired quick. Ali called him a 45 year old man in the conference cause that's exactly what he looked like.

Sonny got in with a bad crowd, from what I read he was great around kids and was happy to interact with them because they had no predetermination or judgement.

Check out the documentary footage of the event the press were called in advance. Ali sent his buddy Howard Bingham to knock on Sonny's door. Ali was scared to death of Liston and stayed in the bus with doors closed and windows closed with megaphone sticking out of window. Ali never left the bus! However this makes it even more impressive when he beat Sonny first time!

He's better than what's around today don't let his height fool you he had long tree trunk arms and could knock you out with a jab You have to realize Liston was a great fighter he lost his title to Ali in 1964 nobody had any idea including Liston knew how good Ali was I think if Sonny had lived he would of admitted Ali was probably the best ever or at least one of them

@@lilgreeneyesp8978 good question. Foul play for sure. Neither Liston nor his corner expected what Ali was showing them. I have a friend who spared with Liston in preparation for the second fight. He told me Sonny and his mobbed up handlers were VERY serious about the second fight. My friend, he has since passed, was a budding HW contender, told me getting hit with Sonny’s jab was like getting hit with a steel beam. After the postponement and what I and many historians believe, Sonny was threatened by The Nation of Islam. Sonny lost his edge and did not take training seriously. They had confidence in Ali but wanted to make sure so to speak. If you have not read it I highly recommend the bio Ali by Jonathan Eig. It’s the definitive bio of Ali warts and all and a great read

@@johntoomey4480 the mob was out of boxing then. Liston had Duke Nalon a fringe mobster. Palermo and Carbo were long gone. The mob left boxing when the IBC and Jim Norris, Truman Gibson, Carbo and Palermo got shut down. In late 50’s early 60’s. The mob had/ has lots of ways to make money other than boxing. My friend the fringe HW contender and occasional sparing partner of Sonny told me the fight was a set up. I don’t know think the punch was hard enough to break an egg. Of course that is just speculation.

@@retroboxingdocumentaries4817 Without question. As an 8 year old boy, I listened to the fight with my dad on an old radio. My entire life I believed what everyone did. I was a huge Ali fan, had no reason to question the outcome. Fast forward to my retirement about 10 years ago, I got the chance to catch up on things. When I saw their first fight I about fell on the floor. I couldn't believe my eyes. By the 3rd round I was certain that Liston wasn't fighting. I love sports, have always had a knack for seeing what was going on, catching details that others sometimes missed. I watch intently, have always been that way. My God, Liston was intentionally trailing far enough away so that his punches wouldn't reach. He was holding punches, guiding his jab to the left or right. I can point out dozens of times when Liston is in perfect position to lay down the hammer, but he does nothing. I feel compelled to give examples so forgive me. I chose the 3rd round randomly, saw many instances whereby Liston was holding back. In one example, Ali has his back to the ropes, Liston closes in, cocks his big right fist, moves it forward a couple inches, enough so that you can see it move forward, then he stops his right hand. He switches to throw a soft left to the body. At the time, Ali was stationary, a sitting duck, the left side of his head was wide open. The fight should have ended right there. Still the 3rd round. Ali is cornered, no way out Liston is on him, he throws a soft left to the body, the ref isn't there yet, instead of Liston tearing into Ali with big shots, he moves back and to one side, allowing Ali to walk out of the corner untouched. In another instance Ali is tired, he bends forward, covers both sides of his head with his gloves. He's stationary and expecting to be hit. Liston hovers over him, breathing down his neck. Liston throws a sissy uppercut that doesn't land, Ali stands up and moves away. The effort behind the uppercut and the speed of it are unmistakably 'girlish'. Normally he lands at least 2 hard shots, or at least throws 2 hard shots in that instance. Everyone talks about Ali's foot and hand speed but I can point out numerous instances in which neither were in play. Later in the 3rd round again Ali has his back to the ropes. Liston is coming with momentum. He cocks his right, stops it again, throws a love tap to the body instead. In general Liston wasn't a body puncher. In this fight, he threw an extraordinary number of body punches, all of them ' pulled' so they didn't crumple Ali. Why so many body shots? They're easier to conceal in terms of 'holding' them, they leave the impression that Liston is doing something, and more body shots means less head shots are necessary and less chance of accidently landing a hard shot to the head. In the 'blinded' round, notice that Liston fails to land a good head shot the entire 3 minutes on a man that later said he saw only faint shadows. Notice also that Liston threw many body shots that round. He had to land something or the crowd would have known, so he landed a bunch of 'held' body shots. Normally a guy tries to take your head off if he has that chance, but Liston focused on the body. Watch the last 45 seconds of the last round. Liston isn't being pressured by Ali, he doesn't have to throw punches necessarily. He does throw 6 punches, 5 jabs and one left hook. All of his last 6 punches were thrown with his left. The bell rings, within seconds Liston quits on his stool. He claims his left shoulder is severely injured and too painful to continue, yet he just threw 6 unnecessary punches with his left in the last 45 seconds of the last round. Giving up the title sitting on his stool is the last thing any fighter wants to have happen. Why did he use his badly injured left 6 times before the last bell when he didn't have to? Because he wasn't thinking, he forgot that he was about to quit and blame his left shoulder. Doing everything right in a fixed fight isn't necessarily easy. The left shoulder injury was fake. One of his cornermen that night admitted it was fake many years later. He said he didn't want to die with it on his conscience, so he admitted the shoulder injury was a lie. The FBI filed a report in which they concluded the fight was fixed. The report was sealed and just opened about 10 years ago by an FOIA request made by the Washington Post. There are other things. I researched to share with others who doubted me. A die-hard Ali fan doesn't see it and doesn't want to see it. I understand their denial, but the truth is the truth.
