Idk what the big hubbub is over Marciano. Dude retired young and undefeated 49 and 0. Chavez was 89 and 0 before his first loss. Marciano would have lost if he kept fighting. Don't get me wrong, it's a great record but he wasn't the "best Mr unstoppable ".
@skippythealien9627 Жыл бұрын
@@craigridley7369 there's two reasons why people overhype Marciano. One, because he's white. Two, because he was a heavyweight Cesar Chavez was an absolute unstoppable beast in his prime. He only started losing because he just couldn't stop boxing and age catches up to us all. But b/c he was not a heavyweight and not white, he never got his credit just look at Tyson Fury. I love the guy and think he's a fantastic fighter, but all the comment sections about him are filled with white losers who are angry that they are virgins stuck in their mom's basements getting fat b/c they don't do any real exercise or eat healthy...and they blame black people for all their problems

@@skippythealien9627 yeah I agree to a great deal. I often wonder if the mafia didn't pay some of the guys to take a dive. You know they loved having an Italian guy with that undefeated record. But again Marciano was a good fighter but doesn't mean the mob didn't help.

@76WestSports4 жыл бұрын
It is hard for people to overcome that trauma. Remember, Holmes did not win a gold medal like Ali, Frazier, and Foreman. After losing to Bobick in the Olympic trials, he was labeled a quitter and a dog. Big people in the boxing industry stopped him from getting sponsors like Gil Clancy. Al Braverman and Paddy Flood were trying to get him bumped off early in his career. Then you throw how the president supported Cooney along with television, and Madison AVE. Holmes family was racially harassed because of the Cooney fight. An old lady told him she wish he would die because he defeated Ali. Ali speaks out against the Vietnam war and he becomes a legend. Holmes speaks out against apartheid and no one cares. Holmes gives up a 12 round belt for a 15 round belt and is slated to unify with Gerrie Coetzee. Instead we blame Holmes for not defending against Greg Page. When McGuire (sic) was on the path to break Maris's record, the Maris family supported him. Pete Marciano didn't support Holmes tying his brothers record.

This is the rant of a man who was offended by years of being the second man, first to Ali and then to Rocky. Holmes, as a quiet soul (for the most part) just wanted what anyone, who would have been fighting professionally, wanted, RESPECT. leo powers I would agree with that post, if not for the candor so long about which belt was the 'true' belt of the HC. Many stated to be the champ, you had to beat the champ... well the champ was Ali and he beat him good. He acquired the most significant belts of his time and was stripped because of politics, let's be honest. After winning the HC, his only focus was chasing dollars, which returns the conversation back to R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Unifying the belts, getting Rocky's record, none of these achievements would have acquired Holmes the recognition he was seeking, for he was the villain whom ended 'our' great champions reign, ALI. He was hardly ever forgiven for that.

+leo powers The heavyweight division outside of Larry Holmes holding the WBC was a circus. Larry Holmes was recognized as the lineal heavyweight champion by fans, critics, and most importantly, by the Ring Magazine. I remember Mike Weaver holding the WBA title back then. I liked Mike Weaver a lot, but he was definitely not considered an equal champion to Larry. Weaver was a tough opponent against Larry, even knocked him down during their match, but Larry knocked Weaver out. Overall, the WBA heavyweight title was a 2nd. rate championship belt back then.

By this point, you're looking at a very bitter man and not unjustifiably so. He says some dumb shit here, but he just went 15 rounds that night and lost his belt. No one ever seemed to want to speak out on his behalf, so he sometimes went overboard in his need to remind everyone how good he was. I am a fan of Rocky Marciano.... but I back Larry on this. Peter was rooting against him. That was disrespectful. Rocky would have publicly supported Larry's effort to break his record. Larry was lashing out not just at Peter here though, but at a history of disrespect. Thankfully history has been kinder to Larry and now he has the respect as an all time great. Hopefully Larry sees that, even if he feels his place in history should be higher. That's just the ego of a champion. Rocky had it and so does Larry. They would connect on that, especially with Rocky 25 years removed from competition. Also both fighters would understand not getting their just due. Both fighters were heavily criticized. Rocky perhaps more so than any heavyweight in history. Yes Larry got out of line with the jockstrap quip. But given the context one could understand why he said it. Larry's point was: "Hey you can criticize Rocky too." It's too bad it all went down like this and hopefully both sides mended the fences.

James Brice IS that why he is close friends with virtually everyone he fought, even Gerry Cooney whose team and even himself engaged in a racist prefight buildup? Is that why Larry is very cordial with his fans? Is that why he was perhaps the only boxing champion who personally visited his own forum to offer his remarks to people he did not know? Larry was badmouthed by Peter Marciano Sr before Larry badmouthed him. That was classless of Peter to so publicly root against Larry and so loudly cheer his loss to Spinks when Rocky would have offered his unequivocal support of Larry's effort to make history. Holmes is a loser? Okay I refuse to waste further time on an intellectual midget such as yourself. What have you done with your life other than troll youtube videos of a fighter you claim to hate?

***** So true! I really believe that some of these clowns are just kids who weren't even born yet when Holmes was fighting. They have to be revisionists, because in reality, the guy sucked! And, as you know, I'm not saying it because he was black, I'm saying it because he really did suck! He was an obnoxious, brooding, unlikeable, cheap imitation of Ali, and he was a tasteless, classless, ignoramus! The guy fought all bums, and had trouble with many of them. Blacks get upset, because he didn't reach Rocky's 49-0 record, so they bad-mouth Rocky for it. As I said in an earlier post; Holmes is the only stiff, in history, who has the distinction of losing to the light heavyweight champ; who moved up to hvywt to fight the hvywy champ for the title. Contrast that to what Rocky did to Archie Moore, and that Michael Spinks was NO ARCHIE MOORE! A real heavyweight champ would've destroyed Spinks, like Tyson did, but Holmes couldn't even win a decision over him. That bum fought a lackluster fight and lost to the light heavy weight champ, lol! That alone should tell you how much the guy sucked! The situation was almost identical to Rocky's. Holmes , at 48-0 was defending his undefeated record and his hvywt title against the lt hvywt champ, just like Rocky at that point in his career. Except Rocky crowned the slick, hard-hitting, legendary lt hvywt champ, of his era, and Larry lost to... Michael Spinks?! Yes, Spinks, in a lousy, lackluster fight! Come to think of it, NONE of Holmes fights were spectacular! I could hardly watch them, they were dull, and Holmes was a dullard! It wasn't just the fact that Holmes couldn't beat the lt hvywt champ, Spinks, look at him in another comparison vs Ali; as a young champ fighting the old champ. Look at what Louis did to the ex-champs he fought, what Marciano did to Louis, what Tyson did to him (Holmes), and then recall how young champ Holmes couldn't even get a defenseless, washed up, shell of Muhammed Ali out of there! He tore after Ali with everything he had from the first round on, trying to make a point, but the point never came. It actually took Angelo Dundee to stop Ali in the 10th, not that bum Holmes! They bad-mouth Rocky for his stoppage of Louis; saying Louis was a shell of his former self, but at least Louis could still punch; as time doesn't rob a puncher of his big punch, and Louis had an 8 fight winning streak within the year of fighting Rocky, as opposed to Ali having a 2 year layoff before Holmes. There was NO comparison, Ali had absolutely NOTHING, yet the guy couldn't put him down, much less knock him out!! I'll never forget when Holmes was champ and was being interviewed for the Shavers fight. Shavers was sitting right next to him when Cosell asked Holmes if he was worried about Shavers 57 knockouts. Holmes told Cosell that he could "exorb the punches, Howard". Then Holmes said; "yeah, he knocked out 57 fighters, but who'd he ever fight?". Shavers quickly responded; "the same guys YOU fought, Larry!". Holmes really showed his ignorance, stealing the "who'd he ever fight" line right out of Ali's book. The huge difference, of course, was that Ali really did fight everyone...and Holmes fought bums! He just happened to be the bum who was better than the rest of all the bums of his time, that's all. He SUCKED! The fact is, that Holmes cannot compare to Rocky Marciano, as heavyweight champ, in any size, shape, or form!

Larry Holmes is definitely a top 10 heavyweight; arguably a top 5. His problem was that at this point he was just way too used to winning, and didn't really know what defeat was like. Unfortunately, Holmes came across as arrogant and extremely bitter after Spinks beat him. I think he kind of needed a loss at this point. And he learned a valuable lesson. In recent years, Holmes owned up to his mistake and says he's put it behind him, so props to him!
@DIRTKNAPFX9 ай бұрын
Top 5 easily. Holmes in his mid to late 20's was a tall order for anyone in any era. When a guy well past his prime, still can take Holyfield, Mercer the distance, I can only imagine, what he would have done in his prime. Chin, endurance, hand speed, punch output. when you can get up from arguably the hardest punch I have ever seen, Holmes vs Shavers, and then win the fight...that is saying something. skill for skill, I have Ali at 1, Holmes at 2. but, that is just me.
