9 turns connecting the rod to the ground, a 3pf capacitor that connects the number 6 loop to the positive of the sma, 1mm wire.

Actually it looks like good construction. The coil is composed of a winding that corresponds to the desired frequency. Looks well insulated from the shielding.

I Stumble Upon This Video Again And I See A Lot of Errors, You Should Take Out The Copper Part And Mesure It, Mesure Everytthing And Show It, That Would Be PROPER Disasembly Video :) Maybe I Should Do It On My Frequency Wattcchers Channel

It might have been more useful if you had extracted a Cct diagram with turns, tap & connections to the SMA. Not easy from the screen with it rotating in your fingers and not fully clear of silicone. Value of ceramic cap...etc?

it would be good to attach a good high pass filter to the antenna itself, to prevent the saturation of the radio frontend.

There was no need to damage the entire antenna, just take out where the antenna's working range has been written, there appears below the inscription a place where you can pick up the nose pliers and pull the antenna out of it

The earlier version of the Baofeng UV-5R had a different stock antenna. It was hard which tapered gradually towards the top. The disadvantage of this hard antenna was that it had a tendency to break when attached with the belt clip and hung on the hip. The one in the video is like a whip antenna that has the flexibility and around half-an-a-inch taller than the hard antenna. All latest UV-5R comes with this flexi antenna. Just wanted to know if this antenna performs better than the hard one with regards to range? Thank you for this video!

thats a great question. the earlier uv5r models had a dummy load antenna(the hard rubber duck antenna). the new uv5r models have a "high gain" antenna. The one in the video that he is dissecting is the high gain antenna. With the build quality of the baofeng brand radios, i doubt the antenna is "high gain", but i do know it is better with transmitting and receiving than the old dummy load antenna.

Hi Shandy Brandy: I can only speak as I find. I own five Baofeng UV-5R radios (shared around home, car, boat, and hiking!). My first two radios came with the “hard”, slightly shorter, rubber duck antenna; the later three radios were supplied with the slightly longer and more flexible antenna. Both types of antenna work very well for me and there is no discernible difference between using either the hard or flexible antennas. The “hard” antenna is definitely NOT a dummy load antenna! I get good distances around my home town using either of the stock rubber ducks with local repeaters (both VHF and UHF), typically 10 - 20 miles distant. When on elevated ground (average 1200 ft asl) in my local national park I easily reach repeaters 60 - 70 miles distant with the stock antennas. I have tested longer Nagoya 701 and 771 antennas and found no advantage on VHF, and they are worse on UHF than the stock antennas. This is real-world use, and I can only advise my own results. I have found that hoiking around a 14-inch Nagoya not only looks silly, but defeats the object of a compact handie talkie. Of the two stock antennas, I prefer the more flexible antenna for obvious reasons. All I can suggest is do your own tests and not be fooled into thinking that “longer is best”. Other experienced local fellow Hams who use their radios in a similar manner report similar results. Hope this helps. Iain.

@Peter Hu Thanks for that, Peter. Always interesting to hear other operators' experiences. Overall, I still go with the stock antenna (preferably the slightly longer, bendier one) which at least has the advantage of me looking less nerdy!

What is the pourpouse of capacitor? It is possible to remove capacitor and connect directly to the center connector and leave the ground isolated? What happen if i do that?
