Received a so-called Nagoya 771 the other day which I ordered from Amazon. Package was a clear wrap with only a sticker identifying it as Nagoya. Antenna tip was mangled and part of the antenna above the base was a little melted. Scan code was smudged. Immediately sent it back. Thank goodness for the Amazon return policy. Cannot say I am disappointed in the Nagoya 771, because this may have been a fake. Could not accurately check out the SWR, but I was not going to keep it anyway. Appreciate your efforts to spread the word about fake name brand antennas. Thanks for sharing.

Ordered 4 of these from china and they cost around $9 in total. I was a bit conserned at first but if they end up being fake and perform better than these original Baofeng UV-5R antennae what I have now, it's a win in my books. After watching this it might be that they actually might get proper signal afterall. Great video, really helped to set my mind at ease after watching this. I might buy one locally from a radio-store ($25) here in Finland and do some testing on me own to see if there is any other difference than the high price.

Making a good working antenna wouldn't be difficult, and I don't imagine the TIDRadio TD-771 would be a poor performer. This is a new hobby for me, but I've yet to come across a radio exchange. Amazing. New hobbies are always a bit tough to break into, so after screwing in my new antenna and hitting scan, I haven't found any broadcasts, but I'll keep trying. Strangely, many hamsters are getting great results from Abbree antennas. They're cheap and they're efficient. Plus, you can put one in your trunk and if you get in trouble somewhere where you can't cell phone coverage, you can unfold it and try to raise emergency rescue teams. You also can schedule contacts with family and friends in the wilderness. Just unfold the antennas, screw them in and you can stay in touch. It's amazing the technology to versatility ratio, and Baofeng is a Godsend to people who want to get into a new hobby. 🔹🌞🌛✨

I ordered several "Nagoya" antennas last year. Two were definite counterfeits (the genuine ones are never orange) but oddly enough, one of the genuine counterfeits performed best overall on the antenna tester. On both bands. Whether it will hold up over time is something else, since many "rubberized" antennas crumble in 5-10 years. Even OEM ones.

I don't quite understand this "performance" test...wouldn't an over the air test have been better? Or maybe a measurement of radiated power? I think a low SWR doesn't necessarily mean it is a good antenna. A dummy load would likely show 1:1, but that wouldn't make it a good antenna...just saying.
@TheSmokinApe

There older Nagoya Antennas 144/430 MHZ instead of UHF/MHF. They had a slight design flaw leaving a gap between some of the radios or they failed to connect they tried useing a washer to fix that problem. The Blue Print is hard to read on black and it tends to fade away over the course of age you don't want to use the wrong Antenna it can short out the radio . So they switched to Silver Print makeing it easier to read. So there's no mistake in identifying the old Antennas from the new the new ones have Green packageing instead of Orange. Nobody is going to waste there time copying a $15 Antenna.

Does a Nagoya tri-band antenna work well on a dual-band radio? And which is a better antenna, the NA-771 or the NA-24J, transmitting and receiving being the only criteria for judging? This is the problem with many many Chinese made products. As soon as one company lands on something popular there will be multiple other factories pumping out and selling clones. Sometimes they're just as good, sometimes they're worse, hell sometimes they're even better but it's gamble. is the nagoya na-771 fully fits the uv-5r? the advert in the na-771 is usually 144/430MHz, while the stock rubber antenna is 136-174/400-520MHz rated, and if you program the uv-5r it can reach up to 1000MHz right. so is the na-771 capable of that frequency? im new to this hobby btw
@TheSmokinApe

Welcome to the hobby Axelle. The Baofengs won’t go to 1000MHz they usually stop at 570MHz, also keep in mind they are only legal to use in the US by licensed amateurs on the amateur bands. No antenna will reliably cover all the frequencies so most folks do upgrade to something like a Nagoya and they generally report better performance on amateur frequencies 👍

How about testing these antennas for reception? I've found my stock rubber ducky MUCH better for picking up transmissions. A few nights ago there was a local net going on and I switched multiple times from a Nagoya 771 to the rubber ducky. The Nagoya BARELY picked up anything while the ducky did just fine. I have 2 other long antennas, a Bingfu and an obvious Nagoya knock-off and all of the performed the same, in other words, terribly.

@@TheSmokinApe Hi Ape, I'm talking about on the UV-5R. What I've noticed is that it doesn't even break the squelch even when set to the lowest setting. If it was overloading wouldn't the radio at least recognize that a signal was coming in? I have better radios that I've never felt the need to upgrade the antenna but I will try swapping these Nagoyas onto my KG-UV9P tonight during a net to see if they also suck on that radio. Never even thought about doing that. lol Thanks!

I could throw a 50-ohm resistor in the base of an antenna with some random element for the whip and it would show a near-perfect 1:1 SWR. Does that make it's "performance" as an antenna is excellent? It'll take an antenna that has good ears and optimized radiation pattern with a somewhat elevated SWR over a deaf/dumb low-SWR dummy-load any day.

@@TheSmokinApe I'm not sure, your video showed that, at least when it comes to SWR, a fake doesn't have to be bad. I'm kind of wanting to try the version from Diamond or Comet, I'm reading those reviews now. One problem I had with the Nagoya was screwing it onto the Baofengs sma connection, i could get a few turns but then it met resistance and was a bear to get off once I had it screwed on. Not sure if thats normal or not. It did it on my other Baofeng too. I might try a barrel connector to extent the Nagoya base up a bit but I don't think that was the cause of my performance issues. Good information for comparisons but I doubt your SWR readings are valid. The radio and the user make up the ground plane of a handheld so to accurately measure SWR you shouldn't remove the antenna from the handheld and the user needs to key the radio in a normal way. I have no idea how you would do the latter. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a "real" 771 and when doing a channel scan it preformed worse than the original antenna that came with my Baofeng BF F8HP. Any idea why? I think I'm going to send it back and get one of those folding tactical antenna like you reviewed.
@TheSmokinApe
@TheSmokinApe 3 жыл бұрын
What I will say is that the Baofeng radios have a lower quality Direct Conversion receiver, often called a "front end." Upgrading the antenna will cause the radio to "hear" better than it did with the stock antenna. With a Baofeng that can cause intermodulation or overload the front end causing degraded performance. Does that help?

I THINK mine might be fakes....I did the same test, same SWR meter, but using a UV82L radio. I have 4 x Nagoya 771 antenna's and the 4 stock ones that came with my 4 HT radio's.I tested them all, the stock antenna's all had over 3:1 SWR on both 144/70cm, the "Nagoya's" all had really high SWR (5+:1) aswell on the RS40. I switched to another meter that is digital, and all 4 of the Nagoya wannabe's had SWR of 19.9 or above. I refuse to believe the meter's are wrong, as they work perfectly on known GOOD antenna's. I just can believe I managed to buy 4 duds that are SO bad they should be taken to the edge of the world and tossed into oblivion. I know they work still, but I wonder how much range is being lost due to crap antenna's on low power radio's....I hate to think how high the SWR would be on my super tactical, none more tactical, camo painted 4 foot long folding tape measure antenna (with factory added 10 inch bendable metal riser on the bottom, so the SMA connector has enough weight on it for a rock solid connection)......talk about an idiotic thing to own.....
