This mother's grief is too much to watch. I cannot imagine.

It's hard to believe that TSS isn't already a mandatory requirement to be taught to teenage girls in all public schools.

I am a grown woman and I went back to wearing pads. Doesn’t matter if it seems like everyone’s using tampons, it’s not the only way to go. You do what’s best for you.

We had a girl in the ER. That her Tampon inserted to far and actually lost the string. It didn’t expand like they’re suppose to. She had to go into surgery to have it removed. She was only 13! So much pain when she came in. I felt so bad for her!!

Add this to the list of why I won't use tampons. Just sticking something up there makes me feel uncomfortable. I rather deal with pads

I actually knew this girl back in middle school. She was such a nice girl and was shocked when I found out what happened. I hope they pass that law to teach prevention in schools. R.I.P

I'm 48 years old. I had TSS when I was about 13 years old. I was so sick. I vividly remember going to the hospital and having to try to get out of the car to walk inside the ER feeling so weak and my head pounding thinking I just wasn't going to make it. My fever was 104. I felt like I was going to die. It happened so fast.

Doctors brush off symptoms.... typical.

As a survivor of TSS in 2018, it's a living hell during it. I was supposed to die, my organs were shutting down and the doctor pried my eyes open. I got lucky. Prayers for you and your family

This is why I don’t wear tampons 🤷🏾‍♀️ It’s a 50/50 it’ll get stuck, and cause something to go wrong. I’ll stick to the pads, it’s not worth death.

Not only did she die...but she died on her birthday! She was just abt to turn 20. RIP

SHE Unfortunately lost a child which is sad, BUT her death is now HELPING others bringing awareness and SAVING LIVES.... We ask why did this happen? We never understand.. MADDY IS NOW SAVING THOUSANDS OF OTHERS... May She rest in peace.

I got this when I was 19. I would have died if my sister didnt have my landlord unlock my apartment door. This is such a dangerous thing. Prayers for this young woman's family. So heartbreaking.

Teach your daughters about TSS. I have a 12 year old daughter who started her period at 10. She was terrified of anyone knowing she started (boys at school, etc) and wanted to use tampons. I told her about TSS and that she can wait until she is much, much older to try a tampon.

No parent should ever go though this.

Back in the 80s I was taught this in Jr. High. My teacher took the leaflet out of the package (yes the warnings were there in the 80s) and read it to the class and explained toxic shock. She said it was rare and no one really took it seriously. However my Dad forbade my Mom to buy me tampons for this reason. At the time I thought he was being pretty invasive and putting his nose where it didn't belong. He was just a Daddy who loved his little girl and heard something he didn't really understand, but that scared him to death. He said "All I know is tampons cause it, and it happens really fast! Your just gone!" Thank you Daddy RIP no need to worry now.

I think this almost happened to me. I was at work and had a tampon (only for like an hour or two) and all the sudden I felt like I was gonna faint.. and I did for a moment and started throwing up. I was rushed in an ambulance. Luckily I got rid of the tampon at work as soon as I felt it. But still... Never again. Pads for now on. If you hate pads, Use a Menstrual cup made from silicone. It's safe and won't give you this. Plus I heard it helps with cramps too. update: oh nm the cups can cause it too. ughhhh sucks

This is why I don't use tampons this can happen quite often. Saw a girl was using a 100% organic cotton tampons and she got TSS and almost died.

Been scared of tampons all my life, never used them. TSS made me scared.

My sister barely survived this. We were teenagers back in the 80s and they didn't know what to do. She almost lost her hands. Her skin literally seemed to boil off her body. They told our Mom that she was not going to make it. I had never cried that hard before. Thankfully she survived, but with some major problems that she still deals with. Horrible. Please, please! Be so aware of your bodies gals!

First time i read about TSS was in a magazine, and it was before i started my period (around 13yrs old). The article was about a young girl who also died of TSS, and it scared the hell out of me. Luckily i had a mom and older sisters to educate me about this stuff. My school never educated the girls on TSS. I imagine there must be a lot of girls out there unaware of the potential dangers because they simply weren't informed enough, or they just simply forgot. And it sounds dumb to forget something like that, but after +10yrs of using tampons i can say that it can easily happen. My heart goes out to those who lost their daughters and sisters to TSS, and to those girls whose bodies have suffered because of it. Stay safe and educated, girls💛

I've taught my 15 year old about TSS, but I'm still paranoid that shes going to forget to change it or that she will put it off for a little too long assuming that she will be fine. I know shes responsible, but I feel like TSS is one of those things that young women think "it wont happen to me."

...Iwas 17 , homeless and just hooked up with a family that took me in 4 a while. After starting , I got extremely sick.... severe vomiting is what I remember . An older woman came in the bathroom and asked if I started and I said yes. She told me to remove my tampon. 15 minutes and I was getting better. If it wasn't 4 her I would be dead. You can not use a heavy flow tampon without a heavy flow. It can kill you

when my dad was in third grade my grandma got toxic shock & her heart stopped beating, they gave her cpr & she lived. but her personality completely changed afterwards. toxic shock is really sad

You don't hear much about it now, but back in the 80's there was a brand of tampon called Rely, I think, that was eventually taken off the market due to several cases of TSS in which some women died. They started noticing women were getting mysteriously sick and some dying. They finally figured out it was TSS from tampons. The Rely brand was a tampon that would greatly expand, allowing women more security from leaks and women tended to keep them in longer. In 1987, years after Rely was removed from the market, I woke in the middle of the night cramping and got up to go to the bathroom to change my tampon (I always used Playtex). I went back to bed and noticed the cramping was getting worse. At first I tried to ignore it thinking I would fall back asleep and the cramping would go away. I couldn't stand it any longer and went back to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet and begin to feel myself starting to pass out. My hearing and vision began to fade and I thought I've got to get to my roommate so she can take me to the hospital or call an ambulance. Suddenly, I heard a voice say "get it out." The frugal person I am thought "but I just put a clean one in, I don't want to waste it." The voice again forcefully said "get it out!!" I really believe it was God's Spirit or an angel. I was so weak, I flung the tampon onto the floor. Right away, I began to get better, the cramping died down, I could see and hear again. I went to bed but was afraid to go back to sleep. First thing in the morning I called my doctor and they said to come in right away. He tested me and said there was no staph, but I know TSS was starting. I didn't wear tampons for a long time after that. Once when I was married I forgot a tampon was in and after being with my husband had to go to the doctor to have it removed because it was lodged up in there and couldn't get it out.

I started to experience TSS within 30minutes of inserting a tampon! I have a neuro-muscular condition - most likely the tampon triggered an acute dystonic reaction. ⚠️ My deepest sympathy to Maddy's mom, friends, and loved ones; as well as to all loved ones of victims of TSS.

My cousin unfortunately passed away from this. She did so before I was born. My mom was with my aunt when it happened and it was all over the news. This is a heartbreaking situation.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your child, mother. This is one of the many reasons why I use pads. They're safer to use. Follow my advice, girls and women.

Moral lesson: Use pads not tampons. Put hot compress if it hurts.

I had a string break apart from a tampon and when I went to remove it, I thought I had already since the string was no longer there. I came so close to having TSS. After 4 days (gross, I know), I went into the ER because my feet were starting to go numb. Tampons can be be very dangerous and aren't worth the risks. I almost wish they would be outlawed...more education needs to be done.

My Mom was always super against tampons and taught me the same. So I only ever used tampons in times of desperation. I don't feel like it's healthy one bit. And this is proof. So sorry for her family....

I don’t use tampons when I’m on my period. I use pads, but I still use one when there’s no choice. As a woman, my mom taught me to use both, but she told me to use whatever makes me more comfortable and responsible. This is important to talk about and to not just girls, but boys too.

T.S.S. was very common and pronounced during the late 70's and early 80's. It scared the hell out of me, enough that I WOULD NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT USING TAMPONS 😱

Men, above all, need to be educated on this, so that we can spot it and save lives, as disgusting as it may sound.

I am 58 years old and had TSS in 1983 when I was 19. I had all the same symptoms. Was admitted in the hospital on a Monday and went in shock that night. I would have been dead in my bed if I didn't go. Praise God. He saved my life.

There was an outbreak of TSS in 1980. The cause was a new brand of tampon called Rely. The selling point of Rely was that it could be left in place longer.
