I have had my Poulan Pro 295 for 15 years and it has always started on the first pull. This is the first year it has given me trouble. My secret(My Grandpa taught me to always dump the gas out of small engines at the end of each day, so they won't sludge up the carbeurator). The big picture is gas is cheap. Hiring someone to perform maintenance every year or buying another is expensive.

Nice little tutorial, but my experience is that on most any saw you won't have stability in running until you have the idle speed in range, and once you have that the low and hi speed mixtures respond precisely and predictably. You were spinning those mixtures back and forth and the chain was spinning away on idle, letting way too much air past the throttle plate, killing low end response. Also these Poulans need a .030 spark plug gap for good hot starting.

I’m not an expert but I own a Poulan wood shark and I have narrowed down my problem to the spark plug causing a lot of problems. Hard starting and not running properly. The solution is I sandpapered the contacts of the spark plug to bare shiny metal and always keep a full tank of gas. I also turned the adjustment screws forward and backward but didn’t change the factory setting. Also I have to lock the throttle when starting as stated in the manual Starting procedure. You should try tunning my dad's Poulan 2000. It will idle but with a spinning chain, and as soon as you lower the RPMs any further to correct it the engine dies. Rebuilt the carb, replaced lines, everything! Yet no luck, i spent a whole afternoon playing with the mixture screws and almost burned the thing up. I've since given up on it and (for safety reasons) left it like it was before; you let off the acceleretor and it stalls.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE10 ай бұрын
I see, have you considered that there's in intake leak at the carb or insulator and that's why the idle speed is too fast?
@enzoperruccio10 ай бұрын
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE It's not that it idles too fast, I've compared it to other chainsaws of similar size and it sounds pretty on par. The problem is that you can't slow it down enough to prevent the chain from spinning, because if you turn the throttle stop past a certain point the engine will begin to struggle and die shortly after. So It's basically in this limbo where you can make it spin the chain and idle, or not spin the chain and die. Dad says it's been like this since day one, so who knows, maybe we're dealing with a deep and obscure factory defect.

I never forget the Stihl recommended procedure for the MS 460. Adjust idle to 3300. Lean out the L jet for max RPM, NTE 3,750. If it exceeds this value, reset idle and redo the L jet for maximum rpm. Then, richen up the L jet until .rPM is 2,500. Check H with tach NTE 13,000. I usually set mine at 12,600-12,800. The reason you richen up the L jet on the 460 is to make sure it is running rich at startup, unless you like to hear it pop and take your arm off. It will do this. I also use this same basic tuning procedure on any thumper. I like my wrist and shoulder, too.

Very informative. Thank you John Clarke.

poor idle can be as little as adjusting the 'L' screw and the 'H' screw is to adjust and smooth high speed mixture of fuel/air. I would have first back the 'L' screw about 1/4 or 1/2 turn counter-clockwise to richen the mixture and speed up the idle. Cleaning debris from the carb is a good move for general purposes...

Awesome video, well done! So if my chainsaw won't start, turn both screws all the way in then out 1 and 1/2 turns, and then only work with the hi screw? Do I need to adjust the low screw it all? What is the low screw for anyway?
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Well 1.5 turns out is a place to start. What I would do is turn both screws in and establish how many turns they were at first. Then you can try 1.5 turns. However most of the time your chainsaw won't start because it has sat a long time with gas in the tank. That almost guarantees that the carb will need to be cleaned, rebuilt or even replaced.

Quick question I have the Poulan Pro 295 Super Clean series. Replaced the metering gasket and top gasket. I did change the fuel line and filter. I turned low and high all the way in and backed off each 1 full turn. Saw will pop off but not run. I can suck the fuel out of tank with like and I have good spark. I have two of these and and have had zero issues with the 15ish years I’ve owned them. I’m guessing maybe replace carb?? Do you have any suggestions for me? Sorry not so short. lol Your video was great for helping me tune up the other one. Thank you

I really appreciate your time and effort in making this teaching video. I have a Poulan Pro Classic PP4218AV chainsaw that I had to replace the fuel line from the tank filter to the carb, It starts and idles very well. It cuts great and has power. But after about 8 minutes it looses power and shuts off and won't start until it cools a bit. I replaced the spark plug and gaped it to 30 thousands but it hasn't made a difference. It still shuts off when it gets warm. Never changed the factory carb settings. What can I do to prevent this shut down? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. I would probably adjust the carb for more fuel. Also I would consider replacing the fuel cap and carb just in case.

Air leaks from leaking seals affect the RPM on chainsaws or trimmers in this manner . Often small engine Techs are aware of this but feel compelled to screw around with the carb to passively force the equipment to be responsive . To properly eliminate any doubt of a seal leak one should always do a vac and pressure test on any chainsaw or trimmer . This is imperative as critical air to fuel ratios are essential …..This is the leading cause of 2 stroke failure on most small trimmers and chainsaws …… Quality of fuel and or mix the second …….Although ethanol often can and will play is role in equipment failures. This testing also can be helpful in finding leaks in impulse lines. intake boots. faulty compression release valves . mating surfaces that leak as a result of gasket failure just to name a few examples . I see this everyday as a Master Service Tech ……..And to be quite honest mostly on Cheap Husqvarna equipment sold in box stores as Husqvarna is the parent company for Poulan , Jonsered, Craftsman chainsaws, I truly could name even a few more examples as Husqvarna packages these Poulan curses in many different colors and brands sold in small box stores . But so I don't deviate away from my intended comment let me also make fellow viewers aware that carbs often fail not because of saw dust or dirt but tarnish caused by modern fuels breaking down . And the typical result is swollen neoprene ……...One might ask how or why ? Simplest answer is ethanol as it affects check valves that actually regulate the amount of fuel limited threw the idle mixture screws that often feed the venture creating the said vital air to fuel ratios mentioned earlier . Witch brings me to my closing statement in my comment ……..All ways check your carbs pressure as typically 7 psi is what is expected and no less than 5 psi is acceptable ….There are kits that can be purchased that contain pressure and vac pressure gauges or tools …….Blocking plates are often sold separate for sealing off exhaust ports and intakes ……..EMAC is the brand I recommend as its affordable and often comes with blocking plates as well as pressure and vac testing equipment included . But Husqvarna offers a fairly inexpensive version that will suffice for the average do it there selfer sold on amazon and or ebay . So keep this in mind if your serious about making proper repairs and excluding shade tree tactics from becoming the standard practice . OH and John M M in this video the chain continued to turn and cast because of sudden fluxuations in the mating surface of the seals lip to crankshaft as the fuel being supplied wasn't sufficiently carrying enough oil mixture to seal the contacting portions with adequate lubrication . This was likely a result of a faulty carb or hardned seals that were leaking causing a sudden increase and decrease in idle RPM . Poulan / Husqvarna makes there bearings with the seals press fitted over them for there cheaper saw lines knowing that failures are expected as often the mating surface of the bottom cap to the jug or cylinder deforms once the saws are warm . I Show this in videos on my channel .
@Ashroyer863 жыл бұрын
Isn't the L screw and air mixture screw? If so counterclockwise would actually allow less gas and more air, not more gas. Just read an article that a guy said less air will make a saw run leaner. That's how you know it's time to go.
