I have an Ariens 46" riding mower that I bought in 2016. I use the wash port after every use. The underside of the deck looks almost new with some of the paint missing of course.. I have never had to scrape the deck. I lift the discharge shoot and watch the mist and grass being discharged. There is always a pile of wet grass when I move the mower. All I can say is that the wash port on my mower works great.

Yeah the wash port definitely seems "gimmicky" to me. In with you on that, tilting the mower over and scraping it out, or just using your hand to scoop it out would be faster and more effective than messing with a wash port. MAYBE a wash port on a riding mower deck would be more effective, as cleaning them is a PITA! great video sir!

I have a Husqvarna 22" S-P with Honda engine & wash port. After connecting hose & starting engine & tieing the bail down I shut the fuel off. The time it takes to run out of gas is enough to clean the underdeck. As mentioned before this must be done after each mowing to get the results you want; easier said than done of course. that is my experience with wash ports. The shut-off valve is a Honda feature as we know & many mowers do not have one.

The wash port on my Jdeere works great especially if I have to mow wet grass. I pull it in the driveway connect the hose lower the deck all the way to the lowest setting turn on the water run the mower for 5 to 10 minutes. This will flush out the grass really thoroughly . At the end of season I use the zero turn to grind up and pick up dried dead leaves which acts as an abrasive to clean the under deck for next season .

The wash port may be fine for rinsing the underside immediately after use, but removing any buildup will require a scraper. I've never used the wash port on my mower as it was given an undercoat after purchase. Additionally, I use the discharge port as I've found mulching works most efficiently when the grass doesn't grow much.

My Toro Recycler has a washout port, but my experience has been almost the same as yours. I've tried it, but IMO its not worth the time. I don't use it now. It amazes me how people can neglect their lawn, then expect a push mower to be able to mulch tall grass. I once saw a forum discussion where someone was complaining that their mower wasn't able to bag knee-high grass that was in standing water.

I have a troy bilt mower with the water cleaner, I used it for about 5 times after mowing, and it had the spray no water leaking on deck and ran mower for 5 minutes. After water off and out of the mud, I kept noticing there was no difference, only until you put it on the side and manually scrape the deck witha scraper. The only reason I used the water cleaner is, instruction said to and this was the first mower that came with this feature. The water feature is a good idea but does not stop the mower when cutting tall crass. Plus your don't have to waste water, just turn it over opposite the gas tank and scrape it. It's quicker and you know that the mowed grass is off of the deck, I do this about every 3 mows, If you take care of your equipment, it is just a common thing to do, but does not stop the mower from cutting the grass. If grass is tall raise the mower up where it does not bog the engine and the after the first time lower the mower and cut again with mower set to lower on the wheels.

Definitely would rather scrape my mower deck than use the wash port. I've never seen any actual results from using a wash port. If you really want to keep the deck clean, scrape it off from time to time, and before you mow, spray the underside with WD40, especially if it's wet grass. The WD40 will help to keep wet grass from clumping up onto the deck while you mow. I also like to replace my air filter and spark plug every year or so, as well as sharpen the blade. The impact from any one of those being even a bit worn may be minimal, but it adds up. I still remember the first time Dad and I did a proper tune up on his lawn mower after years of never maintaining it. We started with putting a new blade on, and he wanted to run it out of gas before draining the oil, so I went and started cutting the grass with the maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of a tank of fuel it had, and I got through the whole front yard, and I think most of the back yard just by replacing the blade. It drastically improved performance and efficiency. Then we replaced the spark plug and air filter, and suddenly the engine that I was barely strong enough to start became pretty dang easy to start. Regular maintenance every year will definitely help to keep the mower performing well and cutting as best it can. Definitely worth doing all of that, even on your friends mower there, I think you'd see a bit of improvement from replacing that filter and spark plug as well.

My stuff pre-exists wash out ports but I wouldn't use one and frankly wouldn't expect it to do much if anything.I have one mower which runs fine even in heavy wet grass, but bogs down in heavy wet grass after some hours run time due to the float bowl screw. It's never clogged and there's never been anything visible, even when examined with an eye loupe. I scrape it before each use and I get about 2 hours use before power lessens. Every use for over 20 years. The problem started after use of gasohol (its own story). I figure some kind of fuel reaction occurs causing a kind of oxidation buildup narrowing the diameter of the feed hole. No problems with my other equipment with similar float bowl screws.

yes, alcohol in the gasoline, is definitely not going to help small engine, unfortunately I think that was sort of planned.
@brucecoleman7412
@brucecoleman7412 Жыл бұрын
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I worked in an auto shop for over 30 years. When they first put ethanol in the gas they had no idea what the long term effects would be. As it turned out, the ethanol ate up the nitrile rubber valve stem seals and other rubber parts. Prolonged exposure also corroded aluminum parts such as carburetors. The auto industry switched to viton valve stem seals and improved the composition of the other rubber parts to counter the effects of the ethanol once they realized ethanol wasn’t going away. We replaced a lot of valve stem seals under warranty in the’80s. Unfortunately, the small engine manufacturers weren’t so quick to follow. Not only that but cars don’t usually sit unused for 6 months at a time like lawn equipment does. The ethanol gas breaks down over time and no amount of fuel stabilizer will help. Aluminum carburetors corrode and jets clog. The gas companies are concerned only about cars and couldn’t give a rat’s behind about small engines. Now days they make their engines able to RUN on ethanol gas. The problem is that if the fuel system isn’t bone dry when stored the jets clog with broken down gas. By switching to plastic carburetors, you can usually get away just cleaning them and be back in business. I’ve seen aluminum float bowls and chambers completely destroyed by being stored with ethanol gas in them. I don’t think there was a plan from the beginning to sabotage small engines. The engines generally run fine with 10% ethanol but you just can’t store them for months without removing all of the ethanol fuel and running it until it quits. With most owners that generally doesn’t happen. Around here, you may think you have a few more weeks to mow then the weather changes suddenly and the mowers get forgotten until warm weather returns. There in lies the problem.

I wasn't aware, that there was an adjustment for "float" to help It seal. Best choice is to either find a new carb, or rebuild kit.
@Kitt96
@Kitt96 2 жыл бұрын
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE the float is attached to the needle. As the fuel enters the carburetor bowl the float rises and slowly seats the needle until the bowl is full. Sometimes if the float is bad (has a hole in it) or isn’t adjusted properly the needle will never fully seat and allow the carb to over flow. I think I may just replace it with the various problems it has.

Wash ports are a sales gimmick. Scraper and brush are far better, quicker and no fuel waste. Cut the grass 1/3 the height of the leaf blade each pass will stop any bogging down😎

I tried the wash port, it's junk. My lawn tends to be wet a lot because it floods. I just tip the mower over, and using a garden hose with a nozzle, it gets all the stuff off and wastes no gas.

I would not use it after each mowing, it’s easier to just scrape bottom of the deck. Now I would consider using the wash port after the last cut of the season followed by gasoline coating the deck as a rust preventive.

Id advise them like dont wait till the grass is long enough to cut, cut it regularly if you dont wanna deal with the tall grass, that simple And about the port, i dont use it at all, cuz i run the mower every single day for business, id rather maintain other crucial parts like carb, plug or etc to get it running better if i have time to play with the water port..
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын

@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 9 ай бұрын
no unfortunately not, the blade being dull was the main culprit that.. and they let the grass get too tall as well. Cleaning is best done manually, otherwise you;ll have to wash it each and every time after use.
