Where can you get the best po'boy in New Orleans? A po'boy is a traditional sandwich from Louisiana consisting of roast beef or fried seafood, always served on crispy, fluffy New Orleans French bread. Insider's Herrine Ro and Alana Yzola are exploring New Orleans in search of the best po'boy, with stops at Parkway Bakery & Tavern, Killer Po'Boys, Johnny's Po-Boys, Domilise's. They order the fried shrimp po'boy at each sandwich, and talk to chefs, owners, locals, and tourists to learn what makes a great po'boy and which spot serves the best one in the city.

Killer Po'Boys: 4:40
Johnny's Po-Boys: 7:06

Been going to Parkway for almost 70 years. The food is great - biggest change (for the better) over the years is the front counter and if you don't know what I mean, you didn't eat there when Henry Jr. and Jake ran the place! My Grandfather was a streetcar motorman during the '29 strike, Mr. Timothy helped feed my family. I truly appreciate what Jay and Justin have done to continue the tradition.

I grew up uptown so Domilises is very close to my heart, Killer poboys version is a whole new twist but it reminded me of a shrimp take on a Banh Mi, which I'm a huge fan of and that would definitely be something that would be right up my alley. With all that said, Parkway is absolutely my choice as the best all around. Absolutely overloaded with fresh shrimp. I'm not big on heavy batter and theirs is so perfect. I ride in the Krewe of Endymion parade, and several of us have a tradition now on the last Thursday before our parade, we load our floats in the morning and then head to Parkway around 1pm for lunch. It's a tradition we look forward to all year long, just as much as the parade itself.

Awesome video. I was a tag-along in New Orleans with my wife for four days one may have hen she was on a work trip. I walked around on my own and ate my way though the city every single day! Best food lovers city in America bar none! We ate poor boys all over the place and I had researched the best before we went. Had beef, oyster, soft shell crab, and shrimp pretty much every place we tried. Loved them all - there were no losers and no losing restaurants. When we go back (next March god willing) I’ll only order shrimp. In my humble opinion, it’s the best option no matter which place you go. Loved Domilieses. In the end, the best I had came from Verde Marte in the French quarter. I actually after there 3 times on that trip and it was 3 of the top 4 meals I had in town. Little hole in the wall that took me a while to find cause I kept walking past it. Absolute best sandwiches in town. Muffletta was the bomb too! Would get my sandwich and a beer for an early lunch and go to the south end of Jackson square to eat under the magnolia trees. Wow, such great food. Can’t stop thinking about that place. The other meal that was on my top 4 was the shrimp and grits at Desires Oyster bar - also in the French quarter. I wanted to lick the plate! I ate at least 6 places every day just to make sure I hit all the places I wanted to try. When we go back these are the two places that I can’t live without revisiting. New Orleans and Louisiana is in our prayers for the destruction Ida brought. Be safe and be well! America has your back.

Just a little Poor Boy trivia from a New Orleanian, Dong Phuong is the name of the fantastic Vietnamese bakery they spoke of, and the very first Poor Boy sandwiches were called French Fried Poor-Boys. I lived in New Orleans for 5 years, long before all the new-fangled, hipster restaurants moved in. For fine French-Creole dining you couldn't beat LeRuth's in Gretna across the river (since closed). But for po-boys, Domilise's wins hands down. Their sandwiches are divine. Frankly, I don''t recall beef po-boys being popular in New Orleans when I lived there. Never dined with anyone who ordered one. Maybe beef muffaleta (or muffuleta) sandwiches at Mother's, but not beef po-boys. I always ordered a shrimp po-boy or a shrimp-oyster combo po-boy at Domilise's. It's the restaurant I have missed the most since moving away from New Orleans. Domilise's. LeRuth's. The Camellia Grill. Just the best.

@@Renee_nf094e I wonder if the price of seafood has gone up so much, that the po-boy places have had to push beef sandwiches. When I lived in New Orleans shrimp was a dollar a pound in both Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish. I invited a friend for boiled shrimp dinner in 1970, had no idea how much I should get for 2 people. Guy selling shrimp on Napoleon Avenue told me I needed 5 pounds! Roast beef poboys are one of the most popular sandwiches but mostly to the local crowd. After you get your fill of the shrimp and oyster I would suggesting trying the roast beef. They are delicious.

I have lived in NOLA for most of my life and our favorite is Domilise’s. So traditional and so good from such a small place. In addition, both Domilise’s and Parkway use Leidenheimer’s bread so it is interesting that you felt there was a difference. (Although I did see a special that showed that Parkway may get some of its bread from Leidenheimer’s and another source equally)

Maybe it's more a Mississippi Gulf Coast thing, but y'all really should try fried oyster or fried catfish Po'boys. Po'boys made with leftover shrimp or crawfish from a boil are great, too- should you have any leftovers. I've also had fried mushroom Po'boys that are a-ma-zing.

I’ve learned from these “best of” videos theres always a few classic renditions but then they always include some lame gentrified hipster version
@brentpoikey1154
@brentpoikey1154 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think that adding your spin a classic means that's its lame or gentrified or hipster. Food is like music: Nearly everything is a riff on something from before. You don't have to abandon the previous thing, but you can embrace the new twist while still loving the old. It's all good man, it's how cultures grow.
@gunveersinghdhir6186
@gunveersinghdhir6186 3 жыл бұрын
Trust me these "lame" versions are usually the best. Most of these "classics" you eat now weren't always classics and start out as these gentrified versions as you said. There's nothing wrong with classics but there's nothing wrong with innovation too. Most foods you eat now are also these innovations. The "classic" New York Pizza isn't even actual pizza and you'd know that if you've had a classic Italian pizza that doesn't have mozzarella cheese but instead parmesan cheese added off the heat.
@EvilSmonker

Gentrification is the sign of a growing economy, which should also usually imply better food due to more demand for quality from the wealthy residents, but I agree hipsters are very annoying.

I challenge all to go to “Hooks Seafood” on Terry pkwy. I’ve been looking for a good shrimp po-boy since Katrina( and Danny/Clydes Napoleon fixed their building but went down on the food quality). Nicely toasted bread, shredded lettuce, tasty shrimp and garlic fries to boot. I refuse to buy a whole one again; too much! Now, I actually split a half with a friend. No I don’t work there, I’m from Nola and I know a good sandwich when I taste it. Uh, I’m so sick!😅
