The human mind is hardwired to avoid negative emotions and pursue positive emotions. When we were hunter gatherers, this was a matter of life and death. Time have changed but our brains haven’t.

And here it is…I have been looking at my insomnia (and more importantly, how to heal from insomnia) in terms of my faith. I had constantly been questioning my journey, asking “why is this happening” and “what am I to do about it” etc…all in relation to my faith. And this video hits the nail on the head. There is suffering in this life. It’s hard. And it’s unavoidable. So don’t try to avoid the suffering/pain/hardships etc…just embrace them and suffer well. And we can even begin to appreciate our sufferings, knowing they are perhaps for our transformation.

My only question is…what about love? Self-sacrificing love. If we did it to produce a feeling, then it wouldn’t be real love. Likewise if we were only trying to avoid a feeling. Maybe some things, or choices in life, have nothing to do with ourselves, but of someone else.

Hi Lauren! So so glad you’re finding so much that resonates here and you know, to me acts of love are things we do because…it does feel so nice… it’s to me where there’s no difference between being “selfish” and “altruistic”… when we do something that truly is an act of self love, then it’s also something that makes us want to share this feeling and we become altruistic, when we do something truly altruistic we also feel love, we feel nice ourselves… so in a way there’s no difference. A bit philosophical, but that’s how I think of jt!

HI Daniel, fantastic post. This is also a very interesting road to go down, one which can be overlooked when healing insomnia. I often feel there are a myriad of emotions that keep insomnia a present thing in your life that's rarely addressed. It's no surprise that people with sleep disorders often have complex anxiety issues - it's the chicken and the egg: is it the emotions (anxiety) that came first, or the insomnia? To me, this is a good explanation as to why. Anyway, great job, more please.

Leighton Carter Leighton! Thanks as always for the support and for sharing. This is the first episode of 5 or 6 in which we will put this model together, once we have I think a lot will become much more clear in terms of what’s causing what. Spoiler alert: Every emotion is the result of a thought. Next week - we will talk about exactly that!!

How do I dive right in with the feeling of fear of insomnia or a sleepless night? How do I embrace the wakefulness?

I’d say in a gentle way and with lots of kindness, especially for those times when we don’t dive in 😊
