Ann is a college professor from New York City who had been struggling with sleep for over 30 years and got great results using the cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) techniques I use in my online coaching course: insomniacoach.com/online/?ref...
In this episode, Ann describes how her sleep issues began, all the ways she tried to improve her sleep without success, and how she finally managed to get her sleep back on track. I think many people with chronic insomnia will recognize Ann’s struggles with sleep - and the good news is, of course, that since CBT-I techniques worked for Ann, it’s very likely they’ll work for you, too.

Whereas getting out of bed when I cannot sleep is not a problem for me, finding something to do in a semi-dark room is another matter. Is there anything that you can do that will not wake you up even more ? How can anything that wake you up further prepare you to go back to bed and sleep ? Is stimulus control not therefore self-defeating ? I get it why you should not stay in bed tossing and turning, but how is getting up any better when it is bound to wake you up ? I do stay in bed and try not to worry about being awaken. If I get up, I do so for just a brief moment before I return to bed.

Thanks for your comment, Frank! It doesn't really matter too much what you do when you get out of bed - I suggest choosing any activity that you find relaxing and enjoyable. You should only be getting out of bed during the night when you are awake and not feeling calm and sleepy. If you wake during the night (which is completely normal) but still feel calm, relaxed, and sleepy, there's no need to get out of bed. Since you only get out of bed when you feel too awake and alert for sleep, what you do when out of bed is unlikely to lead to you being "further awakened". Instead, any activities you do should help you relax and recognize when you feel sleepy enough to return to bed. I actually just recorded a related video on this subject here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9yoqM5o25qymWw.html I hope this helps!

You mentioned that reading published material on sleep is probably the best route to go. I'm not finding any mention of books on this page. Could you tell us what books are good to read to help with sleep issues. Thank you for a wonderful broadcast. This is helping me so much. Thank you.

That's a tough one since there are so many out there. In what ways are you struggling, and what are you looking for in a book? Perhaps with a bit more information I might be able to make some recommendations!
