the flat delivery always makes it hit harder. I can remember a coworker telling me "I cant tell if you are being sarcastic now or not." Shocked I explained "If I have to tell you it defeats the purpose of sarcasm. I think it relates to my autism and being annoying that people would mark sarcasm so clearly as to take one out of the moment.

All prophets are self proclaimed, unless someone was there with them and filmed the occasion when a god came down from heaven and spoke to a person. We have zero evidence for those 'real occasions' and just because someone wrote about prophets in a book from the Middle East (supposedly) doesn't mean that they didn't have an agenda to get people to think and believe a certain way. It is, and always has been about "One Mighty and Strong" in various forms throughout history. We make movies about and lionize these individuals. WE are the stupid ones who believe their lies. We must find our internal compass and live so as to cause no harm to others. We don't need prophets or church leaders to tell us right from wrong - it's obviously NOT working.

I think that it’s important to recognize and treat mental illnesses in criminals. However, even if we understand the illness and its effect on behavior, that does not diminish the atrocities committed by such individuals. As you eloquently put, “he was simply too dangerous.” Wonderful review as usual, thank you Dr. Grande.❤️

I suggested this video to Dr. Grande on his Patreon bc my Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) through High School, so I grew up hearing about this case, even saw several pictures of them together like at Prom or while dating etc. My Father's whole family knew and Loved Brenda very much, and knew her family very well. My uncle also knew and went to school with Robin Lafferty (one of the Brothers but not one of the 2 who committed the actual murder), but they weren't close friends or anything. I think most people in that area of Utah knew or knew of the Lafferty family, and before all this, they were respected as a big, successful LDS family. For years before this happened, both Ron and Dan seemed to be Faithful Family Men who seemed to love and be devoted to their wives and children, and had steady jobs, etc. I think a lot of this started when Dan "Fell in Love" with his 14 yr old stel-daughter who he had raised (puke I know!) along with the anti-government stuff. He had touched her inappropriately several times, and his First "Revelation from God" was that God told him to take her as a second wife and they were to live Polygamy now. Ron agreed, and wanted to live it also, so both their wives left them. They were trying to recruit their youngest brother to join them, but he would not bc Brenda would not agree to live Polygamy and spoke out against it. So they conveniently "had a vision" to kill her and her daughter, thus "freeing up" their youngest brother to follow them and their lifestyle. I'm not saying they weren't "crazy,"- but I don't believe they were Psychotic in the way the law defines it- knowing right from wrong, but I could be wrong about that. Maybe they partially believed their own revelation nonsense, but having grown up Mormon in Utah myself- my guess it it was more just an excuse to try to justify their actions, and they killed for the same reason a lot of killers do when it comes down to it- sex (indirectly, by wanting a clearer path to a Polygamist lifestyle), and revenge it seems. I just think there are things that make these two seem a little too cunning at times to be Psychotic- like even from prison, Ron Lafferty, years later, convinced a woman in Utah just through letters that her whole family needed to die, and so someone found her, her husband, and two of their kids dead in their home, they had overdosed on a drink laced with fentanyl and sleeping pills. And they found all the letters between her and Ron Lafferty, encouraging her to do this. The Strack family in Utah- SO disturbing, and it just makes me think he's a little too cunning in ways to be Psychotic. They clearly have Mental Health issues to be sure, but as you and Dr. Grande both said, in this case it doesn't really matter, bc the public needed to be protected, and they were far to dangerous to not keep locked up, Psychotic or not. Sorry for the MUCH too long comment/reply here, I just enjoyed and agreed with your comment, and thought I'd add my 2 cents, though I'm far from an expert!! ✌️💖

It’s indeed mind blowing that some people could think and act in this manner. @@bthomson Yes, I completely agree!! And I always find it sad when people use Religion or God as an excuse for such twisted or Evil behavior! What God would ever want that?? It's been strange to me, as I grew up Mormon (LDS), though am no longer practicing/active- but to see the number of Mormon people who have gone off the deep end and done some truly horrific crimes- Ted Bundy was Mormon for a time, and the Church even paid for his legal defense in Utah before it was known for sure if he was guilty or not, and his long time girlfriend was Mormon. My Dad was also in a ward (that's like the neighborhood you go to church with when you're Mormon, it's broken up into wards) with a man named Mark Hoffman and knew him well, who is infamous in Utah for bombing and killing several people, along with fraud and forgery. Josh and Susan Powell were Mormon if you remember that case- and let's not forget the Chad and Lori Daybell CRAZY FEST!! Plus several Mormon men have tried breaking off and going back to Polygamy over the years, and this is not the only time it's ended in Murder, the LaBaron family was a horrible murderous Polygamist family. I know people of all religions and backgrounds commit terrible crimes, but it feels like there's extra emphasis on the "I had a revelation from God" to do it with Mormon people who go off the rails. To be clear and fair, the Mormon Church and it's leadership would NEVER condone ANY of this type of behavior, and would call it what it is, Pure EVIL- but it sure makes you think. I think it must be just the teachings within LDS that all people, esp Men with the Priesthood, can receive personal revelation from God if they pray for it, and everyone is encouraged to do so when making ANY decisions in life. You can see how this could go wrong in a twisted mind I suppose. And there is an attitude of Men with the Priesthood have a direct connection to God or "The Spirit", like when giving blessings it's taught "The spirit" speaks THROUGH them, they are just a vessel during those times. I just think now those kinds of beliefs CAN become very dangerous, clearly, in the wrong hands. Joseph Smith used a lot of these tactics to start the religion in the first place, it's very sad. It's hard not to feel like a lot of the people I love are brainwashed- but these cases where people go off the rails "In the Name of God" are some of the worst, most Evil, and most Brutal- don't you think? I too wish there was some early warning signals- sometimes maybe there are and they aren't paid attention to enough, early on? ✌️💖

💖💖Yay!! Dr. Grande did my suggestion/question today!! 👍🥰Thank you SO SO much Dr. G, you did an excellent outline and analysis as ALWAYS, and this one hits closer to home for me a bit. My Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty through High School (then Brenda Wright) in the very tiny town of Kymberly Idaho. He told me of this sad story, and showed me several pictures of them together at Prom and a few dances, and just a few pictures while they were dating. She was incredibly beautiful, and my Dad said just about the kindest/sweetest person you'd ever meet. He wanted to marry her, but in the LDS religion it is expected that Every Man goes on a 2 year mission at age 19, so when my Dad went on his mission, it was just too long to wait and Brenda moved on. I know that always kind of haunted my Dad, the "what if". I am no longer active/practicing LDS, but I do still live in Utah, and over the years have seen things on this case from time to time. My Dad was also in the same ward and was the "Home Teacher" to Mark Hoffman at one time- a man who committed fraud, forgery, and murder by bombing people. That's another crazy, interesting, and disturbing case all on its own. It really does seem like Mormons can be really susceptible at times to very delusional thinking and at times extremism, I think bc people are taught from birth to believe in very seemingly impossible things and also personal revelation, and in a twisted mind that can go VERY wrong I guess! Although I MUST add that almost all the LDS people I know (which is a good chunk of my friends and family still) are just really good people, trying to live good lives like anyone else, and are very loving and always looking to help people- so this type of crazy is DEFINITELY the exception, not the norm. Not to mention both these men were ex-communicated at the time of this HORRIBLE crime- still, it's hard not to notice there have been many LDS people who become fanatical and establish off-shoots and do some just HORRIBLE things!! I think of that poor young, beautiful mother- so full of life, and her baby girl- who would've been just a couple years older than I am, brutally murdered like that, and it's just SO senseless and devistating! All because she told her husband and his brothers she did not and could not believe in or ever live Polygamy. So VERY tragic! Sorry for the much too long comment, but I was excited to see Dr. Grande do this one today that I had suggested, and he did SUCH a great job at summing up a pretty complex case with several different people and issues involved. As a side note, for those that don't know, the reason the Firing Squad is still an option in Utah for Death Penalty cases, and most inmates here choose it, is because of an LDS belief called "Blood Atonement"- that is that if you commit a GRAVE sin such as murder, your only hope of being forgiven is to shed actual blood when paying for the crime- lethal injection or other means don't accomplish this, so most men in Utah will choose Firing squad based on the belief that when they shed blood for what they did, they at least have a chance at forgiveness. Strange I know, thought some might find that interesting. Thank you SO much for doing this video Dr. Grande- you are a Legend, and my favorite, and I love you and everything you do!! 👍💖🤓💕🌵😘🥰🤗❤️

Shay B. Thanks for sharing that with us! I read this book when it first came out, because I am a big Jon Krakauer fan. I feel like I should read it again, because there was so much to it. God bless Brenda and her baby! I saw Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar Jones on an interview and DEJ said how much she wanted to shine Brenda's light. That so often we as a society are caught up on the killers, we lose the sense of the victims. So very true. Thanks, again.

@@reelfan-16 Thank you so much for your sweet comment! 💖 I love that DEJ said that bc it's so true- and my Dad's whole family knew Brenda and her whole family so well, they lived just down the street from each other. Even my Grandparents and aunts/Uncle would talk about how special Brenda was. She was truly a Beauty, and also had an incredible singing voice, and was either Miss Idaho or the first runner up- but also she volunteered at the Nursing Home in her community and did yard work for Elderly people who needed it, and many service projects for those on need etc. This was all during her Middle and High school years when my family knew her, but from what I've heard she continued this selfless kind attitude after she moved to Utah to Provo to go to BYU and after she got married etc. She was truly a beautiful person INSIDE as well as out, and really did shine brightly I think! I think the fact she DID shine so brightly and the fact she was kind and generous and sweet, but ALSO a strong more modern woman, put a target on her back unfortunately, to her husband's unhinged Brothers. And her beautiful, innocent, ANGEL Baby girl, it's just unthinkable!! They died about a year before I was born, so I never knew them personally of course, but Thank you for reminding that we should always remember the victims and their light as much or actually MORE than the twisted people who snuffed out that light so senselessly! @@cottontails9003 Thank you so much Cotton Tails- I've always just been horrified at the Beautiful, Innocent lives (Brenda as a young mother starting out that new chapter in her life, and Erica as a BEAUTIFUL, innocent, ANGEL Baby girl!) and BRIGHT lights that were snuffed out that horrible day so brutally and senselessly! It's good to shine a light on them and this case I think, as sickening as it is. It's sad how Religion can be a beautiful or wonderful thing, but also a dangerous thing in the wrong hands or when twisted by twisted minds. It always disturbs me when people use this as their excuse to do such horrific, unthinkable acts, and try to use religion or messages from God as justification, as if that could ever make sense! And the major reason they killed her was bc they were trying to talk their youngest brother, her husband, into joining them in living a Polygamist lifestyle, and Brenda said that after hours of careful introspection, SHE decided her husband having sex with multiple women was NOT something she really connected with or wanted. And they knew they couldn't get him to follow them if she wasn't on board bc he was really in love with her. I grew up Mormon, My ancestors were Mormon Polygamists, and I see it for what it was- an excuse for men to keep taking newer younger wives and sleeping with as many women as they wanted while framing it as "Moral" and "Building God's Kingdom". Gotta give it to the Mormons though, those men in the early days really found a way to turn womanizing and perversion and unquenchable horniness into a religious mandate that women were taught they needed to obey and endure for a short time on Earth to ensure an ETERNITY of rewards and joy in Heaven. Joseph Smith was a LOT of things, but seemingly not a dummy! Lol

@@shayb413 This is a great analysis of the rationale for polygamy! I have Mormon polygamy ancestors, too and always felt very ashamed of that. The Lafferty family was very highly regarded and it is possible that people gave them a pass when they needed to rein them in and get them help. It is kind of like expecting crossing the blue line in law enforcers or medical doctors turning in other doctors for offenses.

@@beeimaginative Oh I completely agree Catherine! It's definitely a "Have each other's back" type of culture, with the Men esp I think. Until it gets to the point where it is making them or the Mormon church look bad, and it's obvious and undeniable- like how both Ron and Dan Lafferty DID get Ex-communicated prior to the murders, but for example, I have personally known of both children being molested going and telling their Bishops, and in one case a man went in to tell his bishop he was sexually abusing his own 2 daughters, ages 11 and 13, both the cases I knew of were in my ward growing up, and both times the abuse wasn't reported to the authorities, bc the Man was in the Bishopric. They just quietly released him and put him in probation, but no police were involved until over a year later, when he got his now 12 yr old daughter pregnant- at that point, I guess it couldn't be hidden and he went to prison finally, but the Bishop had known those things had happened for over a year before that poor girl got pregnant by her own Father. I'm just saying- these are EXTREME examples and I hope it doesn't happen like this in most wards or often, but in this situation the Men definitely had each other's backs over protecting children and that's just sickening! I don't even hate the church or think it's all bad, although I am no longer active/practicing, and I think there are good things about it- but there is no denying things like this happen and it's just inexcusable really. I used to feel ashamed that I came from Polygamy in the early church also, but we aren't the ones doing that- so just be proud you are a smart and strong enough woman to realize how very not ok that all is, instead of trying to justify it like so many people I know do (even my own family). They say there weren't enough men to go around, and that this was the way God commanded at that time to build up his Kingdom, to build up Zion- but you and I should both feel proud we know that's all bull and we know better! I was the one who suggested this video on his Patreon, bc my Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) all through High School. He told me of this incredibly sad case when I was about 12 or 13, and showed me pictures of him and Brenda at Prom and just a few pics of them while they were dating. Brenda was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and my Dad and his family have all talked about how sweet and wonderful and kind and special she was. She was either Miss Idaho or first runner up, I can't remember, and was always doing service for the Elderly especially. You are so right this is sickening- a beautiful, wonderful young mother just starting out in that chapter of her life, and a beautiful, innocent, ANGEL Baby girl who both had their bright lights snuffed out so brutally and senselessly!! I agree completely with your description of 'sickening'. It certainly was and is!!

This was my video suggestion to Dr. Grande, as my Dad grew up with and Dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) through High School, and I live in Utah and grew up here. My uncle also knew Robin Lafferty and went to school with him. But you are correct, it definitely IS a chilling case isn't it? It's been strange to watch the first couple episodes for me, since I grew up LDS (no longer practicing) and have distant ties to the case and people involved, and grew up hearing so much about it. But chilling is DEFINITELY the right description sir!!

Oh, and the Zimbabwe UFO case is the most compelling UFO case/encounter I've EVER heard, on the basis it seems nearly impossible they all could've been making it up- I'm not like a huge conspiracy theorist, but that is a strange and intriguing UFO story FOR SURE, and I'd love to hear Dr. G's take on it also, as I know he usually is good at debunking things like that- but that one seems VERY unique as I'm sure you know!!

Hello Dr. Grande, I find it amazing how you can add humor to these cases, you are so funny. But "my" thoughts on this case are as follows. When people start to believe that God is telling them to commit crimes and they ARE the chosen ones by God are very deranged people. You mentioned it perfectly, he could never have been set free, he was too dangerous. You presented the video very well as always. Best Regards. ❤👍

@Pierre By that definition, then, the entire leadership of the Mormon Church, and all the members of the Mormon Church who believe the Book of Mormon is the Word of God are insane (or deranged as you put it), since deranged is just another way of saying “insane.” The Church teaches its members they are the Chosen ones of God. The Mormon Church teaches that all those who are born into the church are especially chosen for that mission by God, and are the “Elect” and Superior Children of God (they even call themselves “Saints” as is included in the name of the Church). And the Leadership of the Mormon Church is especially Chosen by God to lead. They are selected for being the most worthy, the most perfect, and the most Chosen of God. The white man (it is always a white male) leading the Mormon Church is said to commune with God, and his official title is “Prophet, Seer, and Revelator.”

@@KidsandKittens217 I understand what you are saying here, as I grew up devoutly Mormon from birth (I'm no longer active/practicing), but I believe the Original poster said that when people start thinking that God is communicating with them and telling them to commit CRIMES, they are very deranged. For one thing, whatever religion you are, it IS deranged if you think God is "telling you" to commit CRIMES or hurt or kill others. A loving God would never do this. I think there are many problems with the Mormon Church, but most my Family and friends and loved ones are still devout LDS/Mormon, and they are FAR from deranged or crazy- many of them are very successful in life, and very generous and giving and always looking to help others and just good people trying to live the best they can like everyone else- not at all deranged, insane, mentally ill, etc. But just my personal experience- being told you were chosen by God to be born into an LDS family and the religion and you have a special mission on Earth etc., only makes you feel small and unworthy and ashamed and like you can never measure up- especially given how strict and high-demand the religion is! At least that's how it made me feel, NEVER good enough, depressed, full of Shame, etc. You got a lot right on your comment here, were you ever Mormon? ✌️💖

You see this happen every once in a while in Utah that someone has mental breaks from reality and think they are the ONE MIGHT AND STRONG called to set the LDS Church and the government back in order. Truly sad, especially when they start committing murders.

RIGHT?? I grew up Mormon in Utah (I'm no longer active/practicing)- not sure if you did also, and I'm the one who suggested this video to Dr. Grande on his Patreon- I grew up hearing a lot about this particular case bc my Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) all through High School, him and his family all knew and Loved Brenda very much. But it's crazy how this type of thing seems to happen more with Mormon/LDS- much more commiting crime "In the Name of God" crazies for some reason. I think it's the emphasis on Personal revelation, as you're taught to seek personal revelation in every decision you make, and if you are Faithful and "worthy", God will "Talk to you" in a way, or give you revelation about what you need to or should do. I guess that mixed with the teaching that Men with the Priesthood have an even stronger connection and such an important role- the mixture of Ego and this belief in a twisted mind is certainly a dumpster fire waiting to happen. But maybe that's just my opinion? ✌️💖

Good points. Some people feel they need to go back to the early church prophets' teachings ( J.Smith, B.Young, John Taylor- ie journal of discourses, School of Phrophets) and they feel that the current LDS church is off track. Next, they feel inspired just like you mentioned and it can lead to some crazy and fanatical behaviors.

Yes. People with delusions can have moments of clarity. Had these professionals ever worked with people suffering from psychosis. It seems they were quite distanced from understanding manifestations of the disorder.

It proves there's little consensus in mental health. There's little consensus, because it's too subjective to be an actual science like medical care or math. Bachelor, masters and doctoral programs should only focus on the well established, well known, & repeatable. Thesis should help establish science in mental health, not subjectivity. I know mental health clinicians on the US government payroll that actually employ astrology in their practice. The fact they have so much leeway makes it a pseudoscience.

@@troy3456789 definitely not a pseudoscience. Everyone's brain is different, which is why its so "subjective" and up to the discretion of the mental health professional. The human brain is incredibly complex, which is why brain surgeons can study and train for 13-16 years. Psychologists are just on the other side of the coin and study how the brain behaves.

I read the book back when I was representing several of the children in the FLDS/YFZ Ranch case. It is a fascinating network of communities, with lots of very intelligent members and also many with chromosomal disorders. The insular nature of the community seems ripe for paranoia and conspiracy fears. I found that the children were well educated in some respects but had huge gaps in their vocabularies and knowledge of any social paradigms or historical events outside their community. And of course in their community, they do have a religion wherein people are said to have these religious experience and abilities and they seem to be granted more within their unique political structure than divinely ordained.

I think they give themselves away by not respecting patients boundaries. I had some issues with depression and anxiety as a teen. The psychiatrist who I was sent to was in his mid 40's. He demanded to know everything about my sex life 15 minutes into my first (and only) session. I refused to see him after that. Unfortunately there are some people in the psychiatric/psychology profession, who have less than altruistic motives. Watch out for inappropriate behaviour and disrespect of normal social boundaries.

The one I had - even though I didn’t use the exact term narcissist- presented in a pretty obvious manner, and that was extreme arrogance. Stuck up demeanor, lack of any real empathy for patients, inability to listen and preoccupation with talking about all his qualifications and how he was such a great subject matter expect during session. Also cute how he ended our sessions after about 35 minutes (they were supposed to be an hour), told me we “had plenty of time”, and then retired months later. Prick.

I suggested this case to Dr. Grande on his Patreon, bc I grew up hearing a lot about it, bc my Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) all through High School. My Dad and his whole family knew Brenda very well and loved her very much. I was raised Mormon in Utah (no longer active/practicing), but this is an interesting and convoluted case for sure!! The first 2 episodes of the series were ok, but my husband is a former Mormon also, grew up in it, and we were both like "This is ridiculous, this is NOT how Mormon/LDS people talk and interact in regular day-to-day life!" I guess they are trying to put an emphasis on how this is Faith based and teach people some LDS beliefs and background, but it's still very strange the way they talk, and esp when at work etc. You could work with 10 Mormons and you might never know they even were, unless there were a lot of drinking parties they were turning down, or maybe bc they didn't have a morning cup of coffee, but Mormons do believe in Separation of Church and State, so that part is weird to me. But it's an interesting case- many years later after this, Ron Lafferty even convinced a woman just through letters from prison that her whole family needed to commit suicide and die- and the Mom, Dad, and 2 of the 3 kids I think were found dead in their home- they had drank a drink laced with a lethal amount of fentanyl and sleeping pills. They found suicide notes from each member of the family including the kids, as well as the letters back and forth from Ron Lafferty in prison. The Strack family in Utah, VERY sad- so this man was super dangerous even behind bars apparently!! ✌️💖

@@shayb413 In Canada North of Utah. And JWs too. Many of whom would shut their lights off and barricade the doors on Halloween. My daughter had a classmate who had to hide under the bed, in the dark, with her Mom, on Halloween. We left about 20 years ago. We realized that we couldn't really tell people about the stuff that happened, cause once you escape, it doesn't seem like it could have been real. So weird it made you doubt your memories.

Except in this case, Brenda was killed mostly bc she WOULDN'T join/go along with the cult they were trying to start, most notably the practice of Polygamy they wanted to implement. She said NO WAY and they wanted their younger Brother to join them, and saw her as a threat to the cult they were forming, and so they had a "revelation" to kill her. There is also the Manson Family that killed outsiders, random people. But often times, this is VERY true!! ✌️💖

I think it is a valid thread to tug on. Parenting has tapped into this for some time as every parent knows when their kid falls into the wrong crowd. Could even tie to the policy of not letting felons associate. Personally it offends me as it is a clear violation of the constitution but I understand the motivation. Could also be something like the bystander effect at work and aspects of social psychology. I think it is very valid as many crimes are of opportunity , and opportunity can be very dependent on who you are around. Not even counting how personallties can interact and synergize.

Seeing the photos of Ron and Dan in this video were chilling to say the least. I met these two a month before they murdered their niece and her mother. There's a lot leading up to that moment that goes back to my high school days, but it wasn't until I was 23 when I first met them. My best friend in high school had an older brother who we looked at as overly religious. I learned after the fact that he was involved with the School of the Prophets. He was named in the book Under The Banner of Heaven towards the end. Shortly after high school I heard that a girl who was friends with my buddies brother had gotten married. When I asked about her getting married her brother acted strange and told me it wasn't a real marriage but some religious arrangement to a guy named Ron. You could tell he wasn't happy about it so I stopped asking. I lost touch with those people and a couple years later in 1984 I received a call from my father, he had been admitted to the State Mental Hospital in Provo and couldn't leave unless a family member checked him out and brought him back. He knew I liked motorcycles and called me saying he wanted to go meet a guy he knew selling one if I could come get him. I was thinking maybe I could do something normal with my dad so I checked him out. We met these two bearded brothers at a house in south east Provo and the two of them instantly started talking religious stuff with my father and I was annoyed that there wasn't a motorcycle. My father was talking to Ron and Dan started telling me religious stuff that I had zero interest in. I had to get my dad back so we didn't stay long. After the murders I received a call from police and I told them about about the meeting and they contacted my father. He always wanted to be a polygamist and I'm guessing that was the reason he wanted to meet those guys but that was basically the end of it. Even though I come from a very large Mormon family and most of my siblings are still involved it never made sense to me. I'm the only brother out of 7 who chose not to serve a mission and 1 of my 10 sisters served one as well. Yes my mother had 17 kids with my father and they basically got divorced over religion. I've seen some weird things in the name of religion so I don't want any part of it.

I read the book when I heard about this series and it was both very interesting and extremely disturbing. There was a bit of background on the polygamy movement, how to LDS church and doctrine started, and it helped explain why the brothers turned out the way they did. The author said something like it was hard to determine if he was mentally capable, because of the religious aspect of the case. The argument was if they declared him mentally incapable, then what would it say about the rest of the religious population that prayed, talked to God, and etc. Ron had sound reasoning and believed what he did was right, even if the rest of the world disagreed. He pleaded not guilty, while admitting to the crimes.

I agree the series is strange- I grew up Mormon in Utah (I'm no longer active/practicing), and this series is strange to me because for one thing, this isn't how LDS/Mormon people talk and act just in regular normal life. There is a Mormon undertone culture in Provo, Utah, yes- and someone may mention something about Church every now and then- but out in the world, at school and jobs, and even just normal communication with your family, it is NOT like the show. Every other line seems like some Mormon concept or line that only VERY active Mormons would even understand completely (I do, since I grew up in it)- but it's strange and not how people interact normally which gives it a false feel to me, or way over-dramatized in some ways that don't need to be, and perhaps under in ways that deserve more attention. It's only 2 episodes in, and my guess is they are trying to establish heavily the 'Faith based' angle as that does have a big part in the story, but the way they are doing it is making the characters seem strange and unrelatable to most people I'm guessing. My husband made me turn it off- he also grew up Mormon but no longer practicing- and he said it's WAY too much and that's NOT how LDS people talk and interact, seems so artificial, it was driving him nuts. So I agree with you 💯 on this!! 💖

@@seppyq3672 Thank you for agreeing with me on this!! ❤️ My husband now refuses to even watch it bc he says it just makes every person in it including Brenda sound like a crazy person, and it's probably confusing to anyone who isn't or was never Mormon- every other line is about "Building Zion" or a lot of other much less common talked about Mormon concepts they act like are just used in everyday life. It's almost laughable bc of it. I looked it up bc I thought FOR SURE that whoever was making and producing this was never Mormon, and just did research on the beliefs and that was how they IMAGINED it would be- to my surprise it was 2 former Mormons who grew up in it- I couldn't believe that bc like we both know, this is rediculously inaccurate- Mormons are actually just pretty normal people for the most part, trying to live good lives- most the people I love most dearly in this world, my friends and family, are still devoutly Mormon. My Mom is extremely religious LDS, and she opened a school that teaches ESL to Adults from all around the world, and she has culture days where they all teach each other about their different cultures and customs and Religions, and my Mom loves everyone of every religion and respects their beliefs and wants to learn about them always, so this is just a bit far off from your average LDS person for sure! Not to say there isn't an undertone or certain culture, but it isn't like THAT. Thanks for your comment, so I don't feel crazy or like maybe it was just US who thought this was weird in this show!! @@seppyq3672 Absolutely, that makes total sense! That would've been much better! I'm sure the Lafferty Brothers were talking that way all the time and even MUCH stranger by a certain point- all crazy anti-government and Revelations from God seemed to be constant themes in their break off twisted belief system. Since I grew up hearing so much about this case and my Dad knew Brenda so well, I will probably keep watching, and hopefully it will get better in that regard. I just keep thinking everyone out there watching must think all Mormons live and talk so strangely- and they make such a big deal of the one detective NOT being Mormon and the other main Detective being Mormon, so he interacts with the husband and suspects all about Being Mormon and what does he believe and why did he lose his Faith etc., for most of the interrogation. I HIGHLY doubt that happened, and I don't think that would be professional or appropriate at all, to come across as judging people for their beliefs or lack of as a police detective, hopefully they get better with this as the show progresses. Are you still active LDS? Or are you now a Heathen sinner like me?? (Lol, I'm still a good person, no Heathen Sinning, just thought I'd try to be a bit funny!)

It's hard to imagine that there are people this twisted and deluded in the world. Way too many people imagine they are "prophets." I've often wondered if they really believe it or just want others to believe it. If the judge would have been correct in his assessment that there was nothing wrong with him, it would have made the guy pure evil, because at that point, what else is left? It sounds as if the two brothers escaped from one cult and entered into another, only this one was far darker than the first. I think the problem is that too many people either think or want to believe they are special with God. More than likely they are narcissistic in nature to begin with. What some religious fanatics do is read a scripture in the Bible and then claim they had a prophetic dream or vision and weave a convoluted story around it and claim it's a prophecy coming straight from God. Some deceivers even write books about their fake prophecies and then peddle them to the gullible and naive.They take delight in the reverence and adulation they receive.The attention strokes their massive egos while feeling superior to their cult-like followers who look up to them in awe. It's another way to control. Fortunately, most of these delusional self-appointed prophets don't resort to murder. Your humor regarding the "voice and hand minus a brain" was priceless. lol

There are many problems with the background and beliefs of LDS but one of the worse is the idea that anyone can be a prophet...others in that same belief systems assume that the person should be listened to and they are given great power over others for doing nothing more than claiming prophet status.

I agree with all your thoughts here 💯%, and I was raised strictly Mormon in Utah (no longer active/practicing), and I was also the one who suggested this video to Dr. Grande on his Patreon bc I grew up hearing a lot about this case bc my Dad grew up with and dated Brenda Lafferty (then Brenda Wright) all through High School, and my Dad and his whole family knew Brenda well and Loved her very much. I think more than "Anyone can be a Prophet", it's more accurate to say that that in the LDS religion you are taught that anyone can receive Personal Revelation from God, and you are encouraged to do this daily and every time you make a decision. And yes, men with the Priesthood ARE taught they are special and have an even stronger connection to God and "The Spirit" and revelation. Add Narcissism and a twisted mind to that belief system, and you can see how it could go off the rails REAL FAST! My PERSONAL belief, having MUCH experience with this Religion though, is that most these men KNOW they are lying, and they KNOW they aren't getting actual Revelations from God, but they ALSO KNOW that people will believe what they say and follow them if they SAY they are. I've heard a LOT of people say "Well I'm not a visionary, I don't get these revelations- but we're taught it happens often, so if this Man says he had a Revelation, he must be extra close to Good, and I believe him." Things like that. This is how Chad Daybell gained a following. STILL many people in that group that knew him believe STRONGLY that he was a "Visionary Man" and a type of Prophetic Leader or had a very "special gift", but NOW they just believe the temptation was too much having all that power, and he was led astray by Satan, and couldn't tell the good messages or spirits talking to him from the bad ones, etc. NO- he made it all up for attention and whatever following or power he could get, like the rest of these Men. That's what I believe anyway, but maybe some ARE actually deluded enough to be "drinking their own kool-aid", but I doubt it. Just lying and manipulation disguised as "In the Name of God". Just my 2 cents, but I'm no expert! Enjoyed your thought provoking comment!! ✌️💖

The more I analyze religion in general the more I can see how Power corrupts. I can also see how a man in that faith might feel intimidated or the need to pretend or even imagine that they see visions and dream dreams. It's because they don't want to be the odd man out. The only one who's honest enough to admit their lack of vision because it would make them feel inferior to the rest. Or even worse, to admit that God's spirit might not be with them. Power corrupts! It's not just the Mormons. Evangelicals are famous for this. Many seem to imagine they are "Prophets of the Lord". One delusional man on the net even wanted to copyright his ridiculous vision. It had something to do with a bull relieving itself in the middle of a football stadium. lol This is how crazy their so called visions can get. I've never been involved with either religion but I know first hand how religious cults operate. They use high control to control their members. They are stricter than most mainstream religions. In the case of the Mormon Church their members cannot consume tea, coffee, or alcohol. Anything that is considered a stimulant. How is that Biblical? Where in the Bible does it say one can't drink coffee or tea? The Bible even says that "a little wine" is good for stomach issues but all things in "moderation." Jesus even turned water into wine, that says it all. I'm a believer in spite of religion, not because of it:-)

@@shayb413 The original "prophet" who found the tablets etc. and founded the Mormon religion was the one who began the entire scam so he could indulge his own wants. Joseph Smith made it all up just like Daybell and all of the people between them. The Smithsonian did a deep investigation of the "history" written in early Mormon literature decades ago and could not find any facts to back it up. If people want to believe it they will but if they look into the history they might see that the root of the "church" is built on fantasy

Dr. Grande, please consider profiling the case of my cousin, Judith Brown. She disappeared in 1977 with Richard E. Reisenberg who had killed his wife and daughter in 1971. Both have never been found. Her case was recently profiled in episode 342 of The Vanished Podcast. It’s probably one of the coldest cases out there. Thank you for your consideration.
