😱😱😱 I created this nursing heart design & this girl has been selling it on Etsy for years as her own work. It’s still up right now!! And I still have the original post from 2014 where I created it.

It's funny because you can totally tell when there is a tutorial on something and I see people in my art group posting something they have done without saying I got this from such and such tutorial, but usually someone will say - isn't that so and so's tutorial. I always say (because to be honest I'm still at the doing tutorial's stage for lettering and painting) got this from - insert name here's - tutorial. They deserve the shout out. Looking forward to the day when I can post something that is totally mine :-).

Yuuuup!!!!! Pretty much agree with everything you said. Although one thing to mention is that as everything is inspired by something that came before If you copy an artist from the 1800s, but there’s a living artist who also paints in that style. You don’t need to give them a shout out. I feel like some artists of today are sooo protective of work, work that’s been inspired by the old masters. I mean Van Gogh copied the Japanese. Monet was inspired by Turner. Nobody really owns a style of art, nobody owns a subject. copyright protection is tricky, unless the person is copy pasting your art. It’s really difficult to enforce. I feel like there’s so much art in my head, that I don’t even have enough time to create all the art I want to, let alone wasting time copying someone else.

My personal rule of thumb is that when I’m copying to learn I do not share it at all. I keep it to myself. I’d only share with crediting if I first had the permission of the artist who inspired me. Well, unless it was an artist who offers tutorials...I’d share and credit in that situation. But an artist who just posts their work...I’d get permission. I’m not 100% sure that crediting without permission (or implied permission as in tutorials) is legal.

Having characters that have a similar hairstyle, hair color, clothes or personalities isn’t copying. Most people just think of the same thing.

Thank you for that I just finished your last course and I’ve been playing around looking for my own style . I have the basics down but I’m drawn to so many other styles that I have to calm my mind down and study these techniques until I feel comfortable to break out my own stuff . You have explained it so well. I'm not an artist. I'm learning little bit of calligraphy and acrylic painting now from youtube and pinterest. It really calms me when I paint. Im in learning stage and I watch KZfaq tutorial on paining and copy the exact thing. But when I post on my insta I make sure that I give credit to that person. I feel obliged to do that. This video was great. 👍

OMGGGG I'm soooo glad you made this video. About "10-ish" years ago, I became officially disabled from my normal job and/or way of life, but I've 💯 ALWAYS been a "crafty person" in a lottt of different categories. {I'm totally not trying to brag, lol, but it's just the truth... Some people are and some people just aren't} anyhoozie, I'm also #ADHD so I HAVE to be doing/creating SOMETHING ... So once I was kinda physically not able to just run out and about all day like a lot of people do, I started watching KZfaq videos to get different ideas, etc.... Well I've kinda found a circle of creaters who have actually all become real friends, if only online and I have as well! But then you know how social media or whatever works, they'll occasionally slip in a totally different and new person into your notifications or whatever, which is fine, but since I DO watch the same 15-20 or so people, I pretty much KNOW who's ideas actually belong to if it's one of my favorites. And if I can watch someone make something {like a VERY SPECIFIC BOW in this instance lol} and I'm talking very specific and original, where she actually even gave it A NAME! So when I see someone (especially a "newby") make this bow like down to the very thing that makes this technique "specific and original" to this person and they totally make it, even DESCRIBE IT the same way, but NEVER give her credit, omg it just burns me up. Lol. And I'm just the kind of person who will totally call you out on it. I may not be ugly or mean about it, but I will DEFINITELY say something to where they will KNOW that I am on to them to where they basically have no choice but give credit where credit is due! And it's TOTALLY DIFFERENT, in my opinion, if you are or aren't actually ONLINE, MAKING VIDEOS! If it's something you are just doing for your own home decor or whatever, copy away. Lol. But it's a WHOLE OTHER BALL GAME when you are sharing it online for everyone to see! ANYWAY, lol, sorry for the novel 📖 lol, I was just so happy that someone who IS on KZfaq and makes videos to say it. I follow quite a few people who have the same style of decorating as I do and I really don't wanna be known as the "copying nazi" lol so THANK YOU! I just hope the right people actually watch it.... For some reason a lot of people don't recognise that posting their practice art on their social media account is publishing it. That counts just as if you hung it on the wall at The Louvre with your name next to it. Practice art is only ever exempt when it is purely for learning & nothing else ie not published or shared with others.

Hi HEAC! For those who may not know “how to give the shout out” you may want to share how to do that. For example on FB or Instagram how exactly you can give your shout out so you’re crediting the source or where you copied from....just a thought.

Yes it is copyrighted the moment you create it however if someone steals your stuff and you want to fight it or take to court it must be registered.

Although crediting an artist is certainly better than not crediting them, with social media being the way it is, sometimes copies will get more traffic than the originals which doesn’t really help the original artist much. Artists also have different perspectives on this: some are fine with people posting copies, but others are not, and their wishes should be respected.

let me share this not art related, but maybe it helps with the copy and inspiration dilemma, I was always cooking with my mom, so I inherited the recipes not the written ones but the ones she cooked for us, she is no longer with us and one day my nephew asked if I could teach him how to cook one dish she used to cook for him when he was a kid so I did. He started cooking that dish with me, till one day he did it alone and asked me to try it, see if you like it, I tasted it and it was different, good same base but it had some different seasoned, I said this is not the same flavor, he said I know I used some of the herbs we have outside and gave it another flavor, I got upset and angry he ruined my mother's recipe. Then I got to think, that is how recipes are born, from one person's inspiration someone else adds their flavor and they change. We can't get stuck doint the same thing otherwise we would never have anything new... Let me give you another one with a story I heard you guessed it cooking, a woman was cooking a roast beef and she would cut the two ends of the meat, her husband asked why do you do that? she said I don't know, my mom does it, she got on the phone and asked her mom and her mom said I don't know my mom always did that. So she decided to call grandma and asked grandma why do you always cut the ends of the roast beef and why mom does it too I ended up doing it, she said I know why I do it, I don't know why you or your mom do it, I did it because your grandpa bought me a pan that was too small for the meat to fit so I cut those pieces to make it fit. That is copy vs inspiration. No one said let me see what happens if you don't cut the pieces and they didn't question it till someone asked why... If we copy without adding our own flavor or style we would never know what will come up, it would be awful or something new might come about.

I find myself stuck in a situation... people ask me to paint something they saw online. I do the painting for them but do not post it because I feel bad that it's something I didn't create. Any tips on what to tell people if she ask to make something.. i usually say I can use this as in inspiration but I will not copy the same colors, etc, do you suggest anything else..?

I had an idea for a villain I was making. I wanted them to have a design where they looked like a black skeleton, and had green electric, almost radioactive looking flames covering their body. I also wanted their outfit to be a well tailored suit. And i wanted them to be a business type man that was like a crime or lord or something along those lines. Then one day when I was in English class, one of the words we learned for vocabulary was “blight” which basically meant something that completely destroys or damages something. And I thought “perfect! That’s what I’ll call him”. A few months later I started watching Batman Beyond the Animated Series, and fuck me the main villain was a dude named Blight who was a corrupt business man whose ability was that his skin turned into radioactive green skin that allowed you to see his skeleton which was black. The only difference between the two was that he didn’t have green flames coming off him, and his outfit was almost always tattered up. It sucks cuz the character I made was meant to be the main villain of the story.

I’m usually inspired by things on the wall.

My friend said I was wrong for copying a drawing. I didn't post it anywhere or anything it was just on my desk when she came over. I felt horrible and like I'd broken some rule I didn't know existed because like she's an artist, I don't think I am I just draw for fun sometimes so she would know what's right and wrong

How do you prove that it's your work? Time and date stamp? Can that be altered by others? This is tricky.

Put off all social media, pick up your pen and paper and start scribbling for a long time. Experiment and dear to make faults and weird stuff. Doing this gives me my best ideas. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also my most freakiest 😂

In writing stealing is okay as long as you don't get caught or in other words if you take "inspiration" from somewhere but if what your writing ends up looking like a crappy shameless rip off of something else then you've obviously something wrong.
