In this video I talk about how we actually go about training our ear and how a small shift in attitude to intonation can take you very far.
Join me on Paganini’s Secret, the shortcut to left hand violin technique with unique specific exercises to accelerate your progress, personal guidance and personal feedback lessons with me. This is the method I learnt from the great Ruggiero Ricci and it is now available at Violin Lounge Academy:

This is a very insightful video. It was just last night that I realized I have been playing a passage of double stops incorrectly in a piece that I recently performed. I felt quite upset thinking I’ve been playing it incorrectly for all this time and I likely performed it this way. But like you have said this is in fact a very good thing because my ear has developed and now I have the opportunity to play it correctly from now on.

Great! This is exactly what you want. If it is of any help, I have exactly that experience (including the upset) every time I watch one of my videos while editing. It is easyer for us to listen carefully when we are not playing which is why recording/filming ones playing and analysing it is often not fun but such a valuable part of practicing.

Great video. Are you going to do any more videos that explicitly demonstrate what you learned from Ricci?

Thank you! Yes, definately. All the videos on Paganini's secret and in fact most videos on left hand technique are Ricci's method and I am no where near finished yet.🙂

How do you think recording figures into this?

Maybe because im a beginner. But especially when playing C# and F /#F im not confident and know when it is in tune or not. I find that i developed a fear of these notes. And that causes me to tense up when playing these notes and than i need to work on relaxing again. The fear can start stopping me doing certain exercises getting through. Also, i do intonation work as a warm up . U do it at the end of playing as well? But i constantly go back and check notes with doublestop drone if something sound out of tune.

Some notes or double stops are much harder to hear than others. C# and F# are harder to hear than G or D. There are accoustic reasons for that. I know how uncomfortable it is when something is hard to hear but try to go about it with curiosity and keep working on making those notes sound s good as you can, even if you find them hard to hear. Ear training takes time.
