In this episode I review the Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition for virtual tours, comparing it to its closest rivals, the Ricoh Theta Z1 and Trisio Lite 2. While portable 360 cameras like the ONE RS contain other features, this review will concentrate on features used for real estate virtual tours in real-world situations, including not just quality, but workflow as well. Below are links to the results and other info mentioned in the video:

I got the 1 Inch just after launch as I finally felt happy enough with the image quality and the promise of Matterport capability got me over the line. It certainly does seem like the better option of those in it's class. Really quite impressed with what the PureShot does for a feature that requires 0 post time in a workflow context. I reeeeally wish they had've been able to get the MP compatibility out much sooner though, I've been waiting to cut the giant Matterport camera out of my kit as it will mean being able to fit photo, video and virtual tour kit all in one camera backpack for me.

I've really been enjoying your channel and learning a lot. Thanks so much for all your tutorials. A quick question if I may. Considering the types of images you can create with the Insta360, would you still use a full frame camera and create the image in PtGui, or use the Insta360?

Hi Nathan I follow you regularly and intact have your virtual tour book as well. My question to you is that I already have the Ricoh Z1. Do you recommend me keeping that or sell it to get the Insta360?

There's a lot I like about the Z1 and I still have two of them that I use on shoots. Granted, I do the RAW blending method I talked about in the video, which is similar to the Insta360...maybe another video comparing those results? The workflow is longer in some cases, yet shorter in others. I do though like the exchangeable battery of the Insta360 as well. The more I type, the more I think I should make another video comparing some of the differences...but honestly, I'm not sure if you'd gain much if you're used to working with the Z1 already.

A very good review! Sounds complicated to work with the separate DNG files and stitching them manually like in the old days which made me give up on 360 photography with multiple GoPro's or DSLR's. But maybe not that complicated with the current software out there. It's nice to have an option to shoot footage in 360 and immediately using it with a light editting probably. I think I will go for the Instat360 ONE RS because of the purple fringing it does not seem to have compared to the Theta Z1 (which is unacceptable looking at the higher price Theta charges and Insta360 does not).

Great content by the way. Do you think agents would hire me just to come in to do 360 work and not the photography? I have a camera but I do not know if they wouldn't hire me since I am an amateur. Or should I try to get clients for both? Do you think the virtual tour model can get me money?

Nice Review! I just purchased the RS 1 inch for interior videos and shots in smaller (mobile/manufactured) homes; which is my channel's niche. I have read some of your books on real estate photography and they were very helpful in getting started. You mention something you would use to remove the tripod from the mirror in one of the bathroom shots. This is often a problem for me. What do you use/how is this done?

Nathan, the Z1 just recently had a firmware update and can not shoot AEB automatically with up to 9 exposures and can save images as dng files. Would be great to see you do an update on the Z1 and compare this to the Dual Fisheye plug in and the Insta 360 RS one inch.
@NathanCoolPhoto
@NathanCoolPhoto Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that firmware update, but I never used AEB on the Z1, and instead use the workflow I outline in my virtual tour guide, which uses the DNG files from the Z1, which they've provided since initial release. For the price though, and given the quality and simplicity, the Insta360 ONE RS still standouts out, especially given the bracketing and workflow. I don't know if you have my guide to virtual tour photography, but here's a link if you'd like to check that out: amzn.to/3ygnDuY

Thank you for that awesome video ! You helped me a lot for my choice 😃 I have a question, right now I would probably go for Insta 360 One RS and I will use it with the software Ricoh 360 Tours. I want professionnel easy and fast results with just one software that also offers unlimited tours in pricing choices. Would you recommend me any other software than this one ? (Matterport is too expensive and not unlimited) Ricoh also uses AI many features it seems great !

Is the RS compatible with the Matterport software? It seems matterport has a grasp on a large portion of this market and not sure wether i would go for a camera that doesn’t allow for it? Would love to hear your thoughts! Great vid as always

They are working with Matterport now and expect to be fully integrated in the next few weeks. Their initial deadline was the end of September, and when I reached out to them a couple weeks ago they had pushed that to the first week of October, so I'd give it a few more weeks. But yet, it is supposed to be compatible with Matterport, soon.

Hi Nathan, Great information. I purchased the One RS for architectural photography. It's worked fine for about 15 shoots. Last week it produced these arched blackish banding lines on the DNG images. The merged DNG eliminated them; so I had to edit the merged instead of working with the individual DNGS. Have you ever run into this? Tech Support has not been helpful. BTW I have updated the firmware. I wish I could send you a jpg example.

Thanks Nathan. I just recently purchased the One RS-1 and was having second thoughts about choosing it over the Z1. I had the same issue the USB port, but it wasn't much of a concern. I feel better about the purchase now that you made a video on this topic. I just have to learn how to hand blend the DNG files, see if I can do a better job than the HDR programming. Do you by chance have a recommendation as to which site I should use to host the tour? I was leaning towards Cloud Pano, but I haven't made up my mind. Thanks 🙏🏽

Nathan. Hi I too was very very interested in your blending technique. I’ll be looking at reading your book very carefully. I’m curious though, what are the results of stacking bracketed images from the Z1? I wonder if the Insta360 or the Z1 came up as the champion using your stacking method. Thx.
@NathanCoolPhoto
@NathanCoolPhoto Жыл бұрын
RAW files are pretty much similar across these cameras, but as I pointed out in the video the Leica lenses help with CA on the Insta. Also, you can more easily shoot a quick 9-shot bracket on the Insta, where the Z1 you have to do each shot manually. I think a comparison video of blending is a great idea though and I put it on my todo list.

@@NathanCoolPhoto I've been able to hand blend my exposure to get a better looking result than in camera HDR blend. However, the issue I come across is when my hand blended equirectangular images are uploaded to a hosting site and you can see a line where it has been stitched together. From what I've read, the issue comes from making Basic adjustments in Lightroom / Photoshop. The software treats the pixels at the outside edge individually, not part as a whole scene / 360 picture. So, I guess I'm just stuck with the in camera HDR blend or a visible stitch line. Either way, not eager to submit either version to a paying client. I've seen other videos where their demonstration has a version of Insta360 Studio that offers Stitching calibration, however the version I have does not offer that option.
@NathanCoolPhoto
@NathanCoolPhoto Жыл бұрын
That's just a common stitching error from hand blending, but it's easy to fix, and you can test it for free using Marzipano. All you need to do is make sure you apply equal amounts of editing to each end, and/or fix using cube faces with PTGui (where it dissects the pano into 6 squares that are easier to edit). Perhaps a tutorial on that?

@NathanCoolPhoto
@NathanCoolPhoto Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome. That is something I might do in the future, but when it comes down to it, the ONE RS is miles above the X3. That camera has sensors that are half the size of the ONE RS, so image quality will be much lower on the X3. And no matter what, the Trisio will be lower quality than the ONE RS (due to its small sensor) but Trisio does have price savings, yet limited features. If you can spring the extra money, I'd recommend giving the ONE RS a try, and if you have too many problems with it, then return it and try the Trisio. Here's a link, btw, if you get tempted to grab a ONE RS: amzn.to/3CsmulE

You're very welcome. After exporting you shouldn't need to revisit the images again in Insta Studio, but if you do, you could close the program and restart it, which I found worked when I was doing my initial testing.

Nice review. I have the Zeta and recently got the insta360. The 360 Low light is not good. Very noisy. The 360 support is laughable. I had an outdoor shoot and was testing the 6K video and it overheated and I could never get it to power up. It wasnt even a warm day. But for virtual shooting it did not overheat. Matterport does not support the 360 which is a shame becuase matterport is still the best deliverable option to clients. What platform do you use with the insta360 camera when you deliver to clients? Thanks again for making the review

@@NathanCoolPhoto Hello! Matterport support has appeared, but the quality inside the tour leaves much to be desired ((the pictures are terrible, there is a lot of noise, and you can’t set up the camera for the matterport. I don't see anything about Beta mode, but the quality issue you're seeing with Matterport will be the same for any portable 360 camera (i.e. Theta Z1, as well as the Insta360) since it's all automatic with no edit capability. If you want high-quality tours then you're safest bet is to do them yourself so that you can edit them, which I show how with workflows for the Insta360, Z1, and others to get high quality results in amzn.to/3JTxe1I
