I really want the theta x Bbbbut the lack of raw really breaks the deal in an otherwise perfect cam. Your vids have inspired me to get into 360 photography professionally. I use to be all dlsr photography years ago and fell out of it due to rising costs. This newer tech has really inspired me to return to photography and maybe help me find a livelihood I can enjoy. So thank you for top tier content I have watched many of your videos after discovering your channel just a few days ago.

The correct answer for me is… both. I’m currently using the Z1 and love the reactions I get from clients when I submit the virtual tours. It’s a nice intrinsic reward. However, I like the idea of the rapid work flow for small ball projects. Basically, I look at it like this: a real estate tour is the same price per square foot regardless the capture equipment I’m using. The $800 cost of the X is more of an investment because in the time I’d save in post, I can lock down and shoot 1-3 MORE jobs, theoretically. The workflow makes me money and saves the time intensive work for high end and/or commercial clients. Granted, I don’t get a ton of $5k jobs, but being able to have the time to market and meet could net me a lot more income off a relatively small investment in the right tool for the right job. Well made video and glad to see you back posting regularly.

Hello Mr.Ben i have watched your videos for years and i bought the first Theta Z1 .But sadly to say i was out on a shoot and my Z1 fell over you know the rest. What can i do send it somewhere for the glass to to get fixed. Or am i really out of luck when this happened to you were you able get it fixed ? I'm Horrified

For video and single-shot photos I use Insta360. For serious landscape photography I like Sony with a fisheye. I even have a rail for left eye and right eye VR180 photos. There's extremely little information about 3D 360 with a mirrorless + fisheye. I would think left eye and right eye 90 degrees apart, but the parallax is way harder than 2D 360 or VR180.

The capture video doesn't have GPS data when I upload a video on Street View on Z1. Any recommendation to solve this issue? I'm using latest firmware and app. I am using Iphone SE2

Hi Ben, I have a MiSphere cam, it is a nice budget and I can use it for small projects but it have a painful workflow to extract good images from. My question is: do you know what happened to Madv or MiSphere product? It was discontinued? Tks for the great videos, excelent contribution for 360 world of photography!

Hi Ben, I'm looking for a 360 camera who can give the GPS metadata to the photo without the use of any other device, can you confirm the Z1 and/or the X can do this ? They promised me that the INSTA 360X4 could do it, but that is not the case. (I'll return it within a week) Thanks for answering.

Hello Ben, thanks again for your point of view, always a pleasure. My question before placing my order is which camera would you suggest to be a all-in-one starter camera for point and shoot and virtual tours. I'll be going somewhere where I'm sure its unpopular and I'd like to start a virtual tour business but also would like to do social media and inside and outside videos of the place where I'll be. After watching many of your videos I've rounded it down to Insta 360 RS, X2 or the Theta X. Please share your opinion, it would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have a SC2 as I am really a newbie. For a future I would like to do an upgrade in order to take more detailed and better quality photos. What would you recommend for landscape photography? I guess that working with multi bracketing wouldn't be a good idea as outside tend to move so I'd need a quick exposure. Theta X then?

Just got the Theta Z1. Installed the plugings and then realise that dual fisheye remote is NOT for IOS. Only for Android. SO does that means that the best solution is the AE backet in camera? Or there is another way to use the dual fisheye plugin or dual fisheye raw from Iphone? thank you

I shoot with the x for the faster workflow. What I haven't been able to figure out is how to batch edit in a nadir. Any suggestions?

Fastest way would be in the actual virtual tour software, just batch adding it to all photos 👍

Hi Ben, Thanks so much for doing this video. I'm after the better quality so thinking Z1 so wanted to ask - despite the smaller screen, can you adjust the settings using only the camera or do you have to use a phone app to use the Z1 and if yes - the phone app is a must, then will it work with an iPhone and an iPhone 6 at that? I'm starting to find that I can't install some apps on my phone because the iPhone 6 is unable to install iOS 13 and all subsequent iOS versions and those particular apps require iOS 13. A new iPhone is a big expense I am trying to postpone. Many thanks :)

Hi Ben Thanks for fine video again. I use the Z1 and the biggest problem for me is the "CA" and and it smash the windows line. I was happy to see the exat same issue in you video. I thing the usb cable position is much better on Z1 when use power bank I tape the cable tight in to the monopod. But the CA problem is realy a pain and the smach windows lines. I just made and tour on big fishing boat with 92 360 photo and it was a nightmare on the bridge with many windows all the way arround. Next time I will use DSLR when there is many windows. I think at the end it will be faster and much better result. Thanks and regards from Morten

@@BenClaremont Yes but the window frame are often smashed in the lines/edges It also is in you video. There the X looks much better. I dont understand why Ricoh dont the best off all and put it in one 360 cam. Make a more proff. camera I wood glad pay much more to get the best result and speed up the Workflow. Thank you for reply

Hey Ben, How do you create the 360 comparison pictures? I will sometimes shoot for construction companies that want exact before and after photos of a scene. I’m having an issue trying to overlay them or match them up correctly and make it look nice. So how do you do the postprocessing image comparison?

Hi Kevin, Following and would love to know also for same reason. For split screen, Mic Ty uses TELIPORTME and Mr Ben may have a favourite or know of something that's an industry secret. Cupix, Holobuilder and Structionsite specialise in Construction but expensive unless justified.

Theta X overheating is a big issue. Working with a camera that keeps turning off is terrible. It is probably caused by a design error, so it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to fix. Combining the best of these 2 cameras could result in a "monster" of a camera, but best in class. But, at the end of 2023, there is no news about it.

Well, everything! Now things will work. I hope that I will catch the day when the Ricoh company fixes the Theta+ application. Solve the problem with choosing a font, adding text and moving the added objects. Everyone knows that it is important not only to take a picture, but also to process it correctly.

I use the Z1 because of it's metal case. Does the X have a metal case. I use to use the SC until it fell over in strong wind and broke. I got it fixed and only use the Z1 as I think the one inch sensor does a better job.

If you are using a monopod, high winds can be an issue. I have found when there are high winds that using a standard tripod can save your equipment from expensive repair costs.

Ben, I've got the Z1 and I have to say that the HDR RENDERING makes the best photo quality. Absolutely no noise and seriously better results than the bracketing mode. I use the JPGs which I just little bit color correct in PS. After that I use TOPAZ GIGAPIXEL to twice the resolution. Results are just AWESOME. I made virtual tour of a 3 floor military museum like that and it looks very very sharp in every details. Much quicker than bracketing and also better results 👍

That’s good to hear! Although I find bracketing with the dual fisheye plugin, then removing noise & sharpening with topaz to produce a better result as it also increases dynamic range beyond what the inbuilt HDR rendering can do. Also HDR rendering reduces the resolution a bit, FYI.

Hello Ben, Not sure if you will see this, I looked at your virtual tour comparisons and am still a bit at a loss.. Most of the best software seems to be subscription based, however I work for an environmental survey company and we have been getting requests to create virtual style spaces for things such as emergency evacuation sites for hazard maps. This means we would need a tour to be able to hand off to the client so they can host it themselves, or a service that will let us continually host the "tour" without additional fees... Do you have a recommended software for this kind of problem..? Everything I look at seems to be aimed at the real estate market which means that every doll house is temporary by design... The software most people in my field use is Esri`s ArcGIS which allows you to make webstory maps..

I've been using the X for a month now and I find it meets my expectations for Zillow tours. If I wanted to do very high end tours then I would just go to my DSLR. I'm an advocate of larger sensors and dynamic range benefits but when comparing the z to the x I found that the low resolution from the z was a deal breaker. When I pinch zoomed on the Z there was little potential to view details in the images. With the X I find it adequate but not ideal. I think both of these devices fall in to the pure utilitarian category rather than "high end" product. Even through the workflow from a DSLR and Pano-head is tedious I don't think there will be a substitute for it a full sized camera is designed to reduce distortion, aberrations and has vastly more dynamic range. What we really need is a software/hardware setup which will automate a DSLR bracketing and rotation.

@@fabrizio-6172 Using a panoramic head, 14MM lens on full frame camera, Bracketing for HDR and using PT GUI to stitch the image together. But honestly, It's not worth the time investment which is why I don't really offer the service any more. real estate photography doesn't need that kind of quality, but I really wish these smaller 360 cameras had better functions so that the one could bracket, meter the exposure and color correct via Lightroom and photomatix. They just aren't built for industrial applications, by "industrial" I mean user friendly for repeated use. At the same time I really can't justify Matterport either.

my biggest isue is, that i am not willing to spend monthly money on lightroom for adapting the images to get a perfect outcome, for me, it is ,and should be a hobby !, not yet talked about stitching hehe

I bought the X (to replace my stolen Z1) and I'm willing to do the extra work(flow) the Z1 requires. I miss Z1's dynamic range and larger sensor. I freaked out after watching this video-the part about Z1's chromatic aberration, but I have not run into trouble with it. Next, doing "window pulls" is essential to my real estate photography, and window views are premium. Megapixels can be a gimmick. Sensor size isn't. For pro use, Z1 wins! Its price tells a big part of the comparison story. The only problem I've had with Z1 is circular banding.

Love the quick workflow on the Theta X and with bracketing (jpg) you could get great results. I sent it back this week for a refund for the following reasons: Battery life(battery is replaceable for £40/ battery.. or you can plug in a powerbank) is not as good as the Insta360 x2 that also have useable stabilization for video as well as great HDR jpgs. It also has a more capable editing app. I will miss the Theta X and its big touch screen (insta360 one x2's screen is pretty much useless and annoying) but the only plugin available on it is streaming... Yes you have the "app store" with only one app. Hopefully that changes in the future.. As i said above i will miss it, but here in the UK it costs £900... And for a 900 point and shoot i'd expect less cons.. And we haven't even mentioned the Theta X overheating.

@@ikayhargley yes you can. And now i think it supports iPhone airpods as microphones. (I'm on android). I would love the x2 but it no longer supports Street view creation of blue line without difficulty workaround. Always some cons and pros

I have and had no issues. Also, a great feature for 360 tours is the time shift mode on the X makes 360 photo tours easier on the photo shoot side - click the shutter (either the half-moon button under the screen or a screen tap) and it shoots the forward lens. Then it starts a timer (you can set the delay - I use 3s) to allow you to walk around to the front of the camera and then it shoots the rear lens. No more needing to "hide out" to keep from being in the shot.

I know about that shooting option, but I really didnt expect it to work without full compatibility with matterport(as I know matterport doesnt support 11K imagery at the moment, just 5.5k), and also, don't you have to press shutter on mobile device/ipad doing matterport scans? I'm planning to use it for matterport tours 95% of the time.

@@razqy Sorry about that. You're right about the Capture app (I use Android) does require you to hit the shutter remotely. I was actually making 2 points and should have clarified that. I've edited my comment to make it clearer. Matterport Capture won't actually work if you have the Theta in Time Shift mode - it needs to be in "Normal" shutter mode. I have the camera on 11MP and HDR and Matterport does bring those in. I don't know if it's down sampling the image or if it is bringing them in natively. However you can take photos separately from the Matterport Capture app and then import the photos. So that's an option if you want to use Time Shift. The images are automatically stitched by the camera so you're still presenting a single image to MP. You lose the realtime model creation so might miss some shot overlaps you need although I tend to take way more than I technically could just to make sure I get the best model possible. I do a fair amount of exterior or combined exterior & interior 360 tours (I use Kuula to host them). For those I don't use MP because I'm not always impressed with how it treats exteriors. Using Kuula can transition between the exterior & interior shots better. Time Shift is a huge help in terms of speeding up the process because having to go find a hiding place or leaving the camera unattended sucks up time & carries risk of camera theft. Oh, I also carry a couple of spare batteries but if it's a bigger shoot I Velcro a small USB power bank to my monopod and plug it into the camera. The USB-C port is in the side so it doesn't get in the way and with a right angle connector and the cable tie-wrapped to the monopod it doesn't infringe into the photos where a quick edit with Affinity Photo or Lightroom can't take care of it.

Thank you! It's kinda hard to choose between Z1 and X fot matterport at the moment, because there's no full support for theta x, but I've contacted matterport and they intend to make it compatible. So I guess I will go with Theta X even if atm it produces lower quality photos in matterport(5.5k theta X, 8k Theta z1 if im not wrong), but when it will be fully supported, it should be better. Also I'm not planning to edit the 360's, so raw absence doesnt affect me.

Hi Ben thank you very much for your clarification regarding the 2 cameras, I would prefer the Z1, because of the Bracketing .... for now, however, I wait and see if the price is lowered or if I find a used one (as I did with the Kandao 8k found used at less than half price), if I buy the Z1 at full price, I could risk a divorce ...

This video proves that it’s not… 60MP looks nearly identical to 23MP. Sensor size is more important.

I do not want to argue, but when I compare 6912x3456 picture from Mi Sphere with 6080x3040 picture from Insta360 One X or X2 the picture from Mi Sphere is more sharp and detailed, even One X and One X2 are more modern cameras. Especially images from One X2 are very grainy, probably because DNG images is created from couple of images that are stacked together.

Muy buena comparativa! Pero no entiendo por qué no una X con sensor de una pulgada de la Z1… aun teniendo más precio habrían arrasado en el mercado semiprofesional… creo que no han acertado en la estrategia frente a insta360. Podrían haber hecho una X más económica y una XL?.. 😂😂😂 con sensor una pulgada más pro!

Extremely disappointed by this Ricoh Theta X. Doing lots of 360 imagery with pro DSLR, I though this device would help me getting some HD shots super quickly and save me time while working insitu. It is quick indeed, but the quality is not good enough for me. I feel that the imagery is not sharp at all at 100%, side stitching super blurry, and sometime lots of weird artefacts in the sky area. So this camera is useless for my work purpose. I will keep it though for workshop purposes with kids since it is very easy to use and the screen helps. But it doesnt justify its heavy 1000$ for me.
