Insta360 One X2 review: The most fun camera

Insta360 just announced the next generation of its One X line of cameras: the One X2. This model adds an LCD touchscreen viewfinder and, really, most of the features found in the more expensive Insta360 One R. For the last couple of weeks, the One X2 has consistently motivated me to get out of the house, get active and see what kind of crazy footage I can capture. Honestly, it made me like a kid again.

Don’t buy a @insta360 I bought one for my travel to Europe and 6 days after buying it both lenses got scratched, the videos look horrible, THIS IS NOT AN ACTION CAMERA!!! buy a GoPro, believe me! You can write to me if you need more info but as a customer don’t buy this!!! A cellphone camera lasts much more than the insta 360; the solution they gave me is to pay $198 dollars to replace them and I didn’t even had a month with the camera … buy a go pro or any other but not this one!

youtube does horrible things with overcompression if you upload in 1080p. Best bet is to upscale your 1080 footage to 4K so that YT uses different level of compression. Even when watching it back at 1080 on YT, the result is much better. The quality of the footage looks terrible and I can't help thinking thats mostly due to YT but there is no way to tell.

I like this video talks about the actual pain point for the 360 video camera, the editing part. I got a free samsung 360 video camera when I bought a Note 9. I only used twice, then it's sitting there collecting dust. Watched your video makes me want to take it out and try again even though it is already 2 years old.

Ahhh my dude I really enjoyed this review! I'm discovering more and more in my own creative journey that I'm so much less concerned about stats and 'best' and much more interested in what gets me out shooting and enjoying the creative process. With some kiddo's running around the house I love the concept of this as a 'always catch the moment' machine when the off-frame kiddo does something hilarious and with hobbies like RC's, Fatbiking, and Motorbikes the ability to have a small easy to carry machine that has all these features seems excellent!! I'm hoping that one of these is under the tree... but if not I'll be placing an order on Boxing Day I think!! A note about your review too - it was the one that best let me know what the 'feeling' and 'experience' of shooting and editing with this machine would be. The rest of the video's out there just feel like someone reading a brochure so WELL DONE!!

I've been a GoPro dude as long as they've been around but I just won a free insta360 one X2 in an office party raffle and I'm excited but also intimidated trying to figure the whole thing out as I'm not too heavy into video making. Ice review I have a 360 1R and really liked it you mentioned the GoPro Max I had it before I got the one r and it was pretty awful to use super buggy pretty standard GoPro battery issues won't stay charged won't charge all of those wonderful GoPro problems I actually talked to some professional photographers with the project that I was working with at the time ask them what I was doing wrong and they said the biggest mistake that I made was I bought a GoPro so you probably want to leave that GoPro max out of your camera lineup thanks for the review

Yeah, the image quality can definitely be wonky and sometimes is hard to avoid the flaws. That being said, overall I think it does a pretty good job of doing stitch work/stabilization etc. where it's worth the tradeoff of not having to do that stuff yourself. Also both the camera firmware and apps were still in beta while filming this video and they have been releasing updates.

Thanks for the very informative video. One question though: why would editing via the app impact on your phone data plan? Surely you’re connected directly (on wifi or Bluetooth) and not going, somehow, through the cloud. That would be a complete deal-breaker for me, for many reasons.

Thanks! Question: if you put this camera on steady cam with one lens, and you use the invisible selfie stick, how do you turn that one lens towards you? It seems you cannot bend the camera in an angle from the selfie stick??

Well kind of the main idea is that you're always just capturing "360 degrees" and then in post you can point the camera wherever you want. But there is a mode where you can just record through one of the lenses (your choice) in regular wide angle 16:9. Also not sure what effect you'd get using it with a steady cam and selfie stick. The stabilization is pretty good handheld and the selfie stick wouldn't "get rid of" a steady cam below it.

I haven't shot 360 any at all but I had a Flip video camera also. I couldn't understand why they didn't make accessories for it ( bar mounts, helmet mounts etc.) since it was a design clearly screaming for those things. Enter Go Pro a few years later.

I'm not sure exactly, but I think it's a combo of the pole sitting perfectly in the stitch line plus some software magic. If you look closely, your hand holding the pole looks a little funky but overall a pretty amazing effect.

If you choose 360 recording, does it record 360 all de time? I mean, I see the camera "spinning" in the videos, but it's not actually rotating, the camera recorded all around and when editing you choose which angle to show (because you have all angles recorded), is that it?

I personally hate the fish eye effect/distortion of lines that comes with wide-angle. Can I avoid it completely while recording, as opposed to fixing it post?
