Install a New Felt Seal on a Clothes Dryer Drum

Dryer felt seal replacement on a clothes dryer drum. To replace the rear felt seal on a dryer you will need to remove the drum. The method to change a felt seal on a clothes dryer drum is similar on all models. The old seal has to be removed, then remove the old glue, install the new felt seal and glue it into the proper position.
Using a heat gun and a scraper removes the glue from the drum without destroying the painted surface. Also shown is how to use medium size binder clips to hold the new felt seal onto the dryer drum while slipping it over the lip of the drum.
Whirlpool manufactured clothes dryers for Kenmore, Roper, Kitchen-aid and Inglis. The dryer in this video is a 29 inch (wide) Kenmore. These dryers are all very similar and you should find this video helpful for repairing the other Whirlpool manufactured dryers.

Great tips guys and girls. Couple of things I'd like to add some are tips from other users. 1. Felt was a bit small so my wife and I had to pull on it just a little bit to help stretch it to fit around the drum. 2. Goo gone definitely helped just put some on and let it sit for just a few minutes. 3. Dremel was a life-saver. Used a soft polishing pad and along with the the goo gone and in about 10 minutes I had done both sides of the drum. 4. Make sure you wipe off the goo gone with some alcohol prior to adding glue. 5. Would recommend the larger binder clips but make sure you don't get an glue on them otherwise it'll start to pull off the felt. Again thanks for all the tips! Saved me a couple hundred bucks with this diy project.

Thanks! This was very helpful on knowing what to expect and nice editing to keep it short. A wire brush on my drill cleaned off glue without taking off paint in about 10 min but avoid edges. Clothes pins worked similarly and just had to keep stretching along the way. Thanks again!

Allow some extra time to clean out a lot of lint. I just helped a neighbor replace a felt seal, I think we spent as much time cleaning as it took to replace the felt. Make sure you vacuum the lint off of the motor. Lint built up can cause it to over heat. Best wishes for an easy repair.

Hey Tim, it's nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the compliment and the confirmation that I am including enough information to complete a job. I just put a video up called "Why a Dryer is Leaving Black Marks on Clothes", it shows the old felt seal and goes over some of the symptoms of a failing real seal on a dryer drum. I am rehabbing my dryer. They don't make appliances that last as long as these anymore. The parts cost around $75. If I clean the motor off every few years, I think this dryer could last another 15-20 years.

Exactly what my dryer was doing, getting dark streaks on clothes, then we found a strip of the seal outer vinyl layer in with a load of clothes and then could see a loose piece hanging out of the back of the drum. BTW, I used a razor scraper to remove most of the old glue being careful not to scratch the paint then some acetone to get as much of it off as I could. I think you may have had the wrong seal because mine fit just fine, I didn't have to stretch and clip it. There are so many different models I imagine it would be really easy to get the wrong part. Also, I think it was best (for my installation) to put a small bead of glue around the lip of the drum first then fit the seal over it. After about 20 min. I went around to remove any drips while it was still semi liquid that were hanging down into the roller track. Thanks for the video, nice to pick up little tips when you haven't done something like this before

1 stretch the the seal and get u a roll of .25 in two sided tape. Put the two sided tape on the inside of the drum close to edge. Remove Paper to expose tape. Attach seal to one side and it will be much easier to glue the seal into place.

I used A LOT of binder clips to hold it place & I used SOS PADS to scrub off the old adhesive that really worked! ... no scratching the enamel at all . I used Brush paint cleaner with cotton balls later on to clean up any extra adhesive that might of leaked out to clean it up

To remove the adhesive from the drum, we used Goof Off Pro Strength Remover and Scotch Brite Non-Scratch Scour Pads. Also lots of elbow grease. We didn't want to scratch the paint from the drum.

Gotta be super careful if you use Goof-Off, it removes pretty much anything it touches... recommend doing that on driveway

What type of heat adhesive is used? Felt seal it s good, just came up in few spots, Looks like they forgot to put glue there, so what type of adhesive because I have different types.

Have tried Goo-Gone pro, have tried heat gun, have tried acetone...any other ideas??? I would love to put this dryer back together. It will be my quarantine project.

If you didn't already do so, have a look at the comments, other people have shared some other ways they removed the glue. Dremel tool with a buffer, scotch brite pads, Goof off pro strength to name a few things. I did have to work a bit to get the glue removed. There is a least one bright side to the quarantine, a lot of us are getting things done that were put off for years.

While you have it open, clean out any lint that may have accumulated around the motor. Excellent presentation AND tips. Nice to see a lady not depend on someone else for help. MAJOR TIP: When removing the front panel of the dryer be sure to glue (or silicone) the Harris clips that the two screws screw into. They clip on to the edge of the front panel. If you don't, and they are loose, they will fall off and will fall into the dryer inner compartment. I did it at least two times (maybe three times) and had to tip the dryer up to get them to fall out where I could get to them. It's a major (and very frustrating) time waster. Make sure the front panel lower edge is on the little clasps that are on the front edge of the dryer cabinet (all while trying to hold the dryer tub up enough to mate with the front panel). THEN, and only then, do you screw in the two screws to hold on the front panel. Good luck. I had to replace the gas valve on my dryer and was lucky to get a used part on Ebay for $14 plus /$8 shipping and a little tax. My felt strip cost $18 and free shipping. I have also had to replace the igniter years ago. Had to buy it twice because I broke the very delicate igniter material. Treat it delicately like a new born baby.

You just saved my sanity. Both my clips had fallen off, and I could not figure out how those two screws were supposed to hold anything. I pulled off the front, and there they were, laying in the bottom of the machine.
