Amazing how well Dishy works just laying flat without azimuth and elevation adjustments. I am looking forward to hearing progress reports as time marches on. Hopefully, the folks back at Starlink are taking notes on your unusual installation to improve future Starlink antennas for mobile and marine use. Starlink is clearly a major game changer for high speed Internet connection for the marine cruising community. Well done Sean, I'm impressed with your ingenuity. No wonder Elizabeth keeps you around ;)

Yeah I mean since they don’t have lnb’s they have thousands of little circuits that can be used to focus. But I I didn’t know it did it dynamically but I guess it would have to, sats move fast and my dish doesn’t track with its motor, it just gets it into a general position for best reception

It would not there would be lots of brown outs. So for gaming would be unbearable. For downloads brownouts don't matter as much if you don't mind a few lost packages. I am sure if everyone does this this would stress their system enough to where these mods will be blocked by software. Basically the constellation now has to do the math to find which one will communicate with you then send your packets there. They would rather you face a predesignated target consistently.

Glad it works for you. I was not expecting it would. I assumed they put so much effort into designing it so that it can point in just the right direction that without it, the usability would have greatly suffered, apparently not.

So the "dish" is a phased array, and can compensate without gimbals and still produce cable modem speed, awesome. The frequencies of search radar are so much lower than satellite freqs, should be no problem... Unless there is an IF strip in Starlink, but that is old school audio stuff. Bravo Zulu on a great install, and very interesting content!

For your cellular solution you should look at a Pepwave Cellular router with the external antenna. With our RV the service range and signal improved significantly over a hotspot. Mostly because of the external antenna. Also the use of multiple SIM cards from various providers was a big bonus.

Thanks for sharing this. I think the interesting concept is that a boat is in motion potentially all of the time, even when not moving it can still roll and pitch. The issue with that is your transmission beam can fall off of the bird, and potentially hit another satellite (that’s why the FCC is involved). Normally this is prevented with a transmit inhibit that locks out transmission when the receive lock is lost. I’m sure you have seen that Starlinkbis now available for yachts, $5000/mo and $10,000 for equipment. This includes two Starlink units, but I don’t think we know yet how they are different from normal units.

One thing to look forward to that’s not mentioned, is base stations are currently required by each satellite as mentioned. StarLink 2 satellites have laser communication so they just have to be able to see another StarLink satellite with base station access. So the Infrastructure roll out doesn’t need base stations and therefore permission of other countries.

i have the original "dishy" on my 63' Hatteras. I went simple and just mounted pole mount for a traditional parabolic antenna. This left the movement servos still in place on the dish antenna. At anchor, it does not move much as the constellation of Statellites moving overhead pretty much keeps the dish acting like it's fixed on a geostationary target, but it does subtlety move. The movement is not robust enough to keep up when the boat cruising... but I love ❤ it!

Is there a risk to the RF transmission energy from Fishy? I know there is for systems that use geostationary birds with an obvious need for greater transmission power. My point is - would it be smarter to mount it higher so you cannot get between it and the open sky for health/safety concerns?

A Job Well Done ! Congrats ! I wouldn't mind Starlink for my Next Boat, but suspect I will have to wait a while for things to change a bit before it'll make sense for a 40 ft ish Sailboat. Likely to do fine with Iridium Go for what I need, with Weather Gribs feed into MFD Network. I won't be bothering with TV on the boat or Sound System either, as Bluetooth Speaker for music from Tablet and phone will be fine, mostly for Audio books. I've got a pretty good AM FM SSB Short wave receiver as well, and a mast stay with an ATU, should pick stuff up globally. Hey Shawn, I think I've found out why your AGM Batteries died so fast ! Apparently the Charge Amperage Needs to be a Minimum of 40% of the Total Storage Capacity, to be in with a Shout of completely refreshing the Carge Capacity. If 200 AH Storage, Optimum may be up to 27 amps rather than 20 amps ? Great Channel on KZfaq I've been watching, is Pacific Yacht Systems Lectures. They have a large amount of Videos with highly informative Content, and they are up your way if you need a chat with them. My only connection with them is as a viewer of their Videos, but I may need to getbin touch with them, to finalise what I need for a reliable to Standard wiring and device setup, before the new boat gets into a Construction Slot. When .I make it to the Pacific, I may get them to check that all electronics onboard are 100%, given all,of my electrical engineering experience and qualifications are Land Based rather than Marine. I was leaning towards Carbon AGM Bstteries, but have found Reasonable priced Marine 12v 206AH lifepo4 of excellent quality without Heaters, by SOK - about 1100 euros each over here, with heaters over 1300 euros each. Seems heaters can be bad news, and a bit of insulation around them should remove any need. I intend being mostly in warm/hot places anyway. Next task for me, is to find a decent Marine grade Wind Generator with Decent Output, that's not too noisy. Could be a challenge. Best Wishes to you both, plus pats for the dogs. Bob. 👍🙂

@wizardgmb
@wizardgmb 2 жыл бұрын
The system picks the best satellite it can find within its limited field and throughput is whatever it can get rather than steering to an "optimal" satellite. Throughput would probably be better and more consistent it the steering was intact. I believe the satellite selection criteria includes utilization of the satellites in view so being able to steer would allow the system to select a less congested satellite closer to the horizon for better throughput.

Could be a gamechanger in comms offshore! It will be interesting to see what angle of pitch and roll are tollerable, Pity it is restricted to anchorage/quayside usage. You're not up there often - consider putting hazard tape across the top of it. Wouldn't want to stand on it! In the North Sea, there is a 4G system operated by Tampnet, using repeater stations on offshore installations - but NOTHING like that speed! Also the cost is rather prohibitive for private use. A very useful video which will be useful for so many, I think. Thanks!

While not officially aligned with Starlink (one day maybe?), through other work we do I've installed 11 of these dishes to date for private residences (in New Zealand). While the cost is certainly up there people will pay for fast, reliable internet. If there are limited choices, and in NZ outside of urban areas your choices get pretty limited pretty fast, Starlink is a good option. The upfront cost is certainly high, but ongoing it's not horrendous, currently a little less than double the average monthly rate for a fibre connection. In my area we have a company which provides a pretty good wireless service too, which I think limits the uptake of Starlink a bit.

Nice fabrication and install. Might of wanted to consider using a 1/4-1/2" spacer on the bolts to keep the dish raised off the pilot house roof just a tad. This would of allowed water to flow freely under the dish, minimized the need/use of excess sealant and possible leak areas as well as you could of easily tapered/curved the spacers to the arch of the roof to lay flat as well. In installations like this using a sealant on the deck grid (diamond patterns) the seal you created is prone to failing possibly. With a voided warranty I would aim to minimum these potential issues by the raised unit. I hope that makes sense... Been a year so hopefully it is working fine and staying dry inside.

StarLink right now just supports the "portability" as the concept of driving your RV to a new location, and setting up the external dish antenna... but NOT using the antenna in an "in-motion" type setup. While it will technically function, they'll void your warranty because Starlink currently does not intend for the existing dish to be used safely in any "in-motion" type deployment.

.... ummmm has an automatic firmware download not disabled the use of Dishy while in motion over 10mph? That would be a bummer 'cause there are online nav apps that could be useful.

Elizabeth said they don't recommend installing Starlink as they did due to voiding the warranty and locking themselves into their own installation method. Personally, I don't find the appearance of the dish objectionable, especially with the big rotating radar antenna a few feet away. Since the system can't be utilized underway and has to be shut off for fear of being sent to pergatory, I would have rigged a quick release mechanism for the downtube. The dish could be stowed while in transit to prevent wind damage and keep its circuitry out of the path of the radar signal. I doubt Starlink has qualified or would approve of mounting their dish a few feet away from an active radar antenna! Stowing would preserve the warranty and avoid any future problems with Starlink objecting to the installation method. It will be very interesting when they call Starlink technical support the first time and after querying the device the tech says "Well there's your problem, the steering motors aren't working!"... 🤔 Others such as myself may have a different perspective but in the end, they did what they felt was best for them. Keep up the great videos and above all STAY SAFE? ⛴️❤️😁

Can you update how starlink is working for you now that RV, car, boat, and air travel has been added to their services?

Interesting that you've eliminated the automated slewing of the receiver plate for the Starlink and are getting adequate performance. We're still looking for utility out in the Bahamas, and Starlink's not ready for prime time out there.

Works in FL im betting it would work fine for you. I would find a Dish Network Mobile dome and modify it before I disabled the tracking like they did

Yeah, we have Starlink as well on our boats and home... but ours were professionally installed by licensed reps. Hmmm.... we also kept the old satellite dome.
