Admittedly, it's been a while since I installed XP from USB, but I seem to remember having pretty good success with Easy2Boot back in the day. One of the advantages there is that you don't need to extract the ISO. You can just dump it (and many other ISOs) onto an Easy2Boot USB drive and go.

I use Ventoy to make a multi-biot USB drive (have to set whether or not the flash drive is either MBR or gpt, and if you want secure boot enabled. Then you just copy the iso files over.

@@corey7219 yeah I don't think Ventoy works with XP, but for non retro stuff it's really awesome!. How good is having only a bunch of ISOs on a USB stick, and still being able to use it for other stuff!

@@nrg753 my exp, it can work with xp, 2k as well, but the issue is often that older systems are....tetchy with booting from usb and you may need to make sure to use a smaller drive i have also found that some you need to make the boot partition fat16, the storage can be fat32 but boot MUST be 16 on some old rigs... its a bios limitation from what i have seen.. there are a stack of ways to do this, on old or new windows, honestly the last time i did it i just copied the command lines from a guide a buddy wrote a long time ago, then copied the files i extracted from the ISO and updated with all the patches and drivers needed, and used unstoppable copier to just copy the folder to the root of the usb.. i could have used the xcopy command but... that would mean more typing .. rather then a few clicks and short wait for the copy to complete.. ventoy CAN work on older systems, i have not tested 9x with it.. but have been told by a buddy who i introduced to ventoy, that hes installed 98se, beos, os/2 warp, nt3.5, nt4, and redhat linux all from that era(redhad from a cd image he made from the first widely distributed redhat book he had is pickup for him.. way back then..), though he did have to update the bios on a few old systems to get them to boot from a normal ventoy disk rather then one with tweaks. there are a few similar options like Easy2Boot, as well as some micro/mini linux distros that use this method that you can drop more iso's onto the drive along side the linux iso and boot from them via the boot menu... (trick i use to use to setup 9x from an iso on a usb stick back in the day.. also let me boot windowsPE very very fast..

Hey Phil, the last time I installed XP was just after the root certificates expired … it was a bit annoying to do, but I got it working. It seems like a walkthrough for setting up XP with all of the patches and the like people will want installed would be a good idea and companion to a similar video I recall you did for win98/me (which ultimately aren't significantly different anymore, but I'd still recommend 98 so you can write a boot floppy from the GUI if you need one.)

you can actually still make a boot floppy with ME, its just less convenient, a big of googling shows you how, hell you can do it from command prompt with the format command still in ME.. and regardless of what some think and claim, ME still runs on dos, and i have made many a boot floppy from the commandline on ME... back in the day often to allow me to upgrade the system to 98se.. that had far less issues on systems of the era.. mostly due to some stuff that they stuck on with no easy way to disable.. like the proto system restore function thats like NT's restore points...just... not once have i ever seen it work on ME.. when i was in the beta or the full versions i used... not f-ing once... but... yeah... *bangs head into desk* and note by NT i mean 2k/xp/etc, thats more like OS2 then Dos, honestly its too bad MS and IBM split on that... os2/warp was fucking great for some applications, way faster then windows of the era on the same hardware from my exp... and with windows installed you could run most dos and windows apps without much trouble...

@Dave_en
@Dave_en 8 ай бұрын
@@garchamp9844I agree SP4 is bit laggy and SP3 is far better. In fact Windows XP without service pack is fastest and requires less memory but has stability issues. SP2 was much better back in those days. As we go on installing service packs the OS keeps on getting bloated. Nowadays XP has become obsolete and we cant risk our computers by going online even after installing SP4 unofficial pack. So SP3 is the safest bet for running good old softwares which we still need. I have few old laptops from 2002 and 2007 or 2008 and thinking to revive them. 2002 model was especially designed for xp and 2007 for vista. Though 2002 model could run windows 95 or earlier too. But this 2007 model has SATA drive requiring separate drivers for xp. I am also planning to mod 11.2.06 intel sata driver to make it generic for xp on any hardware, though there is no guarantee that it would run on latest SATA system.
@Dave_en
@Dave_en 8 ай бұрын
@@mesterakDont risk your system with suspicious pirated version of xp. Already the support has ended in 2014. With SP4 your system gets updated for 2016 but beyond that xp is unreliable. So you can only use it to run certain old programs that you still need or just play around just for fun. Back in the days of XP i used to play around with windows 98SE and Me. Tried out windows 95 too but all these became obsolete piece of crap that i no longer needed. Same is the case with windows 7 nowadays but i still use it offline.

One of the best things I use for installing any OS is a USB external drive caddy that I put an ssd into and put all my ISOs onto, and it allows me to select the ISO and mounts it as a virtual cd/dvd drive that supports both bios and uefi modes. It runs at up to USB3.0 (approx 500MB/s) depending on the USB port and drive you install into it. It's called the iodd 2531 and cost me about £56, which is expensive for an external HDD caddy, but the virtual cd/dvd drive functionality is worth its weight in gold, some really old motherboards aren't supported, but usually they don't support USB boot anyway so it's a moot point.

Windows 7 just use RUFUS to write ISO onto USB, or use this tool if you want one stick for all the operating Systems 🙂

A very informative video. I have a question though as I'm very new to this and need a bit of help with the software side of things. Do I need a Windows Product Key to complete the installation? Thanks!

I'm curious which version of ISO you used, XPSP0, XPSP1, XPSP2. XPSP3 or even XPSP4 and (How) you got USB support into the image before boot? Was it injected by the WinSetupFromUSB ? If so.. do you know which USB controllers it prefers, UHCI, EHCI, OHCI, xHCI ? USB wasn't part of WinXP if I recall from the beginning it was an add-on bus after XP was launched, then we had USB 1.0, 1.1 and USB 2.0 but now we seem to have so much USB 3.0 (NEC/Renesas for the win!) it almost seems like it would be XPSP2 with USB2.0 hardware only. was XP nLite used to customize the ISO? So many possibilities pop into my head.

XP Pro SP3 the 32 Bit version! Best for retro gaming 🙂 The computer has to support USB booting of course. Once inside Windows you get USB 2.0, but for 3.0 speed you need to load drivers first.

With this method can you use "vanilla" (non-modified) WinXP ISO, or do you need to slipstream SATA drivers into ISO anyway?

With VIA be careful, the SATA ports can be weird, but otherwise should be fine.

Okay, i hit the first option (installing ahci drivers) but it says 0 drivers installed, not like in ur case as it is found a INF file and installed it automaticly. Did you slipstreamed any drivers in your iso? Or how on earth you able to install those ahci drivers?

Im trying to go for an authentic installation without third party programs. But i will run into one issue. All my PC components are windows XP compatible, except for the SATA drives (x2 HDD’s, and DVD drive). My motherboard no longer has its drivers listed on its website, but i do have the CD that came with it. I’m hoping SATA drivers are included in the disc as well? Hypothetically, could I go into my bios, switch to IDE mode, and then install windows XP. Then install my mobo drivers, restart PC back into bios, and switch back to AHCI?

Rufus works too! Don't need anything else either. Turns any ISO into a bootable USB for BIOS or UEFI.

And whatever configuration you have , it will detect proper sata drivers and make this work ? Because even with proper drivers - F6 etc it's a pain in the ass to make the installation and even impossible on some configs .
@philscomputerlab

Try it! It has most SATA drivers integrated and auto detects the correct one.

Having trouble with this. My SATA drive shows up in the BIOS and I have selected AHCI mode. When selecting to use a SATA driver, it gives me a choice of two. One makes the install crash before it reaches the partitioning screen (with a keyboard error!) and with the other, the drive doesn't show up on the partitioning screen.
@ClassicSteve
@ClassicSteve Жыл бұрын
I solved it. I had to still press F6 and manually select both drivers before the HDD would show up.
