If you are restoring a muscle car, you're probably going to have to reupholster the rear seat at some point. Whether changing the color or just freshening up the interior, the rear seat is a pretty straight-forward process. This video will guide you through the process

I searched for help because I must redo the appalling work done by local upholsterers despite paying top dollar. Evidently they are better at talking than doing actual quality work. Thank you for this great video.

@StormedNorm We use vinyl on the bottom for a little extra support and structural integrity for the portion of the seat that takes the most abuse (at least in our case). If you would like to use new cotton batting on the back, or vinyl, or whatever you have laying around, it certainly cannot hurt your restoration. Rear seats typically don't get anywhere near the use that front seats do.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Your videos are instructional and easy to follow. Good video quality allows me to pause and examine the details of the install. You have made my project much easier to do.

@TheWicho46 We typically use vinyl when we recover seats in house. We have tons of it and it works well as a moisture barrier and extra support for the springs. That's all the burlap was for originally: to spread the foam's foot-print out on the springs so it didn't eat right through.

Dimensions for our rear seat foam are 1-1/2" X 36" X 68". It is larger than you should need, and intended to be cut down to your application.

This video, and several of your others, are terrific! Though I was really disappointed when I visited your site and found that you don't offer the pre-sewn seat covers for my car (1971 Ford Maverick 2dr). ARG! I would have ordered in a heartbeat. The seats have great bones, but the fabric is shot.

@714638 The rear seat foam is about 2 inches thick. One sheet is suitable for padding either a cushion or a backrest, and it is sold as one piece. So if you're restoring the whole back seat set, you'll need two pieces.

We use side cutters, also known as wire cutters. A good pair with at least a 6 inch handle allows you to grab, twist and cut the hog-rings off.

David, Vinyl/burlap isn't necessary for the backrest. The purpose of the added layer of material is to help spread the force/weight of a person out over the springs to help prevent foam break-down under that weight. Just like trying to lift a piece of furniture with a sharp ledge, it's easier on your hands to cover that ledge to spread out the force. Adding it certainly won't hurt if you want to add it.

@mtokman1 Basic tools needed for this job are heat and hog ring pliers. We use an air-powered hog ring gun on some applications. You'll also need to obtain hog rings themselves. Heat - Get your upholstery warm before you start. Put it out in that hot Hawaii sun to loosen it up!

There are several places you can look, but leather pretty much is leather and you're going to pay for it one way or another. We have about 6 colors we keep on hand covering the "main colors" that people tend to use, or you can contact your local upholstery shop. They're likely to have a better selection since trim shops typically deal with a lot more custom orders than a manufacturer like us.

@wmkitt Unfortunately we are constrained to work in the space we have. As a manufacturer the majority of our space is dedicated to producing upholstery and soft trim, so we have to work on larger seats on the floor of our pattern office. The equipment you see in the background is used to digitize original pieces of material from upholstery so we can reproduce them, exactly the same, every time, via computer aided cutting.

Springs are still good, but everything else is falling apart. what other material can I used if the brown patatoe sack looking material is shoot. I see you re-used yours. Also were can I find material for my seat's? EXCELLENT WORK

@DjDano500 Can you please clarify? We manufacture upholstery patterned and assembled as original, meaning we reverse engineer a seat cover GM or Mopar made and put together reproductions the same way they did. If you wish to purchase a seat cover please visit our site to locate an authorized retailer. The cover you receive will be ready to install over your frame, although we always recommend you purchase new foam, as well.

@LandiLisa Sorry, but we have stayed away from the Ford market for several reasons. Because of that I'm not an expert on who manufactures Maverick parts, but there's bound to be someone out there. Good luck with your restoration!

@electonixG All of our panels are dielectrically sealed, so we do not have experience in hand-making door panels. You would be best served to speak with an upholstery shop about a one-off project like that.

@yodasnshit Usually rear seat frames are pretty level across the cushion, but not all are the same. Not knowing what model car you have we couldn't say for sure, but I'd recommend you contact a shop that specializes in your model. For example, if you have an Impala, you might try Hubbard's, a Chevelle, try Ausley's, or a Camaro check with Camaro Central. These retailers specialize in their models and KNOW everything about them, where as we know about upholstery rather than frames.

This is just a guess since we do not manufacture any Mustang upholstery, but I'd say 2 inches minimum. However, Mustang foam is so cheap you might consider just picking up one bucket set (one side) to use as a guide to what you need.

We get the majority of these types of tools from a company called Grainger. If you're only doing one car it's not worthwhile, but if you're doing more it may be. You'll need to decide if the expense is worth the return. I'd say if you search for "pneumatic hog ring" you'll probably get some hits.

Awesome video, why did you not use vinyl for the back rest as you did for the bottum? I will be doing my 62 Biscayne interior and was debating about what to use for replacing the old cotton and burlap. I ordered your foam for the seat, should I still use the vinyl for the bottum ? then what for the top? Cotton again with the foam?.

Hi, do you only add batting to the seat back? Also, was the burlap reuseable on this particular seat back rather than using vinyl again?

What was the wire that you threaded into the seat before hog ringing ?, does it need to be a specific gauge ?
@PartsUnlimitedInc
@PartsUnlimitedInc 10 жыл бұрын
Ryan, That's just craft wire. Its a little thicker than a sturdy metal coat hanger, and should be part of your original seat if it's not been mucked with too much over the years. If it's not, you can certainly use a sturdy metal coat hanger. I've used craft wire (the paper-wrapped wire) and coat hangers and both work great.

Okay old video, but really good. What does one do if the rear seat feels spongy, like it has no support. Neither the vinyl or foam will provide it any support that I can see. How does one R&R a back seat if the springs are not up the task anymore? Thanks BTW 66 Chevelle.
@PartsUnlimitedInc
@PartsUnlimitedInc 9 жыл бұрын
san01ramon If your rear seat is no longer strong enough to offer needed support, it's probably time to respring the seat frame or at least reinforce it. Rear seat springs may be available in the after-market, or you may have to make some.
