The reason i think ODST is a more common cosplay is that they are human. Not a supersoldier, a human in armor struggling against nearly insurmountable odds. A hero to aspire to be, not a superhero to be in awe of. Im Much more likely to buy an odst kit.

To be fair, no one ever said the ODST armor had to stop AP .50 BMG, but the idea you might be developing a trauma plate that can catch one and let the wearer survive is definitely neat.

Fast forward a few years and suddenly this man is officially supplying these as new armor systems to the armed forces.

To finish the helmet, all you left out is a ballistic pading layer inside to protect from the weight of the helmet on impact or general battlefield explosions leading to TBI, and a similar "light armor" layer you mentioned earlier to protect from external shrapnel or small arms. I'm down for the ODST stuff, was a fan for years and H3 ODST just hit the spot, been aching for an "ODST 2" "Spartans never die, they do it because they were born to, they're just MIA. ODSTs know they aren't coming home and do it anyway"

If anyone has any questions about the night vision 00 mentioned towards the end of the episode, I have extensive experience using the ENVG-Bs in the field (I was actually in the footage featured) please ask away! As always though, 00's analysis was pretty much spot on.

It's worth noting that whilst the hard armour plating may stop a bullet, the energy of the projectile still needs to be effectively disseminated and absorbed by the armour to prevent transfer to the wearer which would kill them. You could have several inches of titanium to stop a .50 but the energies transfered to the wearer would still cause serious if not immediately fatal injuries. You need to find a way to absorb the energy and disperse it safely away from the wearer.

The position sensor "SMART follower" in the mag is a genius idea. No clue why it isn't more common, as I had the same thought while bored at work one day this past summer - I even sketched out a rough design. We're quickly closing on Halo levels of tech and aside from a few key systems, most of the groundside warfare aspect is *extremely* doable. I can't wait until I get issued ODST battle armor instead of my standard flak & kevlar. Integrated NVDs would be a lot less of a hassle, 1 less thing to lose in the field

A fully working odst helmet is something i love to buy. What you did not mention was the hearing and communikation system of the helmet. Which would likely be similar to some peltor helmet and have microphones on the outside that turn up the noise you hear but are programmed in a way to silence louder noises. Also i thought that some digital nightvision and thermals projected to the visur would be a rather cheap and doable way to make the nightvision functions work. Gosh i need to finaly build the pistol and the smg in real life. XD

I highly recommend checking out the tracking point system and their firearms for further in-depth integration of enhanced targeting systems that already exist and would greatly benefit your projects

On a side note, Holosun has been showing a short range thermal optic at shotshow that allows for night and thermal vision overlayed on the transparent glass of the optic, which somewhat resembles what the ODST have access to in the helmet.

Considering the heating element of thermoregulation, look into heat blankets. They use electric wires woven into a fabric to generate heat. You could weave that into the suit for the heat part.

The question is not "can" we make them, the question is when? We can make them for sure, but the question will always go back to money. How important is the armor, do we really need it right now, is it more important than the other stuff we have, etc. If the army doesn't deem it as important, it will only get shelved let alone get proper funding. It only took us less than a century to start from wooden mock up planes to get them to fly, to super advanced supersonic aircraft, to being able to fly to the moon. Imagine what we could do if they focused on this kind of project with proper funding. DARPA, if I remember, did make something like a heads up display for infantry back in the day. So I don't think we're that far off PS: nice to see you included Matt in your video XD

8:14 I would just like to add that water may be too heavy if used in an entire body armor and it could weight enough to be some level of problem for an *infantry* soldier, not so much for someone in an aircraft. One could use flexible heat-pipes (which are incredible efficient to transfer/absorb heat), I *think* it would be lighter and more energy efficient, but definitely more expensive to produce.

@installation00 Wow... Good job describing the particulars of odst armor and whether it's possible to build your own. Also, I applaud you for your efforts in building both MJOLNIR and ODST armor variants, and I hope you successfully accomplish both... I've been watching you build the MJOLNIR suit and dam, if that's somewhat easy for you(so far) I can't wait to see how much easier ODST armor is for you to make given the parallel designs that are able to be used in either setup

As a former 101st guy, I would totally enlist in Space Force if I can get some legit ODST armor. Having an entire uniform that either stops or decreases the likelihood of getting shot would be... well, it would be a complete game changer in the modern battlefield. Hell, you know the guys who would benefit the most from that tech? Recon guys. Having a full suite of surveillance and monitoring equipment, along with a fully enclosed and temperature regulated suit would allow them to go even further for longer, hampered only by the logistics of sustaining human life (food, sleep, hygiene, etc). I would be happy to volunteer for a field test of the gear when done.

So out of curiosity, will the design incorporate the chestplate compartment that ODST armor is shown having in the live action ad for ODST? It seems there is like a plate layer that the chest piece “hinges on” providing a small space for personal effects.

With the ammo counter, I know that the sensors and displays have been invented as I've seen a video of someone's modified Glock pistol that had the same ammo tracking capabilities as an M41 pulse rifle from Alien, including the ability to tell if there was a chambered round or not. An alternative for the radio tracking system on the magazine's follower could also be the addition of an electric potentiometer, where there's a strip of electro-conductive material that will vary on how much current is carried by it and a contact on the follower. This is basically the same technology in an analog radio's volume and frequency controls and could feed the information gathered into a computer that could calculate the rounds remaining based on that information. For transmitting this information into the soldier's armor, the gloves of the armor could be lined with electro-conductive plates that match up to the handle scales of the weapon in their hands, like when the plug for a pair of wired headphones is plugged into the appropriate socket, especially when the helmet will probably interface with a similar technology in the collar of the torso armor.

15:54 I always thought e-paper technology to be so cool. Also, it doesn't consume energy with static images, so maybe one could make active camouflage. Not as advanced to become invisible, but good enough for its price.

Electronic parts and 90% of visor are availible for production right now (including the NV function and "friend or foe" marking: it just need some serious neuro-nets working). Electronic polarisation of visor's exterior is to be questioned, though. As for armor plates: it all goes down to actual milirary requests - right now kevlar-based vests are required due to "all ballistic" need of hasard protection, while the ODST's armor plates and BDU are better at withstanding heat-based covenant plasma weapons (and increased heat inside the drop pod if it's forced to pass the dence layers of earth-like planet's atmosphere: basically ODST's are, usually, dropped from low-orbit (just like in Halo 3: ODST - so that the spaceship's hull would take most of planet-entry heat, instead of drop-pods). But it is still possible to be engineered and mass-produced. Low-level xosceletons, added to armor's main frame could strongly improve operator's efficiency: exo would take armor's, ammunition's and weapon's weight, allowing the operator to move like he/she' running naked. So, once again - it IS possible to produce ODST armor nowadays: lt's a question of efficiency and utility, rather than industrial and scientific capabilities. +It's not a question of funding: ODST's are Elite of non-transhuman UNSC forces (compared to US Delta Force or Russian Alpha group Spetsnaz) - you Don't save your money on their equpment: every one of those Elite troopers worth much more, than their equpment.

I always love your videos man. Also yeah the torso and the extremities are the key speaking from experience. I and other soldiers have straight up scavenged unused flame-less ration heaters from discarded US MRE's and lined the inside of our cold weather gear as best we could to stay warm...or at least comfortable enough. I've been in enough very cold environments to say the US Navy SEALs are 100% correct. There is even clothing used by motorcyclists that does some of that.

The reason NVGs display green is because the human eye can discern more shades of green than any other color so there's greater range of contrast.

Your announcement at the end filled me with child like joy I laughed outloud. It literally almost brought a tear to my eye. You are literally making our child hood hero come to life. Your allowing us to be able to be the Spartans we all dreamed of being as kids. God speed man.

Realistic ODST armor would have to be 1/4 of an inch thick and would only need to stop armor piercing 30.06 and deflect all lower caliber rounds in order for it to be practical and worth the money to manufacture. Since we are not dropping individuals from orbit, then the paint/coating in the armor system wouldn't need to be a hear shield. It would instead need to be a thermal reducing paint (something similar to what Intermat Defense makes for vehicles) and the body suit would need to have a Cordura 1000 or 500 fabric to reduce the IR signature of the wearer. There would also need to be a small exoskeleton to redistribute the weight of the armor in order to retain mobility. Running with an additional 60 lbs. of armor and gear with another 40-120 lbs. backpack really slows you down. That is a current Green Beret loadout in terms of weight btw. DARPA already has a protype exo suit that looks very similar to the one seen in the Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow. They are also working with the U.S. Army to make a new combat suit that uses a much smaller version that not only doesn't require any electricity to operate(just physical movement), but also redistributes the weight allowing for faster running. The only real problem with making an ODST armor system is the cost. It would require tens of millions of dollars worth of research alone just to get a protype(without any of the fancy integrated electronics) and it would cost a few million dollars each just to produce. Until there is a cheaper way to refine and forge titanium and its alloys and composites, it is not going to happen for a long time.

While i think we can almost faithfully recreate it, the question is how effective it might be. With any ballistic hit on a hard surface, there's spalling; The bullet shattering on impact and the fragments going places you don't want. In any case you'd be looking at a soft aramid outer layer to catch fragmentation, which will inherently add some bulk to the armor. A second problem i'm seeing is the weight. Modern soldiers already carry 100+ pounds of gear, LMG squads being between 150 to 200 (though the latter is a more extreme case). I don't see an armor like this being adopted widely any time soon, even if we were to recreate it faithfully and modify its weaknesses. It's too complex, there's too many moving and individual parts to it... And the weight, while on it's own manageable, would be compounded with standard operation gear to be over 150 pounds. I can see this being useful in scalpel scenario's, high value target extraction... High level special operations units. And even then, mobility would be a major drawback, even with all the added protection. Probably to the point of being a death sentence. There are definitely some features individually worth looking at though. Temperature regulation being a REALLY big one; Going commando in desert heat wouldn't have to be a requirement anymore, and some active heating in colder climates might not be a bad idea. The other is the composite silica polymer armor weave as a full body penetration resisting suit, with the before-mentioned temperature regulation worked in. That, and lighter composite metal/ceramic armor plating is always a welcome sign. I think those three combined with the new NVG's, aimbot scopes, and a handful of other toys could aid special climate tactical operations. In the end, i really only see this type of armor being deployed as a highly specialized tactical operations addition, for very specific scenario's only. Widespread adoption would be too costly, cumbersome and error-prone. Bear in mind we're talking about the same people that forced PT belts on everyone because one time someone got run over; The equivalent of "someone shat their pants so now everyone needs to wear a diaper.". But again, there's definitely some technologies worth looking at here.

Armor plates can be mixed layers of carbon fiber, kevlar and light layer of titanium using small servo motors connected with a main exoskeleton constructed by DARPA.

Heres the thing about armors in that uh… era. Humanity is generally united… for the most part. So the armor system would need to focus more on chemical, high energy, and hybrid (plasma) weapons, lesser so on physical. Yes, theres still some kinetic munitions like the Needle weapons. But they travel at a low velocity and are considered light projectiles. In this case, soft armor suits to protect from light splash of hybrid, chemical, and slow burn from high energy weapons would be a great asset. Kind of like a Spall liner. The main body armor that uses titanium is best used as the stopping wall of main projectile. Good. Not much is needed, but best to armor everything it can, because its not the main point of the armor. Military grade ceramics is the core of the armor system here. US military grade ceramic body armor plates have a melting point of 2000*C, it should be much higher in the year 2400. But titanium has a melting point about 1700*C. An inline gel you mentioned could be highly heat resistant as well. But itd be best if they were molded in as Trauma pads for impact protection from melee attacks, explosions, ect

I think the helmet instead of it being a lense that changes, it could be a metal armored shield that drops down and it’s also a display like VR, the clear window is the weak point, you can then add integrated targeting and aiming systems also you can have a full field of view like you weren’t wearing a helmet at all. That does exist but would be top shelf custom vr display equal to natural eye which I don’t think exists yet but is possible. Also the cameras and sensors are still way to big for that. Russian titanium 1/4” thick armor I think can stop 30-06 AP rounds which is impressive and could be used on a helmet, composite might be lighter but they deform badly on modern helmets, all the halo helmets I pictured as you probably can’t look through them, would be a pretty heavy helmet but might be able to have to it and the suit in general have power assistants like an bionic xo suit. Love that CE marines has a little eye piece display, realistic that could display you targeting and aim and be a full hud display of everything you need to know

One of the reasons i love Halo lore is that so much of the human tech is so well grounded in proven physics. Most of human tech in Halo is more fictional engineering rather than fictional science

If the military wanted they could purchase mass produced assisted lifting harnesses already in use by warehouses. Its litterally just a bunch of springs attached to an exp skeleton to reduce weights by so many lbs/Kgs

6:36 Dunno which is better for you, but there are quite a few youtube tutorials on how to make shock-absorbing non-newtonian fluids. Some simply uses washing glue, water and borax to thickening it. The name of the video is "Making and testing polymer gel (slime)." Polyurethane is also a great shock absorber (and fire resistant) material, it has a lot of different types and uses, this kind of polymer is even used on the space industry to protect sensible equipment. I mean, maybe it is cheaper/easier to make in your case, and besides, I don't think you would like to be in the other side of that titanium block without some kind of padding/shock absorbing material.

We also have Polymer Ceramic Titanium foam armor already. It's about the same weight as aluminum but about 3-4 times resistant as steel of the same thickness.

Awesome work Sir! Many of the Helmet capabilities currently exist on devices like an ECOTI, the XM157 Optic, and the Integrated Visual Augmentation System, the Army’s new “do-it-all” goggle.

Also, the cooling suites from battletech while driving a battlemech, because the cockpit is already really hot, because the mech is power by a Fusion reactor, so the O.D.S.T. suites are a mix of the two

Your project for your Spartan armor is more accurate to the MK-IV armor due to limited technology, just thought it was a little fun detail to point out, I'm wanting to make thhse now

So I was thinking about how we could like remove the support structure for the helmet, and then I remembered that ODST’s are highly trained to wear this armor and deal with a degree of the temperatures of the initial drop

One thing you forgot to touch on was power supply and ventilation. What would power the suit/helmet systems and what would provide ventilation so that the wearer isn't constantly fogging up the visor via their humid breath, and breathing their own exhalation. And as a side note, I dont think its necessary to make such a suit viable in space, as making it viable on the battlefields we have now would be the best approach. Why? Because who knows, maybe Rathyon or whomever will come knocking on your door for advice haha

I highly, highly suggest you look into the Soviet/Russian Spetsnaz and FSB counter-terror armor developed starting in the '80s and into about the mid-2010s that was meant to maximize protection at all costs since they were only meant to be worn for very short but very intense combat missions that would last at most about 2-3 hours. This is how real titanium helmets like the Altyn, Sfera-T, Rys-T, and Vityaz-T (though the later Altyns and all Rys helmets are actually a titanium-aramid composite) and real steel helmets like the Maska, Sfera-S, and Vityaz-S all came to be. Researching into these heavy and very protective pieces of gear used by the Spetsnaz and FSB counter-terror teams from about 1979 to 2010 would be a great way to learn what does and doesn't work. For instance, learning from the abject failure that was the Sfera helmet would teach you why building a ballistic helmet out of several plates instead of one homogenous plate is generally a terrible idea, as the Sfera's lack of rigidity meant that it couldn't protect against the concussive shock of bullet impacts. There's a guy on KZfaq called Oxide who's made some great videos about the Spetsnaz' and FSB's equipment including all of the helmets mentioned here.

One thing I wanna point out is that when trying to determine what the armour is made out of, it’s being looked at like the armour would he shot at with kinetic rounds. While in the halo universe, it’s primarily plasma based rounds that the ODST’s are going against. i believe the armours made more so with that in mind, how to deal with the heat of the plasma rather than the kinetic force of a physical round

13:20 books say that the smart scoping is pretty much a bluetooth connection between a camera-scope on the gun and the neural implant that every UNSC soldier is required to have. hence why you cant see the lense on the magnum's scope.

Titanium is half the weight but still needs to be thicker than steel. High target areas could be covered. Exoskeleton into the armor would help.

I feel like a heavy suit would work well for swat type roles or room clearing. But not much application on open field combat

I think the EVA systems are the inhibiting factors for creating a real life ODST system. A high altitude drop could be survived by the appropriate tech within the drop pod, leaving the ballistic and heat protection as the only real concerns if we wanted to create ODST’s as soon as possible, along with the necessary VISR tech within the helmet. We still need to progress a ways with space suits before incorporating them into combat uniforms, as someone who used to wear them lol

I had a solution for a built-in ammo counter for a weapon, basically just add onto the bolt carrier mechanism and have it hit a button on the inside when it slams forward chambering a new round, of course said weapon would use a bolt catch because we're in the modern era and not savages, and it'd be simply programmed to return to the max number set once the button is hit after it reaches zero, a simple loop, with simple buttons hidden behind a panel that can be simple slid out of the way for manually programming the amount of rounds you have per mag so you have a reliable and accurate count displayed. You could easily have an added component for it to wirelessly sync with a helmet HUD. And because the programming and actual functionality is ridiculously simple it wouldn't add any bulk or weight to the weapon with the computer components necessary, the bulkiest bit would be the battery pack honestly. Edit: I'd also like to mention, you forgot the part about the visr being able to distinguish friend and foe, this is also simple enough by having IFF chips in the helmets, which would send the signal to the visr system that "hey I'm friendly!" And by default be programmed to mark anyone not with in IFF as hostile, yes that can cause problems if you're around civilians but a human brain and ability to think rationally makes up for that. Another concern one might have is if these ODST'S are around other friendly soldiers from different branches, the simple solution would be for all branches to have IFF chips, whether imbedded into a helmet or the dog tags. Another concern is if an enemy kills a guy and puts on his suit and helmet, this can be countered with having to recite your serial number, rank, name, and a pass phrase, like we see with the Halo Legends episode Prototype, or as we see Chief kind of do when he's- *SPOILER* preparing to delete The Weapon in Halo Infinite's campaign. And basically set it up to disable the IFF and other functions of the helmet if incorrect information is given, or even to prevent any chance of tampering, have it self destruct the systems, fry the components and wipe the software.
