Its so lovely to see this coming to fruition Andy. I chuckled when you brought in the fourth man. I'd been thinking that you needed just one more person as you moved the metal railing before you painted it. What a beautiful job you did on restoring it too. In answer to your question I prefer to see the wood oiled. I know its fashionable to allow wood to grey now that there are all these modern treatments that prevent rot but my old school eye just wants to see it oiled when its grey! How satisfying is it to see the water beading off it like that too? Awesome! A very Happy Christmas to you and your family and friends, God bless and see you in the New Year. 🙏👍🎄🧑‍🎄

I'm thinking about redoing our deck. Thank you for this series. I like the oiled look for the first year or two, but after, I'd let it gray, like me. Lol

Railings look great. I like how you leave in your mistakes and don’t just edit everything out. We all make them and sometimes on these videos they can serve as a warning and help make any followers upcoming jobs easier. I think the weathered wood looks really good on these boards but I always love that oiled look like a piece of bespoke furniture getting some finish applied. It’s always nice to see your family playing or swimming or giving you a hand. Happy holidays to you and yours.

Awesome build, love this series! Had a good laugh when you drilled through the wire. I always tell my wife... its not a real project unless i screw up and have to do something twice!

It's your house, so no issues, but that "extra" circle on the railing was to get the code compliant handrail extension past the bottom step. When the railing stops at the bottom of the steps, without the extension, people with mobility challenges will have a harder time starting and ending their use of the stairs. For able-bodied individuals, it's not an issue, as they rarely are using the handrail for support anyways. Agree that it looks better, but code compliance isn't about how things look, but how they function. Just thought you might like to know why it was built the way it was. Whole project looks awesome! Great project and great series.

I think you got your answer Andy after the rain if you should keep the deck oiled or not. I think the deck looks much better oiled myself, but I guess it's a matter of taste. The deck looks great and was a real labor of love. It's functional and a great place for the family to hang out at night or during the day. I think you should let your children and wife paint the planter box with a base color then they can paint plants, flowers, butterflies, etc to the base coat. Just an idea. Job well done Andy and your assistants. Cheers from this old retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.

I love the new deck but @21:33, you need to fix the stone wall. It is cracking and starts crumbling.

I don't dislike either of the looks between grey or freshly oiled. I think I would do the same as you and go with the oil. It's hard to beat that vibrant grain after the oil.
