• Wi-Fi Access Point Ins...
Hello, and thank you for watching! This project involved installing a ceiling-mount Wi-Fi access point to provide better coverage in a raised ranch style house. During the video, I address tasks such as fishing cable from the garage to attic by leveraging an existing passage for the main sewage stack pipe, (attempted!) fishing cable through a wall, dressing the cable, and mounting the Access point. My techniques were selected based on the tools I had available. Other methods exist which may be more suitable for your installation, such as the use of fiberglass fishing rods, or perhaps routing of the cable inside a closet where only a couple of holes would be needed to make the trip from one level to the next.
I also try to point out some basic common sense and safety tips to keep in mind when performing this type of work to help prevent damage or injury such as the use of safety glasses as well as gloves and masks when handling fiberglass insulation.
I am open to constructive criticism, suggestions for other ways of accomplishing the same tasks, and ideas for other projects, so please let me know your thoughts in the comments. Be sure to check out my other videos as well!
Note - I am not sponsored by any products or companies, so anything used in my videos is by my preference.

You are very comprehensive in your explanation, a super video indeed 😊. I was given some job to install 3 nano stations begining tomorrow and I was wondering whether to have the POE injector close to the nano hd, but now I'm grateful for your video.

Very good video! I just finished pulling Cat6 cables into my attic. It’s a challenge working in the attic for me since it’s like 105F outside plus all the insulation. Next for me is putting in a Ubiquiti AC Nano HD.

Thanks for your video! Installing a nanoHD shortly in my own home, so this was very helpful. Curious why you ran pre-terminated RJ45 instead of terminating the cable after fishing it and passing it through the ceiling.

Thank you for watching, and I am glad it helped. I used preterminated mainly for two reasons. First, I figured I could fish the cable with ends already installed to save some time. Two, I don't own a RJ45 crimper and was feeling cheap and lazy.:)

Good video but one thing to keep in mind is radiation pattern. It can be beneficial in planning which way it points on the ceiling. Some of their APs can vary in signal strength depending on which way it points (not a lot mind you)

Yes, very good point. I chose the location for mine based on getting it central in the house and broadcasting down to get the best coverage.

Def helpful, but I believe locating Ethernet wires less than 12-18 inches from high voltage wires causes more EMI when running parallel . If you have to cross them I would only do it at 90°
@par64guy
@par64guy 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely a good observation. I would expect this is more critical with houses wired with nonmetallic (Romex) cable. Unfortunately, my options for routing the cable were limited, so I had to violate that recommendation. To those reading this who are still in the planning phase, see what you can do to minimize how often your signal cables run parallel to power lines.

I was able to buy a pre-terminated cable that was the right length. Worst case I could have bought RJ45's and and a crimper, but I did not need to in this case. Please watch my follow up video where I corrected a routing error I made in this video which violates electric code.

We are building a new house and I plan to install AP's during the framing, before the drywall goes up, so no need for all the fishing (I hope!). I'm planning ceiling mounted APs in the family room and living room areas downstairs, and another upstairs where the bedrooms are. Any guidelines on how many square feet today's access points should cover comfortably?
@par64guy
@par64guy 2 жыл бұрын
Good move doing the work before the drywall goes up! Regarding placement and number of APs, you can consult the suppliers of the products for guidelines as they typically have different grades of models for the amount of coverage and bandwidth needed. I used Ubiquiti products based on the recommendation of a coworker, and the AP I selected was one I felt would sufficiently cover the raised ranch style house and number of wireless devices. Thus far, it has served me well with four occupants, each with computers, phones, and Wi-Fi connected televisions. The single AP also kept my router relatively simple and inexpensive. Be sure to watch my follow-up video where I corrected a code violation I had committed by running the Ethernet cable in the same cavity as the power cables. Thanks again to the viewer who pointed it out!

I’m trying to terminate a big fat cat 7a+ cable to one of these but it’s too fat to fit in an rj45 connector. How do you do this normally?
@par64guy
@par64guy 3 жыл бұрын
My guess would be you would need an RJ45 designed to terminate CAT7a+. I have only worked with CAT5 and CAT6, so unfortunately I have no experience with CAT7.

With some help from Google Translate, here goes: Comment: In Latin America most of the houses are made of concrete, very little wood. and ready-made structures where they do not want remodeling, passing cable through the same holes is a titanic task, the technicians if you have complications. My reply: I hope that the designers of the structure included some extra holes to allow cables to pass. Mi respuesta: espero que los diseñadores de la estructura incluyan algunos agujeros adicionales para permitir el paso de los cables.

I purchased a new house and there is a cat6 prewired on both first and second floor. The WAP you have on this video is connected via POE, is the POE or injector connected directly to a wireless router? I have a netgear wireless modem/wireless. The builder wants to charge over $1k on 2 ubiquity access point. I checked amazon and these are only $150 a piece. My concern is where would i get the power source to the ubiquity. Thank you

@par64guy 3 жыл бұрын
My AP came with an injector. I plug the injector into the router and the output of the injector to the cable that runs to the AP. I would order the AP's yourself.
@Mr2greys
@Mr2greys 3 жыл бұрын
If you buy a single AP fro Ubiquiti it usually comes with a POE injector. If you buy their bulk I.e discounted 5units they dont but if you pick up one of their small POE switches it ends up cheaper

What "power of ethernet" cable standard is required for a WAP?
@par64guy

Do not fish cabling this way. You should never put AC wiring (the yellow cables are 14AWG for a 20A 120VAC circuit - Romex) and low voltage cabling in the same hole. Also, you cannot put electrical and mechanical in the same hole. In this install, all three are in the same path. This is not safe. There are EMI issues, but it is more than that. In a fire or earthquake, or even just from vibration over time, the pipe can move pressing the cables together potentially shorting out the wires. Running 120VAC from and 20A breaker would cause a lot of trouble and potentially a fire.
@par64guy
@par64guy 3 жыл бұрын
Good catch. I missed that detail when running the cable. I will move the Ethernet cable by drilling another hold near the pipe to force some distance. I will see if I can secure the Romex lines as well.
