Sadly, the old consoles tend to fail a lot more than Slim models, so the best thing to do would be to delid the IHS of both CELL and RSX (If necessary) and repaste both to ensure decent temperatures. I had a PS3 dying due to overheating where one of the capacitors failed. Just make sure to run the console in a rather cool room (about 68°F or lower is more than fine) and you should be good for the most part. For the best PS3 experience while still maintaining CFW support, use an early PS3 slim model (CECH-20xx), but if you wanna have full game compatibility with PS2 games, get a CECH-A01 but that one needs some precautions to run with no issues.

I got a B/C PS3, clean and still sealed, from goodwill. Works fine, fan was a bit loud. I swapped in a 256gb ssd, and first thing I noticed was the fan noise dropped. I think its worth changing just because an ssd will draw less power and run cooler, thereby lowering system temperature. It may not improve system data speed, but its still better than the ancient original hdd.

I recently bought myself a backwards compatible model and I'll definitely be upgrading the hard drive to an SSD soon. Not only is it faster but it won't run as hot since SSDs have no moving parts! I'll get the same one you got! I didn't know you could get a 1TB for that cheap!
@wdunn06

Hey man. First time watching one of your videos. I enjoyed it. I've took many of these apart and delidded more than I can count. My advice would be download and install webman so you can view the temperatures and control the fan. I would open the console sooner rather than later to give it a deep clean and at least replace the thermal paste above the IHS plates. If you decide to delid the cell & rsx just do plenty of research and practice on some dead boards. That's how I learned. I recommend using 0.08mm molybdenum wire instead of the painters knife technique. Take care

Are you a repairman? My PS3 Super Slim started this high frequency, whisper-like noise when it's turned off, about a month ago. I've run the game to test it, and it worked fine. I've read on the internet that some people with similar problem had burning plastic smell also. So i've been keeping it unplugged, ever since, as i am not comfortable keeping it plugged in. I've plugged it in a few minutes ago, to test if the noise was gone, it sounded like cartoon fall noise kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h82oYLqA056ndHU.html , i unplugged it immediately. My guess is that the power supply is dying. Have you encountered with this, is it safe to use PS3?

I was about to make this point lol🤣 SSDs do not give ps3s perfermance boosts. The best you can do to atleast get a better download speed and upload / maybe slight enhanced loading in game speed would be a hybrid sata HDD. I currently have a 1.5 TB sata hybrid drive and it's amazing 😅.

Btw the PS3 can only take 1.6 TB of internal storage. One can find old SATA 1 SSD 1.6 TB hard drives on Amazon, but you would have a steep price to pay. They work extremely well but the PS3 is also known as a hard drive/ssd killer so be careful.

@@sonyx5332 not exactly true as stated above... The PS3 is limited and only a sata 1 type drive will help you achieve this. I own a SATA 1 hybrid drive on my PS3 and it is actually much better then a SSD as I've tried many SSDs and most are above the SATA 1 connection so there is no real benefit. Matter of fact having any SATA 2 or SATA 3 hard drive or SSD . Cool video. I upgraded a 40gb to a much bigger HDD few years back. Only issue with PS3 is it’s been dead for years. Can’t even sign in. Don’t know if that’s just mine for some reason. I never messed with it like jailbreaks or anything. Still it’s great for playing old single player games and playing blue Rays. I think the 360 has aged better just because Xbox is more user friendly when upgrading. I think Sonys approach to storage though does create more options. You can stick pretty much anything in. 👍 I upgraded a PSP storage to use as an MP3 as well.

It helps to a certain degree however if you were worth to downgrade to SATA 1 hybrid HDD with some SSD compatibility the PS3 is much faster then the SSD as the PS3 has a SATA 1 connector. So anything above give it no real benefit yes you'll see faster upload and download times and some faster performance, however in a couple of months you won't be saying that when the SSD dies or starts to get slower as the PS3 is a HDD and SSD killer . I've upgraded PS3s and PS4s with SSDs and the speed difference was negligible. This unfortunately is to be expected, because PS3s and PS4s all use internal SATA bridges which bottleneck performance to a little faster than the performance of a 2.5" SATA HDD. In the PS3 a PATA-to-SATA bridge is used and in the PS4 and PS4 Pro a USB-to-SATA bridge is used! No matter how fast the drive is that you use, it cannot be used any faster than the limits of the internal bridges that Sony used for these consoles. Thankfully Sony put this madness behind them with the PS5, finally providing it with massive storage performance for both the soldered-in SSD and the internal NVMe upgrade option.

@@beardymcbeardface69 I have seen people record faster speeds and make games such as driving in day z from unplayable to playable . I thought PS4 used sata 2 and going from 140mb/s to around 300mb/s. Also digital foundry recorded many improvements

@@wrusst Yes faster speeds are achievable, but not _significantly_ faster. Only up to the performance limit of the SATA bridges used. There's two sides to those bridges, the drive side (PATA for PS3 and USB for PS4) and then the PS3/PS4 internals side. The performance limit of that bridge IC is the limiting factor.

Ps3s can't utilise the full speed of ssds, they do make a small difference but don't expect to get the performance the drive states.
@beardymcbeardface69
@beardymcbeardface69 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. PS3's internally use a 1.5Gbps PATA-to-SATA bridge to provide internal SATA connectivity, bottlenecking transfer rates to around 180 Mbytes/second. Which is *_WAY_* slower than the 500Mbytes/second read and write performance of a SATA SSD.

You should definitely tear this console down and change thermal grease to be sure it won't be overheated
@Jaze2022

I just got a ps3 myself! From what I understand, you should definitely tear it down and replace the thermal compound and thermal pads at a minimum. Then up the min fan speeds. I can feel the heat pouring out of mine after a few minutes of turning on. That's why these fat ps3 dies! Don't let yours die!
@pathfindercast

That's awesome. I agree that I should do the teardown maintenance on it. Maybe in a future video. If the heat is blowing out of the back then I think that is a positive sign that the cooling is working properly. These cell processors heat up and the key is the get the heat out as fast as possible. If you weren't getting a lot of heat escaping then I would start to worry that the thermal paste is making poor contact.

Actually I don't recommend using cheap SSD despite it won't be heavy loaded, in about 2-3 years they tend to have a lot of "green" blocks with access time about 1.5 seconds which may cause real slowdowns which is really bad for either games or OS. Well at least this is from my experience, I have a lot of Adata SU650.

Just need to make certain the SSD has TRIM built-in. Usually have to pay a little more than that. The PS3 doesn't do any TRIM, so an SSD may not last very long. Also, keep in mind the PS3 uses SATA II, so at best a SATA III SSD will only be used at half it's bandwidth, which may not be much faster than a hard disk.
@PietroSoft

An SSD even on Sata 2 destroys a common hard drive on speed. I used my first SSD with a PC that only had Sata 2 ports. And, yeah TRIM is very important.

when the video started i thought to myself "an SSD would have no effect whatsoever on the performance, nearly all PS3 games run directly from the BluRay disc" but then you said you're going to jailbreak the PS3 and it all made sense lol, yeah the original HDD in all PS3's was a cheapo laptop grade 5200rpm HDD, even reading from the BluRay disc was faster than reading from the HDD on PS3's. however i'd never buy any of these cheap Chinese SSD's. they are unreliable and WILL break on you when you least expect it. i'd go with a Crucial/Samsung/Kingston SSD everyday over any of these horrible unreliable Chinese SSD's.
