Hello.
Having installed a diesel heater into my campervan, and being very impressed with the heat output, I thought I would install one into my house, well on the side of the house. I purchased a Chinese diesel heater as opposed the the Eberspacher which is installed in the van based on the considerably lower cost. I opted for the all in one type complete with the 5ltr fuel tank.
I assembled and tested it first in the garage before cutting a 80mm hole on the outside wall of my house, so as I could feed the warmed air into my lounge.
In my case I purchased and needed to drill a 80mm hole, although the ducting pipe is only 75mm but at 75mm it would have been too tight to manoeuvre the piping through the wall. I sealed the additional 5mm with silicon.
I needed to extend the cabling for the 12v power supply and the LCD monitor, and buy an additional vent, which had the ability to be closed off, for the lounge and a 240v to 12v DC transformer.
The build was actually really easy and enjoyable. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to drop me a comment.

Hi Roy ive been heating my 2 bedroom house since last year on one of these and keeping warm as toast 😊😊 average heating cost work out at £13.75 per week bearing in mind i spend most of my time at home because of my disabilities'......I PAY £1.10 Per litre of kerosene and normally my gas standing charges are twice the amount ive used in gas

Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my video. I am very happy with mine, other than the diesel/kerosene smell upon start up and shut down. I have been buying my kerosene by the 40ltrs from Rye oils at 0.85p per litre, they have a self serve pump so cheaper than paying for delivery. It's certainly cheaper than running my central heating. I see from watching KZfaq their are a number of people looking to incorporate these into houses as opposed to just vans and workshops.

I had a similar experience with the diesel smell, and I worked out it was the air intake pulling in the exhaust fumes at the start up. I extended my air intake far away from the exhaust, this solved the problem. When I say the air intake I mean the cold air running from the right hand side of the unit, not the air intake under the unit.

Hello Thanks for viewing my video and commenting. I like your idea although I did try adding a bit of Ducting from the heater air intake itself through the box and out, so as to isolate any stale air in the box being sucked in but that made no difference either. My mate has the same set up as mine but does not experience the same problem. My exhaust is pointing in the opposite direction to the air intake too. Its a very strong smell only upon initial start for about 10 seconds then clears once the heater starts burning the fuel.

Thanks for sharing; this is a really cool build. Inspiring! I think i may try something just like this. I work for a commercial signage company and have become the resource recovery specialist lately. I've implimented policies to keep mercury from old neon out of our ground water and gotten everybody on board with recycling wire. we fill a big bin with wire every other month. Next i've got my sights set on tackling our plastic waste stream. I'm building a grinder to granulate the old sheets of acrylic we remove during sign refurbishment, and deal with the all the fresh plastic waste coming off our cnc router table. My goal is to pyrolyze the plastic into diesel. I doubt the boss will let me feed it into his trucks, but i did trick him into getting a shipping container to use as a field office, and it's been getting chilly now that it's winter... We have a small mountain of dead signs in the back lot that has been accumulating since 1945, that needs to be mined for resources and cleaned up.

Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting. It will certainly help warm your office. I would like to recycle old cooking oul into diesel but I don't really have to room to set it all up. Your contribution to recycling is greatly appreciated though.

The smell is unburnt fuel. When you run it on low for so long it will do that. Try running it on high setting for 15 minutes before shutting down and you will clean all the carbon for next start up.

Hello. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Yes unfortunately I have tried as you suggested. I am of the opinion it's a fault in the machining process, and am going to replace the gaskets only this time use Silicon to create a better seal. As in theory even if some unburnt fuel is left its smell etc should just be expelled through the exhaust as this should be a sealed chamber.

Nice setup , I found the same smell of diesel which I suspected was coming from the fuel tank vent. When filling tank no matter how careful I was also smell of diesel for awhile. Modified the cap and fitted a section of the green fuel hose so as to vent outside box. I also fitted a bigger fuel tank , 15 litres, got fed up with filling every 2/3 days. Now filling once per week.

Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting. That's an interesting point re the filler cap, I will investigate and try your potential cure. Yes the fuel tank is definitely too small, if I was to do it again I would do away with the metal housing so I could incorporate a larger fuel tank.
@royclark8385

Tried as you suggested regarding the green pipe used as an extension to the fuel tank breather, sadly it did not cure it, so alasI must continue my search.
@martint1151
@martint1151 5 ай бұрын
Pity that didn't solve your problem, only other thing I can think off ( other than moving fuel tank ) is if your unit came with the green fuel hose from tank via pump to Burner module, it is known to be unsuitable for diesel and can permeate fuel through the plastic . Try with your hand and see if any traces of diesel around the green hose. Others have replaced this hose for the white nylon hose.
@royclark8385
@royclark8385 5 ай бұрын
@martint1151 sadly I have already replaced the green hose with the white type. I think I may have to resort to relocating the tank. But first I want to strip it down again and use heat resistant Silicon when renew the gaskets as I think the mating surfaces may be an issue, cheaply manufactured.

These heaters are also available with seperate tank of 15lt which means less refilling. I installed my heater inside with a pipe through the wall to the tank outside so keeps everything clean. Easy to set up and keeps my workshop 4m x 6m toasty warm. On low setting which is more than enough the fuel useage is 1ltr / 5hr.

Hello. Thanks for viewing and commenting. Yes that is my only downside is the smaller fuel tank, unfortunately due to the size of my box it is housed in, I am limited on space to fit a larger fuel tank.

You may have an exhaust problem. At first, I 'elbowed' my exhaust immediatley as it left the unit, but after a few days it BLOWTORCHED it's way through. Now I have a 2 foot drop before the elbow, and a mesh cover to protect the pipe.

I’m doing the same however finding it hard to find a 75mm open close vent for the inside wall as the official ones all have a 75mm diameter but then step up to a 90mm meaning I will need to drill around a 90mm hole. I wanted to keep the hole smaller around 75mm the only ones available with a straight 75mm are the cheap Amazon / EBay ones which melt. Did you drill a 90mm hole for that white Webasto one??
@royclark8385
@royclark8385 4 ай бұрын
Hello. I can appreciate your dilemma, I drilled initially a 80mm hole into my wall, which I am glad I did as a 75mm would have made pulling the 75mm pipe through very difficult. I did initially buy the cheap one from ebay, which melted.. so bought a 75mm one online, but as you say it requires a 90mm hole to fit flush against the wall. I did not want to drill a bigger hole so, whilst mine fits the heating pipe snug it does protrude off the wall by about 1cm, which when looking directly on is not noticeable but is when looking from above.

well done matey, ive been thinking of this since the energy crisis, i have one that i installed in my vw camper, the one for the house will exhaust through my log burner hot plate i have designed, never had a derv smell on my camper though....i worked it out to use 1ltr for 8 hours cont....so £1.40 pr 8 hours......thats too hot for humans..s probably cheaper once its thermostat kicks in at 23C...for easier access and refilling i have a outboard tank with quick release ....so i can take the whole tank to the pstation to fill it. .theres a scottish fella on ytube called david Mcluckie he has coverted one to self power itself....hes a tad disturbed....but the best guys normally are

Hello Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. I believe my issue is either a fault in the machining of the unit, which I hope to overcome by replacing the gaskets again, only this time using heat resistant Silicon to form a better seal, and also separating the fuel tank from the housing and relocating it away from the unit, as opposed to ontop currently. Maybe down the side of my garage. I have a eberspacher d2 fitted in my transit camper and it emits no smell what's so ever..

Hello. Thanks for your comment. You can run the air intake from inside the building, I do in my garage set up, but two things you want to consider, 1 that if you get a blow back inside the burn chamber (its rare but can happen) the combustion (smoke) will often exit via the air intake, so you will have a room smelling of diesel and full of smoke, 2nd the process of combustion works more efficiently with higher humidity (damp air), whereas the air indoors does not contain the same humidity and is often dryer. If possible I would recommend having the air intake outside.

Great video, just wondering does this solely heat one room or do you leave the doors open to heat the whole floor? Also what teperature difference to you get from the outside to the inside when you have this turned on? Thanks

Hello, thanks for taking the time to view and comment. Being located in the lounge I do need to leave the lounge door open for it to heat more rooms in the house, as the lounge door is adjacent to the stairs to the first floor the heat does travel well upstairs, you can feel the heat as you leave a bedroom and decent the stairs. I have found with the lounge door closed the heater on full will bring the temperature up by 1 degree centergrade in 10 mins, but this is dependent on the size of the room. Once the .room is up to temperature I open the lounge door a little and allow the heat to travel further throughout the house. As for indoor and outdoor temperatures it solely depends on how high you set the temperature, I have a very warm lounge in particular than that of the temperature outside.

@@royclark8385 thanks for the quick response. I'm thinking of installing one so that the duct feeds into my entrance hall and allows the warm air to circulate the communal spaces. My house was built in the 1930's and the temperature first thing in the morning is about 13C downstairs. So I'm wondering if this will be a good supplementary source of heat. Let's see. Also on a seperate note, you mentioned the diesel smell. I could be totally wrong but could this be due to too much fuel being pumped, therefore there is unburnt fuel in the main chamber. If this is the case then maybe the pump speed needs to be reduced on whichever setting level is causing the smell?

Hi. I have a similar setup, although i installed everything into an electrical panel and monted on the wall of my driveway, and i have an external tank for ease refuling and or tank swapping. With regards to the fuel smell on start up. I'd route your exhaust further away. Initial startup you get un burnt fuel emmitied briefly. Also, this means you may be drawing combustion products in when it's up and running. I routed a 25mm metal Conduit nearly 4 meters away from my fresh air inlet. I don't get any smells inside the house at all. Also i trust you have carbon monoxide inside local to your hot air inlet.

Thanks for your thought re the diesel smell, I have tried different pump settings but to no avail. Considering its a sealed unit and no smell should be present as it all contained in the burn chamber, and any diesel residues should only be expelled via the exhaust, I am now thinking its a casing issue, as they are mass produced finesse is not a high priority, my eberspacher does not suffer the same problem. I think I am going to replace the gaskets again only use heat resistant Silicon on them too to hopefully form a better seal

Hello. Thanks for viewing my video and commenting. I like your way of thinking although my exhaust fumes are exiting in the opposite direction from my air intake. I would have thought the diesel fumes would have filtered out way before they (if at all) reach the air intake. But its definitely worth considering. Yes I have a carbon monoxide alarm situated above the warm air outlet plus another one at the top of my stairs on the first floor. I should have added that into my video.

Hello. Thanks for viewing and suggesting a possible cause. The exhaust is directed out the opposite end of the box to the air intake, I have subsequently moved the tank 5 meters away from the unit, but still getting smell upon start up, not so on shut down if I run it on high for 10mins before shutting down. I believe its a manufacturing fault in that the gasket for the burn chamber is not sealing correctly, so come the summer I will strip it down and reseal the chamber using new gaskets and heat mate Silicon to create a better seal.
