Roger needed a new chain and sprockets, and nothing but the BEST for my boy, so he gets a superb high class DID 525VX3 Golden Chain from Hitchcocks.

How do you know when to replace the sprocket? Or is it the case of you might aswell replace it if your going to replace the chain?
@restdayrider
@restdayrider Жыл бұрын
You can inspect the rear sprocket when you service / clean the chain, but apparently I've been told the front sprocket wears faster as it takes more of the force. Depends on your bike and how or what sort of riding you do too I suspect, but should be easy enough to remove the cover and inspect the front sprocket. I'm sure some of my followers will be able to explain better and more technically!

Look for damaged teeth, or worn teeth if you fit a chain to worn socket the chain will not last as long, the old sprockets will damage new chains...

Next time your mechanics try fitting the soft link in your chain tell them to do it with the chain ends on the rear sprocket, sooo much easier 😉👍. . Glad you went for chain AND sprockets in the end the correct decision 👍👍

Hi Charlie, always a good idea to change the sprockets when changing the chain, worn sprockets will soon take out a new chain ! I didn't see you apply chain lube to the new chain ? It will soon disperse any lubricant it came packed in, get some lube on it if you want it to last. About 3 years ago I invested in a cheap (about £50) rattle (impact) gun which makes removing sprocket nuts & the likes so easy !

X-rings are a modern development of the O-ring and give better overall performance. Normally used for high performance bikes, and serious off road…enduro and Moto-cross. For most bikes, a well maintained ‘O’ ring chain should be adequate.

The engine sprocket, being much smaller, wears out twice as fast as the rear sprocket. Correct chain tension is essential to ensure the bearing on the output main shaft is not "loaded". Replacement of that bearing is expensive. Oil the chain with EP80 gear oil which you can apply with a one half inch paint briush.

@@restdayrider I'm sure you did a great job, I was joking a bit but I was a bit serious. Often it is obvious to recognize a new part from an old one to be discarded, but sometimes this is not the case. For example o-rings or crush washers. As a good practice, as already mentioned, keep the parts separate and immediately put away the parts to be discarded. In this way, at the end of the job, there won't be any suspicious parts left on some banch or on the floor that could give rise to doubts: did I forget to reassemble this? Ciao ;)

@SteveInskip
@SteveInskip Жыл бұрын
Hi Alan. There’s a few parts to a chain, pins, rollers, o-rings, inner links and outer links. The o-rings keep grease sealed between the pins and rollers during manufacture and it should stay there for the life of the chain, if it’s a decent chain. The O-rings also prevent ingress of water to the pins, so they keep the grease in and liquids out. They don’t do anything else. The rollers contact the sprockets and should be greased to prevent wear between those surfaces. You don’t need to grease all the links. It’ll find its way round quite quickly on rotation. The outer and inner links need to rotate against each other, if you don’t clean and lubricate them they can become tight and seize. Some light oil like 3in1 between the links is a very good idea after cleaning. I use de-greasing spray to clean between the links and Gunk with a decent brush for general de-greasing of the rollers. You can’t beat a 5 litre can of Gunk in your garage (careful of that stuff on a tarmac drive though). And you need to check the chain for adjustment after each clean. I usually like about 1/4” to 3/8” inch of slack on the return side, the bottom middle section. Finally a chain-oilers are a good idea if you want to extend your chain life but find it difficult to clean regularly or if you do long road trips, but they don’t replace regular maintenance.
