How to install a foam backed vinyl headliner in a boat will give you all the steps needed to remove an old headliner and prepare the surface for new foam backed headliner installation. Using a 3M General Trim Adhesive spay glue we will glue the foam backed headliner in place and finish off the project with wood trim strips to give a truly beautiful finished look. This video will also touch briefly on how to reinstall the Genoa / Jib sail track.

Actually, putting a box fan as an 'exhaust fan' on top of one of the hatches will work wonders for keeping the fumes and dust down. This is a great video. I really do NOT look forward to replacing the headliner in my boat, but when it needs to be done, it will definitely be easier with help from this sailrite video.

Silicone and no chamfered or counter sunk holes will cause core rot, a lot harder to fix than new head liner. But the replacing of the head liner was very informative.

Perforated vs non-perforated is just a style, so both are almost equal. Some say the perforated may breath better.

great video for installing this stuff! We have this on the sides of our hull and want to renew it. the problem is we also have ports in the hull (morgan out island) How do you trim around the ports so that you have a finished edge?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Pierre Mitham Hopefully the ports have a trim that can be unscrewed and the headliner edge can be hidden under the trim. If not a clean cut edge with a brand new razor is the only other suggestion I have.

Yes, you are correct silicone is not the best bedding application. Instead use Trimmable Butyl Tape: www.sailrite.com/Trimmable-Butyl-Tape-3-4

Well done video overall, I found it quite informative thank you. I am surprised at the lack of breathing and eye protection during the sanding and scraping though, and no doubt the glue spray is bad for your lungs. And the use of silicone on the genoa track with no surface preparation is not good; silicone should not be used on boats unless it is needed to bond certain types of plastic that call for it specifically.

I need to replace a cabin headlining and there are lots of curves and quite large. Does the headling stretch and how long do you have to maneuver the healing into place before the glue dries. I made a new main cabin mattress and the foam glue seemed to dry quite quickly so am worried I would not have enough time to place it correctly before it dried? I also have 2 portholes in the cabin?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 7 жыл бұрын
The vinyl headliner with foam backing is not very shape conforming (it will not stretch much at all). You may want to consider HullBlanket Headliner Hull Liner instead it is more shape conforming. www.sailrite.com/Marine-Fabric-Use/Headliners--AND--Hull-Liners/type/Products?keywords=carpet%20style%20headliner Using 3M General Trim Adhesive you have about 15-20 minutes to apply the headliner, if it dries too quickly and your application is not yet in place simply apply more glue to the area that has not yet been adhered and keep going.

@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Ricardo Amaro I think it (perforated vinyl over foam) is simply a desired look over the vinyl headliner with foam that does not have the perforated holes. However, some believe that it provides better breathability, if it gets wet.

Would you use this same material for lining the ceiling of a head/shower room?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 10 жыл бұрын
Jim and I did use a vinyl headliner with a foam backing in our head which does have a shower. We think that the perforated vinyl headliner with foam would work also. Hopefully, no one will blast the headline with water and thus soak the foam, but we do not think moisture will be much of an issue.
@theyard6958
@theyard6958 7 ай бұрын
I would advise against any covered foam in a wet head. I would only apply it directly to the ceiling. When, (not if) the foam gets damp or even full on wet, it is very hard to get it to dry. It will mold and then you will be back to square one. if you have a large vessel with a separate shower in the head, the rest of the head should be safe as long as you use proper ventilation. I understand that this is an old thread but I also know it will still be seen, and hopefully it helps someone. Shipwright / Marine carpenter/ 50m Yacht builder

Can the headliner material be used on the hull? Will the roughness of the fiberglass show through?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but even the foam backed headliner may show inconsistencies on the wall. If the roughness is consistent, it will not be a big deal, but if is random, it may show up. Carpet style headliner hides more than foam back headliner.

As a shipwright / marine finish carpenter. We use commercial grade Contact cement in large propane like tanks with what looks like a spray paint gun and hose. The only thing that I would do different and maybe because the yachts we build are high end vessels, but always protect everything around before spraying. you cannot remove glue from many types of material, and some materials will stain if remover is applied and rubbed. Be proactive and save yourself or your customers money and time. aside from that Sailright is a great product, I use it on my own sailboat, and I recommend it. I forgot to also mention that the contact cement is very harmful to you, and extremely flammable, so keep it of your skin, wear a respirator, and ventilate the cabin during the process to avoid a potentially explosive situation.

recently removed all the headlining out my jeanneau, i used polycarbide abrasive discs on the GRP to remove all old glue and foam (they dont damage the giberglass but creat loads of dust). BUT i used goggles, gloves and mask (not a dust mask more a chemical type mask), occasionally i dont use a mask when drilling the boats fiberglass or laying fiberglass but shocked in the video they arent using a mask to remove the old carcinogenic headlining or spray adhesive. I have use it on brand new 45 million dollar yachts, fishing vessels, Coast Guard, and Naval vessels, and so many other boats. and it does hold. It's much better to mask up all wood and good trim and there should be a extraction fan for the volatile spray fumes especially if there is a shore power lead connected with the battery charger on you should ware a mask buddy. Aside from some questionable health/safety issues depicted, I would think there might be better solutions to installing this type of headliner, keeping in mind I'm not a professional at doing so. You can try masking the areas where you don't want adhesive so that you don't have to waste brain cells, time & materials cleaning up solvent-laden glue with more solvent. You could also try rolling up the material and applying glue to only the first 12". Then align the piece without trying to press the entire section into place at once which is somewhat haphazard. Spray a small section at a time, unrolling the vinyl as you go, keeping in mind the necessary wait time before unrolling. Another method is to do it all outside of the boat on a thin backing such as plywood. If too large to fit through the companionway, it can be done in smaller sections trimming the edges with teak or similar.
