I wouldn't give Carson too hard a time. Optimism and financial conservatism are a powerful tag-team, especially when costs are piling up. Sometimes *when* the money is spent matters more than the end total. And sometimes we have to let a friend learn the hard way -- and this particular lesson is better learned on a garage than a house :)

Great video, Shawn! As for Carson, he is EXTREMELY frustrating. He had 2 shots at taking great advice from a PRO and failed both times. And if he can call buying a huge plot of land and building on it a "learning experience", then shame on him for being cheap when it comes to things like 'more gravel' and 'PVC fittings'.

I can appreciate Carson's hardhead-ness, I think a lot of us are that way. I can see me doing the 4" lines dropping in the catch basin like Carson did, to save some money. Appreciate the lessons learned this one gives us all, though I feel bad for Carson as they are at his expense.

No offense to Carson but you, Sir, are an expert and fountain of knowledge in regards drainage and how to solve flooding issues... To push back, disagree, even put his foot down on what HE wants, to me, is foolish. I've watched your videos, as you've posted em, for a few years (& binged everything prior several times over). While I've learnt a lot from watching them I KNOW my limitations and if I'd have you in to do a job I'd give you free reign and let you decide on what to do and where the pipes (basins) go. But, as they say "The customer is always right!" (Even when they're not).

1) sort your drainage needs before building. 2) as soon as you catch water, you have to deal with it- don't catch it you don't have to! 3) each system needs its own pipes.

Sean, tip for next time from an excavator operator: Next time you need to dig next to a building and slope a swale, use the grading bucket on the mini ex. All minis come with a built in 15* tilt bucket. Abandon the usual practice of having your blade in front or behind, and dig over the side: Position the blade facing the building, center over your ditch, then lower the blade all the way. It’ll tip your machine away from the building, putting your cutting edge at the angle you were looking for. 😎

Aside from doing that massive french drain. Dig a trench along his foundation. Clean it off, drill holes all along it, epoxy 10 penny nails, build a form to make a 4 inch concrete curb against the buildling..

Regarding the catch basin. I immediately thought of "Part 1 of 4 The worst Apt. flooding I've ever seen". That is pretty close to the house I'd say. And you sent the water through the appartment too. Lol!

Amen to don't catch it if you don't have to. Here at my mother in laws house, the back extension used to flood. Her parents who built the house were avid gardeners. They built flower beds and put in brick paths and at one time it looked beautiful. The problem is the flow of water is from West to East. West being up hill and East being down. The front of the house faces North and the back faces South. So there was water coming from uphill hitting the West side of the house and flowing to the South end of the house and then across the back yard. Right where all there lovely work put up barriers to the water. It ended up forcing water into the South room of the house. After the wife and I moved up here to take care of the mother in law, one of the first things I did with the new tractor is to tear up the flower beds, brick paths and regrade the back yard away from the house. For once not having gutters on the West side of the house was a blessing. 30 years of water running off created its own trench that flows South to the back yard. With the new grading the water sheds South past the house before turning East and continuing down the hill.

NDS part # 2411 or # 2412 24"x24" square grate with 1/2 head has a flow rate of 708.77 GPM, NDS part # 2410 2nd ring is rated for 1457.67 GPM, though I think it'd be closer to 532.62 GPM, an 8 inch pipe installed at a self-cleaning .347% slope can move 470 GPM, an 8 inch pipe installed at 1% slope can move 833 GPM, an 8 inch pipe installed at 2% slope can move 1211 GPM... I guess the math plays out though I'd want more intake.

He knows you're not going to just try to have him spend his money on something unnecessary, but try to save him time and money in the long run by doing it right the first time. Well, I empathise with your predicament Shawn. I think Carson just got too obsessed with those lakes, ponds, ducks, geese, who knows what. The catch basin is what will mess things up.. I would of just ran a French drain all the way through.

A 4"-6" curb on the slab would have helped then frame on top of that.

I noticed you used fabric on the bottom of the drain but not on top before a final layer of gravel. Will silt wash into the system over time?

It looks like the gravel is too fine to allow good water flow. Needs to be 1 inch gravel for any reasonable water flow/ catchment and larger holes in the pipes to Maximise water flow. Cheers Steve Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

The thing about a problem: you can do it right going in or pay a whole lot of money correcting what you should have done right in the first place. Either way, you're going to spend the money. It's up to you how much of it and time you're willing to waste.

I’d built a berm myself. Making sure the water doesn’t get to the problem area is preferable to piping it out after it got there. But hey, not my house, not my say.

Did the two 6" pipes tying into the catch basin have perforations to accept the water?

So what was his problem with a small berm around the backside of the shop and routing the water into a catch basin farther away from the shop, seem like he was come hell or high water he was going to have a french drain. [lol]

If your drainage system fails to cope with your water runoff issues try doing what Gate City Foundation Drainage told you to do in the first place. 😂

Looks like that 8" pipe has no more holes than the usual 4" pipe. Shouldn't it have more holes to catch more ater?
