The backing plate could be aluminum instead of steel so there’s less corrosion.

the holes dont line up because there different shapes causing a coolant leak in between the pump and the cam cover

in your opinion, would it be easier to replace the timing cover when replacing the water pump? im asking because i also have a leak i believe is in the water pump but i dont want to do it twice

I would suggest doing it. Could certainly save you time and headache.

How can I tell if my water pump is leaking cause I misaligned the backing plate bolts on the timing cover or if my timing cover gasket is gone

Best way would be to get underneath with a bright flashlight and look up under the waterpump

Man im currently having coolant probably but ive found out that my radiator has tao small leaks or maybe more one leak i put rtv the other one is covered by the fan cover so im only able to hear it but not see it

Also my water pump i dont think it has been changed for a long time could probably need to get a new one

Yea, pretty common problems. Replace radiator and waterpump.

It wasn’t too bad considering the fluid was BLACK, and the thermostat was corroded into the housing. I removed about 2.5-3” of sedement/ sludge from the over flow. I don’t think the coolant has ever been flushed or changed. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m dropping in a new radiator and all new hoses, thermostat and housing. The headset core seemed to have flushed out nice🙄 the only thing that I’m unsure on is how to install/fill this radiator. It is a fluidyne capless / sealed rad. Any ideas?

@@jakeb593 it just has the stock overflow bottle. The one that hangs on the side of the radiator shroud and has the coolant sensor attached to a straw

Did u ever figure it out. I got 90 gt put ne water pump on and it still leaks.

Yes, the head bolts on the backing plate were too thick and didn't let the pump mount flush against the motor

Actually, your leak wasn’t coming from the water pump. Replacing it was a waste of time. Your leak was coming from the timing chain cover gasket that had failed behind the pump. Very common problem with these fox body mustangs. The repair includes completely removing the timing chain cover after removing the water pump. Involves removing the harmonic balancer as well. Doable, with the right tools. And a suggestion for next time. When you pull the water pump bolts out, make some kind of note as to which hole they came out of. They are all different sizes.
