Rainchains are a beautiful water feature that add both good looks and soothing sounds to the garden. But before you add one, you need a plan for where the water will go during rainfall. Without good drainage, you’ll have water where you want it least, like in your basement. A simple diy dry creek bed is a practical and beautiful solution.
Here are the links to the products I used to make my rain chain water feature...

Hi there! My name is Heather and I garden in zone 5b in the southwest suburbs of Chicago on a small residential lot. My garden lives a whole lot larger than it is and I love sharing tips and tricks, as well as plenty of mistakes, with others who love to play in the dirt.

Nicely demonstrated! A positive reason to use rain chains and anti-pooling methods is that mosquitos will not have an environment to proliferate. I'm hoping that in future videos you might encourage your listeners to consider using drainage pipes that are linear, not spiral/corrugated, so mosquito breeding is deterred. Thanks again.

Heather, you did a beautiful job! We recently installed a rain chain and I love it. Love to sit and watch the rain while having my breakfast. Now working on the dry creek bed. So much fun eh. Thanks for an awesome video. Jeannie Nova Scotia Canada.

I also have a rain chain at our front entrance. They are beautiful and relaxing to watch on our front porch when it’s raining. I learned that these are common in Japan. Currently my water is being captured in a large water basin but I really like your idea and I am going to give that a try with the dry rock creek! Thank you for showing this video , you did a lovely job😀

@@heatherhereshegrows - Yes and rain barrels. Figuring out ways to keep more water on my property in the right places. I'm adding gutters, rain barrels, rain chains and making changes to existing gutters and down spouts. Didn't think of a dry creek before now, so that idea is super helpful! I am having a landscape designer come next month to help me with some other things, and I will ask her about some of these things as well.

Hi Heather 😊 Leave it to you .. Fantastic and Inspiring! I personally didn't realize those were rain chains. I saw one at The Growing Place that caught my eye in passing. It was umbrellas. I may get, but just to hang, as I cannot do as you since I live in an Association. I love your trellis you guys put up 👍! I tried emailing you a question the other day, but for whatever reason, it would not send through 🤷‍♀️. Enjoy your beautiful display of garden and works! 🥰 hugs

Very pretty and a great workout, too! I'm posting this Aug. '22. I wondered if you'd get the drainage you were looking for with the permeable fabric beneath the rocks. Maybe the grade from the porch to the yard is more than it appears in the video? I'd have thought impermeable for a few feet to get it away from the porch and them permeable. How has it worked for you?

Hi! I love this video and just got back from HD with my supplies to create the same thing for my two rain chains. I'm very excited about this project. You made it very simple and explained every step perfectly. My big question is where did you find the 'blue chip stone' that you used for the edges? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!!

Hi there! I found it at Melka Landscape supply in Orland Park, IL. You’re going to love the rain chains! I so look forward to rain even more now that I have it.

I LOVE this project! And I love your channel! ❤️ Rain chain is very common in Japan, where I am from. I always wonder why I don't see many here in US. I assumed because many homes here have basement, and rain could affect it? I do have a question about that though. Would it be enough to put down the fabric and rocks? Wouldn't water still goes down directly to the foundation? I was expecting you to use rubber membrane for a river or something like that so that the water goes out further. Thoughts?
@heatherhereshegrows
@heatherhereshegrows 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think they’re underused too, not sure why. Great question about the rubber membrane. Before I did my research, I assumed I’d need a rubber membrane but found that the liner choice depends on what you want the water to do. A rubber or plastic membrane will take the water totally away and disperse it at the end of the trench. A thick permeable liner allows the water to filter into the soil while also directing it away from the house. This bed gets very dry so I wanted a little water seeping through to the plants in the bed.
@heatherhereshegrows
@heatherhereshegrows 3 жыл бұрын
I should also mention that this rain chain handles a very small portion of the roof. If it was a bigger area, I would have gone with a plastic or rubber membrane.

Nice job on the dry creek. Why didn't you run the hose and demo it? Would love to get an up date now that you had all summer with it. Did it work as planned? What would you have done differently?

If you don't want water pooling at the base of the chain, why did you use a liner that allows water to seep through? Why not a water proof liner?

but the rain chain didn't work. In the follow up video, the water isn't following the chain and is splashing all over the place. The point of having a chain is to allow the physics of the water get the rain to run along the chain and not splash the house.
