When you're building an underground bar in sandstone, you're not limited to just two dimensions! In this episode we're digging downwards from the bar floor and installing a real manhole and lid!

You mentioned the sand floor eroding faster than the cement floor, which got me thinking: how does the rest of the tunnel system deal with erosion long term? My first thought was to just not worry about it because it's all the same material, but then some paths will be traveled more than others, and foot/wagon traffic will tend to be concentrated in certain areas (i.e. nobody walks placing their feet right up against the walls).
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
We haven't noticed too much issue, partly the loose sand evens things out. There have been one or two places that needed some cement on the floor to level it out.

@@saveitforparts Howdy, I've got a solution for your digging tool severed cable problem. A lot of people add a 3 pin IEC socket (Bluetti AC input) to power tools. That way you can easily replace cut cables with standard PC power leads (Bluetti AC cable). They come in lengths up to 10ft. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNCJnJaCsNLDqZ8.html (It's cheaper to buy old PC power cables and chop the cable sockets off old CRT monitors than buy new bare parts 👍)

If that LED strip is of the sectiond "cut here to shorten" type it might be a simple fix with a soldering iron. With that many drills down due to chopped cable I would consider making the cable on the drill really short (5 - 10cm) and using an extension cord for the long part. That way you would only be down a cord and not an entire drill. That or replace the cord part on the drill with a C13 Male connector (Thats the Input connector for a PC PSU) and use PC or Monitor Power cables. They tend to be quite cheap to free depending on who you know

Maybe you could tie a small loop in the wire then have a very long and stretchy bungee cord attached, to keep the power cable up and clear of the chisel

Love it! You mention the high humidity, do you notice any visible water in the cave (running down the walls / drips from the ceiling) when it rains?
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
We don't get any water from rain, just condensation. I don't know the technical geology terms, but the sandstone is kind of a slow sponge that holds moisture but doesn't let a lot of water move through it. If we dug a hole and filled it with water it would eventually soak in, but it would probably take 6 months to disappear.

We've tried that, it doesn't work very well in the sandstone. Since it's a rock you actually have to use hammer drills and chisel bits and stuff.

Way cool manhole secret hole cover thing!. I think you need an ice auger conversion for digging down except that hard layer of course. Also couldn't you put the cords on a spring reel so they would maintain some tension and keep them out of the bits way? Even if you just had an alligator sleeve & a spring you could keep adjusting it down cuz you don't progress that fast.
@saveitforparts
@saveitforparts Жыл бұрын
I probably could do a bungee cord or reel to protect my cords, just haven't gotten around to it. Really I just need to be more careful! An ice auger isn't really effective on sandstone, we've tried something like that before. I might try the next size up of dodge imported jackhammers :-)

concrete doesn't actually dry, it sets. it's a chemical reaction where the water becomes part of the solid material
@lorenzo42p
@lorenzo42p Жыл бұрын
I've since learned a bit more about this, and forgotten it all. I think heating limestone breaks down the material and a chemical reaction releases water. when you add water back to the mix, the water reacts with the cement in a chemical reaction which releases heat, forming crystals in the rock.

Why didn't you dig the hole in the first place, and then installed the manhole? I guess you can still remove the manhole, continue digging with a little bit more digg-nity, and then installing it back.

I wanted some support above the hole first. Sandstone gets crumbly whenever it has an abrupt edge or cut, so if I started digging down I'd get a ragged top that would need more patching and support to put the manhole collar on.

This one raises more questions than usual. For instance....at no point did I see any explanation as to WHY you were doing this. To hide? Nobody is looking for you 100 feet underground in rural Wisconsin. To be cool? Gabe, my young friend, you topped out some kind of algorithmic cool scale long ago. I do need to get out to Sandland again soon. Let me know when you are heading out and wanting help. The Robots take over in January but December is not bad. BTW, I have seen evidence for how brewery cave builders excavated vent holes, a somewhat similar concept. It looks to me as if they basically used something like an ice auger. Perhaps this is another thing you might try...... Oh....and your video montage of effects should have had deep red glowing from underneath. Magma or Satan, your choice. TW
