Installing a Spectre cowl intake

To push theJeep to the next phase of its build, I need some supporting mods. Installing a Spectre cowl intake will remove the air box under the hood and free up valuable room in the engine bay for coilovers. It will help lower the engine intake air temps, and gives a little more throttle response.
I was in the market for a cowl intake. I like the idea of using the cowl to protect the intake from the elements, and pulling cooler air from outside the engine bay. A snorkel could work , but it is not my first choice with the direction I am going with FM. Trailhead offroad (THOR) offers a great kit, but I didn't like the pricetag. Spectre offered a few variances of the intake I have, but unfortunately the company has disconnected them. I believe I have a very early version of the intake. I have seen a version where the pipe was mandrel bent into the right shape instead of pie cut and tig welded. I will keep an eye out for one of those, but this one should suffice.
I could have easily built one, but the cost of materials was more than what I paid for this used.
One thing I didnt like about the THOR intake is that you do alot of work in the cowl to get it to work. The Spectre puts the filter in a easy place to get to. I think this piece is probably the most crucial if you were to make your own.
Air filter housing:

The next would be the adapter for the firewall.
You could probably get by with something like this.

If you want to help out the channel I have a merch store.

Similar to a Loch-Stewart intake. Loch-Stewart was from Queensland, Australia. A legend of his time.

I've had a Thor cowl intake for quite a while now I like it. I've seen the spectre one before but I had no idea the filter was inside the tube like that, that's kinda interesting hopefully it's not too hard to find a replacement. I really like having my filter in the cowl, I use the standard style filter from Thor with a pre-filter sock in most conditions I bought a couple of thor filters from them for spares I've spent a bunch of time researching cone style filters to see if there's anything else that fits in that space but the thor filter is the best and largest that will fit and its also a good quality but they are pricey. In dusty and sandy conditions I use a big UNI foam pod filter with filter oil exactly like what dirt bikes use, the oiled foam filter is much better for dust and sand I use a pre-filter on that too. The K&N style filters really suck in sand and dust especially without a pre-filter. For anyone interested that has a thor intake the UNI filter i use is part# UP-6325ST. It's a tight fit in the cowl I think I've gone back like 3 times with a dremel to open up the hole a bit more but I service my filter regularly. I think a lot of people worry about water and having a cowl intake but the cowl vent is fake on that side. The only time you have to worry about water is when you go through deep water and get a big wave that comes up over the car and floods the cowl but even then I've never had any issues, the cowl drains are pretty large and most pre-filters repell water.

Wow! A lot of great information. I was able to find a replacement filter very easy. Amazon carries them and had one at my house within a day or two. I really like the Thor intake, but I'm not a fan of having the filter inside the cowl. It makes changing the filter a little more difficult. The spectre allows me to change the filter with one bolt and just by opening the hood. I think a lot of people don't realize that the passenger side of the cowl is not open like the driver's side. Unless you submerge your jeep to the windshield, you are most likely ok. I avoid water at all costs and mainly stick to rocks. Thanks for the info on the filters. I'm sure someone will get use from it.

good video ! I have installed a Spectre elbow on the intake manifold connected to the Air Box. I didn't smooth out the welds inside - do not expect any issues with the air flow - your thoughts ?
@FMJeeping

Shouldn't have any issues. Minimal air flow increase if you smooth them out. You probably wouldn't even notice.

It's still too early to tell for me. I'll know on my next run out if I feel like I got any more power. I think since I'm running a header and optimized throttle body and a pretty free flowing exhaust , I should see something. I definitely have a quicker throttle response

Is the intake the smooth one or the pie cut one like mine? Spectre sells a flat version of the part that mounts to the fire wall. That might work. I think it's like $6-8 bucks on Amazon .

I have the Specter cowl kit specifically for the TJ. It's NOS in the box. I've been thinking of installing it, but I've read cold air intake is a hoax. You may gain 5 HP max. Anyone care to dispute this?
@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping Ай бұрын
Nate from dirt lifestyle actually did a pretty thorough test on the TJ cowl intake. I don't remember specifics but I remember there being lower intake air temps which could potentially add a little bit of horsepower. since the daughter I haven't dynoed my Jeep but I do have slightly better throttle response.

amzn.to/3Aqy5S7. You will need a hub to match though. It's not a straight bolt in.

@FMJeeping
@FMJeeping Жыл бұрын
@@mohameddabous3781 the hub I bought , I found on Facebook marketplace. It was a weld in hub with 5 bolts. I then matched the steering wheel to fit my hub. If you are dead set on that steering wheel. You will need to find a weld in hub that will accommodate a 5 bolt steering wheel, or get a 3 bolt hub and run an adapter. My setup was not a bolt in setup and I no longer have auto off turn signals or air bags. I am not sure if you were looking for a similar setup. But running it the way I did removes those options.
