Installing a wifi dashcam & replacing the door rubber on the XFR

Күн бұрынThe dashcam that I fitted in this video was terrible. After reviewing the footage, it would only record at 720p and contrasted terribly with bright light vs darker shadows. In addition, the dashcam kept switching off and on randomly.
For this reason, I did another video (link at the end of this one) on the replacement I fitted and the link to that dashcam is below here: (I chose option T4 for the Novatek chip, but if you want the rear camera too, opt for option T5)

Had exactly the same problem with my door seal and at precisely the same location! If you want to better hide the cable going into the arm rest then it is very easy to pull out the fitment where the auxillary and usb connections reside. Once done route the cable behind the centre console and into the arm rest area. Dead easy and a much beter look with no visible cable.

Another great informative video. I am currently waiting delivery of my dash cam for my XE so hopefully the way the interior comes apart should be very similar.

Hey David. You should take a look at the Dashcam install video I did on my X260 XF. The interior on that car will be identical to the XE. 😉

Hi i'm a big fan of your videos and they have helped me in so many ways, for example to install my mud flaps (Jacuar lol) and to replace my driver door ambient light when it stopped working so i had to remove door trim to accomplish this and your video was invaluable, i have a 2008 Premium Luxury XF which i love, even compared with the newer models i just believe the older X250 has something which has been lost in the facelift models, but i'm taking a big leap and trading up for the Big Cat XJ, i hope it's the right thing to do, i've done my research but it's gonna take alot to stand up to the tried, tested and ever gorgeous X250, wish me luck, thankyou for all of your hard work and sound tips/advice.

I did the door seal on mine, as there was a kink in the old one and had a bit of wind noise. Unfortunately it didn't cure the wind noise 🤷♂️

Sorry to hear that Mark. Wind noise will require a door adjustment. If you look at the window surround is it sealing properly? I recall on my Audi I was able to adjust the upper portion separately by adjusting 4 big bolts behind the door card. With the seal tight the wind noise was gone.

@@carfanfan something for me to try. It does seem to seal properly and its only a faint noise when above 70mph. With the old seal having a small kink, I just presumed that was the cause.

Have you considered separate dashcam battery pack to allow 24/7 recording without Car battery drainage..??

Yes I have for parking mode. But I'm concerned about the battery being defective and combusting. Our summers get up to 40 degrees here so I have much to think about.

@@carfanfan Thats were LiFePo4 batteries are recommended and not the usual li-ion type. These fully charge in 45mins and don't get hot

I'd recommend driving it first. Personally I didn't like the X260 which is why I got rid of it and went back to an X250. But many people do like them and you might find it a nice change. Test drive some with different engines to see which takes your preference. My 2L turbo had plenty punch but the turbo lag I couldn't get used to. Interior materials are inferior to the X250 and you won't get that leather smell. Mine developed mechanical issues after just 24,000kms which was alarming. Make sure you get a warranty with it.

I think you've made that much harder than it needs to be, above the interior light unit there's a nice connector with switched and constant 12v. Hook into that and you don't need to do most of that job.

Thanks for the advice Edward. This Dashcam is rather crappy. The exposure is terrible and the quality is sub standard. I have another dashcam which I'll be testing to check quality. That one requires a hardwire so I'll definitely look into the console hook-up 👍

What's the disadvantage of hard wiring it to for example the ceiling light wiring and having it turn on whenever you open the door? Extra power consumption? Does the device specify how much power it uses?

The Dashcam used 5v. In car terms it's quite a drain on the battery considering the battery is 12v. I've set the dashcam to turn off after 1 minute if the engine isn't running. So it runs for 4 minutes after opening the door. I'm going to order a battery back which interfaces the dashcam to the car and will hardwire it to the car as the battery will keep it going and save the car's battery I don't drive it much so I need to conserve the battery.

Yes they all run on 5 volts, that doesn't tell anything about the power usage. Power [W] is voltage [V] × current [A]. So for example if the camera's power adapter takes 0.3 A @ 12 V, it uses 3.6 watts. That is not much, a bit less than one incandescent footwell bulb, for example. I had a dash cam (or it's power adapter to be exact) wired to the ceiling lights cluster on a Mondeo, and everything worked perfectly. That was rated at about 3.6 W, and besides I had changed all the interior and mirror bulbs to LED, so the power consumption was already down by at least 15 W whenever I unlocked the car & opened a door and power was switched on to those circuits.

If you would have it wired to for example the interior lights, those circuits are still automatically shut off about five (?) minutes of turning the car off and closing the door, so the camera will turn off too. Adding a battery pack - is the aim to keep the recording goin for extended time during parking, sort of like a sentry mode?

Why do not buy a good camera like thinkware , blackvue, viofo ? An expensive car with a cheap camera?!:)

Those expensive cameras use the same chip as the cheap one's on AliExpress. The chips are all manufactured in China. There are two types of good chips, Ambarella and the 96672 - anything else is rubbish. The seller of the first dashcam advertised it as having the 96672 but when I opened it, it was some obscure manufacturer called SIEL which I've never heard of. Basically, I was duped. The one fitted in my car now has the Ambarella chip and is awesome.
