Installing a Wood Floor and a Log Truss for the Porch Roof, Off Grid Log Cabin Build Alone, Ep 24

My Self Reliance

Жыл бұрын

This is such a rewarding stage of the log cabin build and homestead development! Now that the cabin is dried in, I'm working on interior elements, such as moving in an antique icebox, installing a pine wood floor, insulating the interior walls and ceiling and more. This week, in addition to the interior work, I scribe and fit the four lower posts on the porch that hold up the roof overhang and then install the three shorter posts that support the two purlins and the ridge log. The only things left to do on the exterior of the log portion of the cabin is to board the ceiling overhangs on all for sides (soffit), trim the windows and doors and seal the log joints before winter.
Between working on the cabin, I'm busy bringing in the harvest, especially the potatoes, as the temperatures drop to a low of 2C this week. I am storing vegetables in the root cellar, the basement of the cabin, and before December, I have to finish insulating and boarding the walls and ceiling to protect the food from freezing.
Not shown in this video, but will be in next week's video, is the cladding of the exterior of the breezeway with horizontal pine boards and sealant. Once that is finished, I am installing doors on the porch side and the breezeway entrance to the outdoor kitchen and I'll be completely weather tight before the end of September, well before our winter really gets started in early November.
For more information on what I am doing this week on the homestead, tune in to my other channels where I explain what I'm doing. • Building an Off Grid L...

It gives myself, and I’m sure most of your long time followers, great relief to see you sitting on YOUR PORCH eating your dinner and bringing items in to the cabin, knowing your going to have an amazing space to enjoy this winter. I’m always anxious to see what progress you make each and every week Sean. You’ve actually taught me quite a few things over the years I’ve been watching you. Love your motivation and work ethic, your an inspiration to many on how to be self reliant. I thank you once again for taking the time to keep filming content and sharing the progress on your homestead on KZfaq, and hope you can continue for to share your life’s story for many more years my friend!

I’ve watched his channel for a while, not since he started but he wasn’t finished with his first cabin and I finished that and then he got annoying jerk neighbors and another problem so decided to sell that and buy new property and move, and then just build another even more diesel log cabin pretty awesome. It’s so impressive how this man changed his life. I bet he’s very happy. For real this guy is a tough man, I bet he could chew up nails and spit out bullets. It’s just ridiculous.

That's BS. He's been doing this for almost 2 yrs. Basic tools right, except for the compass and then he uses a butane lighter for his fires. Should be twirling sticks or at least using a match. You know this guy has made over a $1 million from this.

I watched you build your last cabin, your outhouse, your pizza oven your wood storage your first rough wooden chair your workouts, your small lean too where you cook your meals looking out at the spring that winds through your land. I watched you build your own house your sauna. Billboards put on the thickest, sturdiest roof I've ever seen. But I was truly truly moved today when it began to shower outside of your latest cabin, and to think you built that huge structure by hand and it's shielding you from the rain. All closed in, I was moved!

It seemed like a significant moment Shawn when the block and tackle were taken down after the last vertical beam was in to support the porch roof. Even the careful positioning of the canned goods to the ice box seemed like a moving-in gesture. I know so much has still to be done - but so much has been done and for we who watch, we enjoyed the moments in this vid that were so significant. Well done on a fantastic amount of work. The potato harvest was good but so too was the evidence of soil on that piece of land. So good to share this journey with you in the comfort of our own homes.

It'd be cool to see an episode of what you do when the sun goes down. Whats it like inside the cabin, etc.

Was in construction for few years when I was younger, did a few full remodels with my wife recently but man, wish I had the opportunity to help you from the beginning on this one…to lend a free hand, but to gain the knowledge in building this way. This is THEE dream.

It is so amazing how 'quickly' in KZfaq time your house has turned from a log structure to a home. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

I have not spent considerable time in the wild since 1986. But, watching you enjoy your life so fully has helped me remember why I loved spending time with my late father in the wild. It was a time I will never forget. And to boot, you look (as well as your mannerisms & speaking cadence) so much like him. I love every moment with you and Cali. You are a great therapy to my soul. Thank you.

So amazed at how you single handedly build these incredible structures. I can only imagine the strength mentally and physically it takes to do that. Very admirable!

Hello Shawn, More good progress... I guess as winter approached the goal is to get as much of the outside work done so you can focus in the inside when the snow is here... Have a good weekend. Take care. Paul,,

I love seeing Callie’s tail held as banner flashing through the grasses; you enjoying a home cook meal on the porch of your cabin, and the beautiful colors of fall heralding a new change. It’s hard to believe the winter toil you had with the cabin; the snow, the ice buildup on the exposed base of the cabin! Wow! You have come a long way in a short amount of time. I love you videos.

Oh WOW........ At roughly 10 minutes into the video, that sunrise was absolutely amazingly out of this world. So incredibly beautiful. Your skills in woodwork and your craft is 1 thing, but your cinematography is something else. STUNNING.

Z wielką przyjemnością oglądam Twoje postępy! Jesteś niesamowity ! Widać już jesień za progiem domu a przed Toba jeszcze mnóstwo pracy by bezpiecznie spędzić zimę! Powodzenia. Pozdrawiam.😀😀

SHAWN & OUR CALI you are making this into a GRAND Cabin !!! Love the items that you place around into the cabin and the sunsets are AWESOME !!! I keep on watching remembering how it was to feel the wood under my hands and fingertips !!! The chairs on the Porch are like the ones I made in Colorado for the table in the dining room and for the porch for my self to sit and sleep in !!!
