Part 2 of our ultimate water solution involves installing a nice 500 gallon underground tank for our collected spring water. This was a job but well worth the effort and something we were saving for a long time to do.

Nice work man. I always wanted to get one of those for a underground storage cache

Can you explain in more detail how you seal the pipe into the tank? Dirt directly in contact around the seals or backfill the area with gravel?

For those of you watching, yes the hole is a bit undersized (widthwise)... What I failed to mention during the video was that I had a slight hydraulic leak and it began to rain. Normally I would have gone a bit wider but the reality was it made for a kind of funny video and there's no issue with this tank being as heavy duty as they are. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You are so lucky you live somewhere that you could pick up the tank. Just for a 250 gallon cistern the company wants half the cost to get it to me! Ugh. Also, not understanding the secretive manor with the locals when it comes to helping me with my spring! I just want good water to use *inside* my house. My spring is literally only 60' away! 😫😫😫

That's a bummer to hear for sure. And yeah that local shop of ours has everything in the back lot. It's pretty awesome. As far as your spring goes have you tried maybe finding a local farmer that could take on a side job helping you out? They're usually pretty good with projects like this.

@@downstateradv I have had a local man that does springs, septics, excavating on the side come and look at it. My spring is actually coming out in two places within 10' of each other. The water tested acidic and the environmental company that tested my water asked if roots were in the water...yes, tons of them from grass. They told me to get closer to the source away from the carbon dioxide exchanging roots🤦🏽‍♀️ The gent is wary of using mini excavator on the hill afraid the spring might get shy and change direction! Whaaaaat? Lol. Anyway, I'm ready to drop some bang for his help. My well water is disgusting!!!

Yeah I would say put all of your effort into it. Springs tend to be far better than wells in terms of water quality. Find a better excavator that doesn't mind getting his hands a bit more dirty. Honestly a lot of these especially on the hillsides can be done by hand and really kind of should be done by hand to be honest. You definitely don't want to dig too deep or reroute the spring or smear the mud etc. Big machinery can actually do more harm than good if the spring is fairly accessible.

@@downstateradv it's very accessible but I'm in the mountains of NC and there is so.much.rock!!! I wish I could show you video of it. It's amazing. You are probably right though. I should keep pecking away at it by hand!

Have the same situation. I'm wondering about the size of tank for like 2 people being conservative and storing grey water from the cabin. I'm just learning, and you make it look so easy. I was considering getting one of those machines., but i haven't done the research yet. Was it worth the investment for you? Thanks for posting. Very helpful.

Awesome Jon, can i ask how you prevent your water line from freezing above ground?
@downstateradv
@downstateradv 3 жыл бұрын
We shall see! First year with it like this. In the past we always winterized the line that crosses the creek and just let the spring flow down the hill. I'm going to get it running towards the middle of winter for a day and see how it does. I've been told as long as it's starting at 57 degrees and constantly moving it should be ok. If it ends up freezing, I may add a small solar system and a regulated heat tape and wrap the line. That's a lot of investment but likely well worth it for that good water!

@@downstateradv How did it go with the freezing? What type of hose do you use that runs from the spring to the tank and from tank to house? Does the hose flex and not break when frozen?

I’m confused, you switched tanks because you couldn’t use the old one in the winter due to freezing. This is also going to freeze?

What kind of pump are you using to get your water uphill that far?
@downstateradv
@downstateradv 3 жыл бұрын
A standard 4-in well pump. 120 volt. I believe it's only about one horsepower or maybe slightly more. Does the job just fine though and I can run it off of a small 2500 watt generator. If you're confused on what size you might need just Google pump head calculations and do a little bit of reading about it. Then when you're ready to buy just look at the pump it should have a head chart. Basically head is distance and height combined that the pump can actually pump and what kind of flow you'll get at that distance and height. That should get you on your way.

Head is how much the difference is in elevation translated to pressure, it has nothing to do with distance or friction loss.

Incorrect. Google "total dynamic head"
