Just want to say “Thanks for the ideas, links and motivation.” I went online, looked a great deal for lights and other accessories for my truck and trailer. I got the same style lights...did a 30 pack and also a new wiring harness/junction box for my trailer. I already got my trailer at the garage entrance, waiting for new lights, brackets and wiring. Gonna do it all to get it ready for winter.

Depending on the climate where you usually drive, it might be a good idea to put some primer, or even just some Fluid Film on the edges of the holes, where the blank metal is exposed from drilling. The chicken lights prolly have some sort of gaskets, but for extra corrosion protection.

I drove a truck for 50 year. And something most likely not tell you and putting lights on a truck to stop them from going out this very important always break the ground wire never the positive. And when wiring always soder then soder each wire separately. When done hold heat iron on the connections. Then pull on the wire to show it is connected and then slide heat shrinks over it and the heat up the shrink so it tightens up. I also like covering each connection with silicone to ensure no water get in to corrode the wire connect

I’ve always liked more lights on a vehicle. I want my truck to be seen coming and going! Good job. And you don’t want your trailer to be brighter than your rig, right? Thanks for the link as well. I may get some of those for my cabover for when I’m at the point of adding more lights for its maiden voyage.

I always heard chicken lights came from early chicken haulers. It started in the Deep South like Mississippi when these chicken farmers needed their chickens hauled, but it didn't pay anything. So the farmers covered their tractor trailers with lights so they could get drivers to haul them.
@Ezrider3595 жыл бұрын
iv heard a number of different storys over the years. iv heard it started with a company up in the north east that advertised the fastest delivery of there fresh chickens and they put amber lights on there bumpers to make there trucks stand out. iv also heard that the orange glow of the lights resembles the heat lights in a chicken coop. iv also heard that even way back before then there was problems with chickens being stolen off trucks when driving threw towns late at night so the drivers would hang lanterns on the side so they could see what was going on
@MichaelWilliams03114 жыл бұрын
I've heard it comes from the shapes of the early marker lights old timey trucks had.

As a trucker myself I always thought chicken lights where called that because at night when them trucks get near you all those lights tend to make you give extra room to them aka be a chicken lol

The best chicken lights I had on my Rigs, were made by 3M. I had too many to count 2"x 4" Amber Reflective pieces made. Ran them evenly space top and bottom edges of my Trailer. Anytime light would hit the trailer it was lit up. No bulbs to worry about burning out.

i fished some new wires up threw the back wall of the sleeper to the "work lights" on the back of the cab switched the two white lights out for red. and then used the work light switch for the new lights on the side of the cab. the red lights on the back of the cab still put out plenty of light to be able to see too hook up a trailer in the dark.

I want to get around 60 lights on my trailer. What wire and fuse size should i use?
@MattHD155 жыл бұрын
looks dandy, the wiring and mounting switch will take longer than the light install, nice old school, newer freightliner multiplexed system you cant even add lights or tap wires or you asking for a nightmare problems with system.
@Ezrider3595 жыл бұрын
yeah it shouldn't be too bad to wire, im probably going to run the wires up threw the sleeper then then in the back wall to two "work" lights on the back of the cab that are already on there own switch and then change those two white lights out for red ones. at least that is my plan at the moment, not going to wire them for real until i Finnish repainting the truck.
@Ezrider3595 жыл бұрын
the new volvo trucks are really bad for giving you fits if you change anything with the lights, you cant even change standard bulbs out for leds without causing issues.
